What is the earliest video game to have a New Game Plus?

Pic related is the earliest I can think of; beating the game lets you continue your save file from any stage with your current number of chaos emeralds.

That's second loop, those were around since the 70s.

OP's example isn't right either. It's not a NG+ unless the game has an inventory or a stat progression. Carrying over points or upgrades is not NG+, but looping, as mentioned above.

You thought correctly. Several people ITT are talking about looping and are calling it "NG+" erroneously. The concepts are only superficially connected.

Looping is when the game restarts and you just continue with your score and upgrades. It only happens in action games and shooters.

NG+ is when you can start a new game with your exp/level/stats and inventory. It's only possible in adventure and "RPG" games by definition.

People in this thread need to get a few things straight:

- If the map is different, it's not a newgame+
- If the game gets harder while you stay the same, it's not a newgame+

Zelda 2 and Chrono Trigger are examples of a newgame+.

In Diablo you can replay the game on higher difficulties (normal, nightmare, hell) but I can't remember if you can replay difficulties you've already cleared.

Later Gradius games allow additional "loop"s with increased difficulty each time.

Gradius V allows for up to 255 of them. THAT is crazy.

The difficulty caps after a few loops. While I don't think anyone has done a one credit run through 255 loops (tviks went up to loop 16 on a credit), there are videos.
