It's the game that singlehandedly inspired the elder scrolls series, so that should give you an idea of the gameplay.
It's just a fun game because there's essentially no handholding and you're completely on your own, yet the game never feels unfair in any way. There's also a lot of freedom for character development, and most of the spells are pretty interresting (with stuff like stopping time and a fly spell)

Also to add to what this guy said, 99% of the game's combat is utterly boring since it can be resolved by just going forward + swing then immediately go backward.
There are a lot of skills, but more than half are useless. Literally, completely useless. Also swords outclass every other weapon class by a large margin. Beyond the first two floors, the game is pathetically easy.
Magic is useless, because it's so incredibly clunky to cast anything that you'll rather kill everything with a sword anyway. You'd think a magic missile is easy to use but no, you first cast it, then your cursor turns into a crosshair, and then you go through about 5 prompts of "there's not enough space to cast the spell" before you find a big enough area to use it.

The mouse input is fine once you dump the icons and go for context interaction.
The main problem with the keyboard controls is having Jump placed on J so the only way to use it without remapping is to make a standing jump with shift+J. Flying up and down is a bit cumbersome but that's more of a design issue.

>The mouse input is fine once you dump the icons and go for context interaction.
Not really no. The mouse input is just junk. It's not an issue of how you use, it's an issue of it being bad.

If I polled the mouse at 3Hz in an FPS game for example, you could compensate by moving more for the keyboard more, but that doesn't make the polling rate unshit. It just means you're compensating for it more. Same thing here.

> so the only way to use it without remapping is to make a standing jump with shift+J.

Not really. I'm not suggesting it's not a shitty key mapping, I wish you could remap everything outright (within the game not using dosbox keymaps). But yeah you can use your mouse at the top of the screen to move forward and hit J while running. You can use just the keyboard with one hand if you simply rotate your hand (or keyboard as well for less awkward twisting) or curl your fingers to pull your thumb up so your thumb sits on J and you can move with the normal controls and jump, it's a bit awkward but very doable.

The mouse input is good, particularly for its time. Arx Fatalis did it a lot worse ten years later.
If you have trouble with the mouse you're doing something wrong or have the wrong expectations for the game.

>Sounds like you're doing something wrong then.
I'm not. That's how the game rolls.

>FM Towns or PC-9821
No, because I have no real intention of emulating those.

>Maybe your computer is too weak and you need to lower the details.
Nope. Constant 70fps zero drops. Like I said, it's the way the game handles mouse input. Some games in DOS have shitty mouse input, afaik not a lot. But some. Most of the ones I have are decent. Big wonder why that is.

How bout games that don't have that problem: Quake, Doom, Wolf, Blake, Darkforces, Darklands, WC1/2, every Sierra game and every lucasarts game I've tried. Simcity/2000, C&C, Crusader, Descent, Dreamweb, Dark Savant, Darksun, Wizardy, Fade to Black, Incredible Machine, Magic Carpet, Oxyd, Spectre VR, Star Trek, Quarantine, Mechwarrior 2, Terminal Velocity, Ultima 8, Ween, Willy Beamish, XCom 1/2, Syndicate/wars, Albion.

Other games that have mouse issues, Shadow Warrior, Blood, Duke... Bmouse for build helps a bit for those, but there's still the limited degree quantization that makes smallest turn you can make about 2 pixels which is annoying for long shots.
Wing Commander 1 has fairly dick outside of action - IE bar/stats/ship.
System Shock - Moves smooth this time around - but they couldn't figure out how to fucking keep the X/Y ratio the fucking same like every other game in existence.

See a pattern here? Kind of funny how Origin games or Build engine games have issues. Games made with the same engine or by the same company tend to have the same problems when they don't seem to know or care what they're doing.. So, no it's not me doing something wrong, I didn't develop the fucking game.

>>1873412
Oh yeah, if you're moving with the mouse say place it at the top to run straight forward, and you right click at the same time, it'll jump with the same velocity as you're moving.

>> No.1877816

>>1877813
Actually I made a mistake, I listed Crusader as not having a problem. I forgot it has same issue as System Shock, it's somewhat less of an issue during play since 90% of the time you're moving left and right to turn anyway. It's smoother. But still an issue. Because well Origin games it seems.

>> No.1877819

>You're the one with a problem with mice in Origin games.
yeah, you can go look around, these are common complaints. It has nothing to do with the emulator and everything to do with these games with different mouse input artifacts and everything with the games. You're defending it doesn't mean jack shit.

>Maybe it's your emulator but that's part of your issue and not Origins.
That's nice. But many other games don't have the problem so, no.
