Plasma gun owns if you know how to use it but still everything is a piece of shit compared to the rail gun. Seriously. Quake 3 was made to pretty much be that in entirely and you're the one posting the fucking game. Which somehow you've managed to get an extra shitty looking example of it. Even stock levels with vertex lighting and bilinear filtering looked better back in 1999. You just had to go and find a version that looked like ass in particular.
Then there's the fact that you're strawmaning like a dipshit because I'm not here only for 32-bit HD graphics, but that doesn't mean they don't exist or you have to shit all over images with it. I don't think you understand how Quake works. You do know this shit isn't fucking Street Fighter right?
You don't fucking 'main' a weapon, you use what's efficient for the area, the player and the time. That reduces the times you'd use the plasma gun but it doesn't make it any less deadly. It's often used primarily for area denial spam, since it's the most effective for it and most situations end up dump and jump anyway, it doesn't make sense to use it as often because those situations are not optimized for it. Especially when you compare stats like RL that will get inflation based on rocket jumps, and thus constantly out and generally the first reaction weapon due to switch speed.
Plasma rips people apart, but there's a time and a place and it's not chasing after people across a map and dumping ammo that takes 1-2 seconds to get to them.

My fave is the secret level E2M7: The Underearth. It's so fucking action pakced and I just love it. Plus the music is killer. I believe the song is called The Hammer.

Second favourite is Wind Tunnels which is also awesome with all the falling and jumping.

Third favourite might be E1M6. Nice little boxy level that never gets old. Or maybe the low gravity level.

But yeah, favourite of all is most certainly E2M7.

I have retail Quake 2 (CD) installed on Win7 and it works fine for me.

Q2 does randomly disable my mouse driver from time to time, so I have to restore it frequently. But I never have lag issues, just the mouse getting disabled when I quit the game.

Try disabling visual themes for the lag issue (works for fixing mouse issues in GTAVC), otherwise look into OpenGL vs. other display settings.

It's a shame Kali died. Had the best game server browser to date.
That thing was liked greased lightning and you add/edit filters on the fly for pretty much everything. Other browser developers are incompetent in comparison. It's hilarious that a company like Valve could be rolling millions, have a downloadable software system for their own games and a built in server browser and still be so fucking terrible. It's like they don't even pay people to fucking work on anything but the bare minimum and horribly at that.

Well that's just silly.

I think Quake's best feature is its level design and the combat situations it creates with its varied enemies. It's second to none. Though the gunplay isn't the most satisfying in terms of 'the thrill of the kill', the functionality of the weapons is really great which makes for some really fun situational aspects. Also Quake has a really sweet smoothness of its combat, like Doom, as is typical of id shooters.

What I especially love about the game's level design is how it makes full use of three dimensions; something which I haven't seen matched in any way by any other series. The verticality is beautiful and the varied array of battle environments are excellent. You're like this small mesh of pixels being hurled across all three dimensions, left to right, up to down, filled with hazardous environments. When I go to other shooters, they feel very 'flat' in comparison. In Quake I also find I have to be mindful of my step a lot more, carefully avoiding falling from ledges/platforms surrounded by lava etc during battle. It makes the combat much more interesting.

I want a Quake 2 mission pack mod in which you play as a Strogg.

It will start off with you getting hastily assembled while the humans are bombing the factory, and right at the end you are about to drown in the vat because of a power failure and a couple of Stroggs come to your rescue to get you out of there.

You have to explore the Strogg wasteland to find an ancient temple hidden in a mountain side in which a giant brain controlling machine is being operated by human cybernetic priests who are several thousand years old. You rip out the neurocyte to escape its powers. After defeating them the Strogg finds a new purpose in their existence and decides to stop attacking other planets and work on improving themselves and repair the planet. Slowly your race dies out since you discover that there is no use for your parasitic ways, and you are at peace with this thought.

I finally finished the Quake 2 mission packs. I have planned to do this since they came out but I never got the opportunity to do so (my weekly allowance was not enough and I had to buy them on sale on Steam).

Ground Zeroes is the best of the two IMHO, but none of them are any bad except that the overpowered Gladiator in The Reckoning get really annoying (and they're too short for mission packs... I wanted more more more. ;_;). It's not like they can hurt me since I always keep them inside their melee-distance, but it takes me too long to defeat them. Even using the powerups and the strongest weapons doesn't kill them in one shot.

There's also a distinct architectural difference between the two packs, as Ground Zeroes is mostly tighter indoor spaces while The Reckoning is wide open almost all over the place. That was a nice thing to do to separate them even more.

I found this at a flea market today for 50cents and I'd like to know if you guys have informations about this release because it looks really weird to me.

It's the shareware version 1.01 of the game. Comes with 2 discs and a booklet. What I don't understand is why 2 discs just for the shareware version? Apparently you can install it from both CDs, however the OST only plays on the 2nd disk, and the 2nd disk also has tons of other files which seem to be FAQs for Doom, DOOM II, Hexen, etc even has a folder about Q2, but apart from a couple of readme files I can't seem to open them.

i've got this in a flea market in the middle of France but I doubt it was released here because the text on the back of the case is all in english.

So I just rolled my own Quake "Steam patch".

Since steam uses a launcher for Quake 1, I was able to replace winquake.exe with darkplaces.exe and have Steam still show me as being in a valid steam game.

Then I grabbed these awesome .pak files made by Roy Batty over at QuakeOne.com. They have the advantage of being properly ripped with error correction and lossless. And being packed into a single-file .pak file I just dropped in palce and Darkplaces saw immediately.

As of now, my Steam copies of Quake and the first two mission packs are properly fixed. Gonna go shotgun me some Grunt flesh now.

So after a long time the other day I decided to download quakelive on steam, and the first thing I notice is that for some reason, it's not as smooth as I remember it being.

So I turn down the graphics, and it still feels like ass. Anyways, I get to kill a few people and I hear a different commentator as well. What is this? Why did they make this change? What the fuck?

Hey guiz, I downloaded kmQuake2 and set it up and it runs well, for everything except one thing. I can't get the music to work unfortunately. Any suggestions? I set it up just as it said in the instructions.

The worst thing is even if I put in my actual Quake 2 disc the game still doesn't play the music off the CD. What the fuck?

*Oh shit, btw I said the sourceport wrong. I don't mean KMQuake 2, I mean yamagi Quake 2. Yamagi Quake 2 isn't playing either the ogg files in the music directory it told me to make, nor is it playing the CD music off the CD.
