I just had an idea. Do you want actual carts in boxes or do you just want to play stuff on your Genesis? If you get a flash cart you'll save money in the long run but I save more money by emulating the stuff I don't have so yeah it's your call

I just recently got a genesis and I'm really enjoying its library. There are so many great games on that console that the world just passed by and forgot about after. It's not like SNES where many of the top games were already part of or started long-running franchises that continue to this day.

Any good metroidvania-style games on genesis? Or anything that focuses on exploration. Most of the stuff I play on it is shmups, run-and-guns, and platformers.

I can't really think of anything that would technically fit the mold of a metroidvania, but the wonder boy series are platformer/adventure games with rpg elements.

Monster World 3 is heavier on rpg elements, and 4 is a bit tighter in the platforming elements and has nicer visuals (jp only though its not hard to find repros for genesis)

Closest thing that comes to mind is Mega Turrican. In terms of exploration there's Beyond Oasis, Crusader of Centy, and Landstalker.

You have to keep in mind this is pretty much what Genesis was known for, fast action games.

I actually have mega turrican and it's fucking awesome.
And I know that's what the genesis does best, but I was just seeing if there were any other game styles to branch out into.
I'll look into beyond oasis. Am I correct in thinking it's kinda like zelda? I probably won't look into landstalker though, because I've always hated isometric games. And centy is way too expensive.

Both Beyond and Centy are similar to Zelda so I'm not sure if they're what you're looking for.

Creators are sometimes wrong about their work. See: Miyamoto's comments on Zelda 2 (meanwhile as he helps drive the Zelda franchise into the ground).

Tatsuya Umehara wasn't a director for any games, he was just a composer. Besides, ZW was just a training project that got pushed out the door to make a quick buck. That sure as hell doesn't sound like it had a lot of heart put into it to me.
