Or use this link. I uploaded/updated the build with a rehauled combat system, taking a bit of suggestions from everyone. It's still kind of rusty, so I have no doubt people like Eric/Ijon are gonna get to Slayer like instantly, but let's see if shakes things up a bit.

1: The degredation curve is much sharper, degrading slower at lower levels and faster at higher levels.
2: After entering combat, degredation is slowed down for a little under two seconds.
3: Mook enemies (troopers, shotgunners, chaingunners, imps) now take at least hwando hits to down below Destruction rank, but attack much slower.
4: Getting hit always takes off combo from you--armor reduces this to half a rank, but getting hit while unarmored removes a rank entirely.

This is super-experimental, so please let me know how it feels in comparison with the previous system.

It was a pretty neat sequence.

Sometimes Imps take three hits to down but I kind of like that. Feels like you're doing a cool combo before they even get the time to split.

The majority of requests people were giving next were for maps and enemies--that it wasn't really Metroid unless you were on Brinstar fighting off Space Pirates.

Unfortunately I am a terrible mapper and an even worse artist, so I gathered up a crew of a dozen Metroid mappers and spriters who volunteered/wanted to do things and set out a design plan for them (and introduced the mappers/walked them through GZDoom Builder). In essence, I outsourced development.
While they're at work, I figure I'll fiddle with DemonSteele until they get back to me.

The thing about Metroid's beam selection is that they are all meant to be pretty powerful.
You can't really balance out the beams any further than what it's like right now unless you make them have limited ammo or need to recharge.

That's, uh, weird and makes no sense. I certainly didn't make them immune to imp attacks.
I have no clue what's causing that, but I pushed and uploaded a fix to Github. If you find any other enemies that aren't provoking infighting other than imps, please let me know.

Hey vr, I have some multiplayer/co-op related questions.

I prefer Zdoom to Zandronum, but zdoom tends to get out of sync, whereas Zan will recover from desyncs.
Is there something that is more like Zan in regards to multiplayer but doesn't use real 3D (GL)?

What are some good maps/modes/mods for coop?

Is there a way to make coop more challenging? Being able to die and respawn immediately and repeatedly without losing progress seems too easy and ruins the fun, challenge, and adventure.
Pistol start doesn't help; it just causes huge abuse of the issue and makes things annoying. Same with them spawning all the way at the start, especially in a big map.

No respawn (map restart on death) is too hardcore unless saves are possible.

Something like Halo would do, but that would require checkpoints, so unless those are made, it would need to be you loading a save. But is that even possible with multi? This also brings up the issue of spawn location.

so basically it seems as though I may have to mod myself a solution.
Which sucks because I'd want to mod using zdoom features but zdoom blows at multiplayer.

Cacodemons can not either.
Hellknights and Barons are also unable to do anything with infights outside of Cyberdemons for some reason.

From what I gather, it's a Zandronum bug. If a bouncing object spawns out of sight of a player (or unable to see a player, in your case thanks to partial invisibility), it'll keep bouncing until it sees a player.
I don't entirely know how to fix it, but it's funny as hell so I'll keep it in for a little while longer.


That's weird. It should activate automatically.
I'll have to experiment with that and see if I can replicate it.

There is an inventory system planned, but I'm not sure when or if I'll get to it--ijon and I kind of brainstormed up a Black Tarot-esque system from picking up weirder/more out-of-place pickups (partial invisibility, automap, berserk, etc), that'd allow people to tweak the gameplay in different ways. Things like higher combo ranks giving guns extra power instead of swords, or infinite mid-air dodging, or increasing your maximum health, or etc.
...that's all just plans, though. It might not even happen.

I'd much rather get the core gameplay working well first.

Try the classic AV, Memento Mori 1/2, Plutonia 2/Revisited, Jenesis (don't know if multi compat but it's a nice mapset), Scythe 1 and 2, Hell Revealed 1 and 2, etc

Use Survival mode and set how many lives you want each player to have. I assume you're familiar with how to set up dmflags to customize whether things like health and ammo respawn and disable jumping/crouching/etc

Don't get BFG edition for PC. Doom 3 from 2004 can be modded and has a sufficient options menu. Doom 3 BFG edition cannot be modded and doesn't have much in the way of graphics settings.

They also fucked up the flashlight mechanic, in my opinion. This one is kind of funny, because everyone bitched about not being able to use the flashlight and a gun simultaneously in '04, and when they changed it for the BFG edition, everyone bitched that it ruined the tension.

The truth is that the game should never have been dark enough to require a flashlight, but could still use darkness in certain areas to set the mood or make it harder to see without being impossible, much like several areas in Doom 1 and 2 did.

By having such dark areas in so much of the game, you have to use the flashlight a lot, which gets annoying. But when you get the ability to just leave it on with a gun out, it takes away the atmosphere and difficulty of seeing. If we didn't have a flashlight and the game wasn't as dark, it would have been better at making sure both of those extremes didn't happen.

There're some neat things on the map like deep acid pools, 3D floors and nice use of a pillar with lights, but it suffers from some horribly aligned textures like picrelated and hideous texture cut-offs. Also sometimes combat isn't planned well, like that fatso in the room with blue key.

RGBA is literally just RGB with alpha. It's for stuff like 3d renders with transparent backgrounds and whatnot to composite in videos. Pretty much useless for game recording.

YV12 is the fastest and smallest you're gonna get (though prepare for lossiness on red font text and other details), RGB is lossless. YUY2 is in the middle. RGBA is a waste of space.

And yeah, like >>1869663 said, use multithreading if possible. If you have a quadcore, try using two to give your game's performance some room. Your results may vary depending on your CPU.

Also, recording 30 or 60 frames per second is the norm. 30fps is the highest youtube goes, for example. If your rig can't handle recording in 60fps, nothing wrong with going to 30.

I'm assuming you're using DB2 so start with a square room, select 1 side and select curve linedefs tool, use parameters in pic related. You can up the vertice count if you want just know that It'll take more processing power.
To easily align textures, go into visual mode and select a linedef and press "A" that aligns all textures linked to it so as it's the same texture. Note that just pressing "A" only aligns at the x-coordinate, to align at the y-coordinate do "Shift+A" (doesn't align perfectly with a linedef that has lower or upper unpegged parameters checked)

Right, but the textures won't completely align unless the sum of all side lengths is an even multiple of the texture width. I can get really close if I calculate the circumradius, draw a line twice that long, make that into a semicircle, and then copy and flip it. There were supposed to be 3 hidden Switches in some walls, which would have lead to a secret level. Nintendo didn't want any incredibly hard to find secrets in the game, as that would cut down on Cartridge Space for something most players wouldn't even see. (Ironically enough the old NES games were full of that crap.) Theres an unfinished version of this secret in a fan made port fpr the PC. You can find the Switches, but they don't do jack shit. tl;dr: this is an adventure game
left click lets you use SWORD on ENEMY
right click lets you use BULLET on ENEMY
using DAMAGE on ENEMY builds meter, which gives SWORD more DAMAGE
killing ENEMY with SWORD gets you bottom-left meter, which lets you do special moves by double tapping a DIRECTION and using SWORD
hold RUN and DIRECTION to use WOOSH

So I'm having an issue using GMOTA's music randomizer, some .spcs I'm using are quieter than others, resulting in a really fucking annoying volume inconsistency.

Anyone have any ideas how to address this? I could always just make the quieter tunes into oggs that way I can make them louder but that might cause looping issues and ultimately a bigger mod filesize.
