ITT, games you wanted to like, but just can't get behind.

I love the visual style, and the huge sprawling towns and everything, it's a game I really feel like I could get lost in... if only it were actually fun to play.

>> No.1865879

Anything heavily character driven with more focus on story than gameplay. Best example would be PS:T.

The first Silent Hill. The first 5 or so minutes are great, but from the cafe and onward I just can't get myself to feel the slightest bit scared anymore.

Silent Hill is easily the worst horror game I've ever played. It's like the Final Fantasy of horror franchises; only popular because it's so aggressively marketed.

Baldur's Gate. I wanted to enjoy ad&d rules again, but the best part about games like that, to me, is building your characters into wrecking balls of doom. Untill you get your just right Fighter/thief to backstab someone with a short sword and realize the mage could have solo'd this encounter with summon monsters, web, and cloudkill. Being an assassin, stabing the shit out of the badguys is meh, and the cleric could out dps you with a few buffs and two spells etc.

Maybe i'll give Icewind Dale 2 a shot again because it's not 2e, but then you've got 3e nonsense and that's it's own pile of awful.

Well if you want AD&D, there's always the Gold Box series, including the vast library of scenarios for Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures. And maybe Neverwinter Nights, if someone ever reverse-engineers the server code...

Also, there's Eye of the Beholder series, and Dungeon Hack.

EZ steps to follow for having fun with Daggerfall
>change the controls, mouse settings [make the controls more like morrowind]
>make sure to have a decent amount of speed [it affects your attack speeed]
>set dosbox cpu cycles around 68000 or 50000
>buy a cart as fast as you can
>when not in a quest try to train swimming and climbing up to 9 so you won't have problems with other dungeons
>join a guild
>take guild quests
>take a loan and buy a boat as fast as you can [you can pay off the loan in time so long as you stick to one province]
>it takes 1 month to rank up in a guild, so it might be fun joining other guilds and taking quests to pass time
>if bored, get quests from nobles, or take a break and buy clothes or train skills [with many clothes you can select "USE" on them to change their appearance]

They're not necessarily boring. Not objectively anyway. But you have to be a lore-whore for them to be your thing. I love a game with a big codex, or lots of books to read, so they're for me. But I can totally understand other people not caring for them as much.

I wouldn't say they're a niche game, but they are if you want them to have any sort of replay value or lasting appeal for exploration and stuff.

Yeah, good luck with that. I played all the Infinity Engine games, and IWD2 is probably the worst of the mainline ones.

>Slowest start in any game I have ever seen, ever. You literally spend 6-8 hours running errands and fighting goblins, mostly because you're new to town and totally broke.
>3.5d Rules are a pain in the ass.
>Difficulty is set far higher than other BG and IWD games, so you *MUST* min-max if you have any hope of surviving.
>Obscure, annoying puzzles that will likely halt your progress without a guide.
>Plot makes no fucking sense. A new nation-state of monsters threatens the region, so you must travel to its capital and kill the leaders. However, when you show up, THEY'RE NOT EVEN THERE (and everyone else warmly greets you and is quite friendly), so you have to make a big scene so they return home. You then murder them.

I also can not get into PS:T. The morgue was interesting, but when I entered the city, I just wanted to get out to see interesting things and some story. Instead, I got sidequests galore. It seems that RPGs are not my cup of tea.

>> No.1868780

I played when it came out (I still have the box at my parents house)... And you're almost right, it wasn't exactly a fun game, most of the entertaining part was the feel that you were part of this massive, open world (with all its flaws Daggerfall is still more open world than its sequels, just for naming a thing: climbing).
Aside from that quests were almost the same, people tell you insignificant things, you could buy a lot of houses in various cities, yet the whole thing was quite pointless except for using them as storage facilities.
A game ahead of its time, and a game ahead of its techinical capability.

Same here. They cockteased a lot about portala to other places, but during the few hours I played nothing interesting regarding that materialized. The city was odd but not highly interesting, except the talking stone-city head that appeared, that was unexpected and interesting. The dealbreaker for me was the combat, it was horrendously bad and tedious to get through.

>> No.1868837

Easily Final Fantasy. Love games with cool storylines, massive worlds to explore, lots of imagination. But ff's storylines are so long and boring.. I also had a 2 copies of Vagrant story that i ended up selling on ebay. Thought the graphics were incredible for ps1, as were the animations, but my god. So much dialogue, so little gameplay. Probably shoudlve invested more than an hour into it but got so fed up..

Also Skyrim, but for completely different reasons. Want to play it, want to like it, but know it will suck my life away if i do. (kindve not what tc was asking but w/e.)

read it again, AD&D rules are the problem. The ammount of things I like about most rpgs, outside of the story, is combat and building characters. Anyone in Baldur's Gate who can't cast has the customization of Daytona USA, while anyone who can has the customization of Gran Turismo. And again, the combat is "caster? Enjoy options, not a caster? Enjoy almost always auto attacking"

4 drives the creepy factor to the max. previous games are just scary, but you can always fight your way through with some effort.

not so much in sh4, where some enemies just don't die.

the trailers alone were enough to thoroughly creep me out at the time of the game's release. esp that baby voices out of nowhere.

i still think there are better games, though.
