The concentration camp level was too short to be remarkable. Also there wasn't anything really shocking on it, it didn't impress me a bit. I bet life on Auschwitz was way harder than just having to push levers all day, but I guess they were short on budget, and coulndn't afford to extend that level.

And what I meant by cartoon-ish villains is the fact that they are unidimensional villains. They are made in a way that to ensure the player will have no remorse or hesitation at all when killing them. They have no back story at all. There's nothing try to explain why Deathshead and Frau became such monsters, all of the nazi grunts are completely voluntary to their services and none of them were forced into doing what they do (when in fact, during ww2, contratry to the Waffen SS, almost half of regular German soldiers never agreed with Hitler or the nazi party, they were just fighting for their homeland). There's not a single soldier that decides that his own life is more important than his fuhrer's ideals and decides to drop the gun and surrender. They are not humans, they don't feel, they are souless killing machines. They are no better than Call of Duty's evil Russians wanting to explode America just for the lulz. Hell, they even replaced the dogs with robots, just to make sure that the player would never feel bad for shooting them. That's really ridiculous and uninspired.
Check Max Payne 3, Tomb Raider, or Spec Ops: The Line and you will see some really good examples of what well-elaborated enemies are.

The game idea started on /v/ after I got off a game of ZDoom Wars and started a retro FPS thread, back in /v/'s less faggoty days just kidding, /v/ was always faggoty.

One anon had an idea: The ZDoom wiki holds a whole ton of information on all of the native idtech1 games, right? How hard would it be to put Corvus, Chex Warrior, Strifeguy, and Doomguy in a single mod to have them fight to death with their own mods?
I had nothing better to do that week, so I threw together a shitty build doing exactly that. /v/ fucking loved it, and servers were fucking packed from the start.

From there, /v/ helped along with development (they even came up with the idea of Roles in order to help everyone focus on a specific niche, as well as expanding past idtech1 for a more filled roster), and when /vg/ came to be then discussion moved there.
And then /vr/ happened and the rest is history.

In Max Payne 3 the enemies feels "human" enough. The drug dealers for example, they are cold-blooded mercyless murderers just like the nazis in WNO, but the game explains why they are like this. They were not born monsters, they were made into monsters, the society and the corrupt government made these monsters, and every time you put a bullet in the head of one of them, you know that you are not just killing a monster, you are killing someone that once was a child with dreams, a potential laborer, that could be corrected and re-introduced into a normal and productive life. On the police department level, there is one part that one of the corrupt cops decides to drop his gun and surrender. He notices that his life was much more worth than defending his corrupt boss, and he wants to live. Unlike in TNO's ridiculous chainsaw scene, it's completely up to the player to decide if he should kill him or not, and the decision is completely personal and moral, and causes absolutely no impact on the game. You start to think If you let him live, well, he is a corrupt cop, maybe he can hurt more people, but he is a middle-aged man, he probably has a family, what will happen to them? It's completely up to you to decide.
Tomb Raider doesn't go this deep, it doesn't touches the "choices" camp, but it at least provides you with a very good backstory that explains why these guys are so brutal. And in one part near the end, when the ancient jap guys wakes up and go slashing everyone in half, in a brief conversation, a group of these guys decides to try to negotiate some alliance with Lara so they can get out of there alive, they even argue against each other for a while until one of them decides to say "fuck it", and take the lead into attacking Lara, and making the others follow him.

See, this is what I mean. This the kind of stuff that lacked in WNO.

The Wolf3D has quite a community of modders to this day still, although nowhere near as big, though.
There was this one WWI Trench Warfare themed one (not the one called Trench Warfare) that was actually really immersive.

If you want to see what the Wolf3D community has done in terms of modernized source ports, check out ECWolf and its techdemo .pk3. I think it actually incorporates some ZDoom code as well.

Monsters being attack should immediately change their target and try to destroy the turret I'd say. If every monster would attack the turret, it'd be useless in crowded maps, being immediately destroyed. If monsters would not change their target, it could shoot forever and ever, being overpowered.

I tried that, doesn't work. Possibly because of the MONSTER flag I added to the turret sphere.

I'm assuming you need to add that so it can track and attack monsters on its own.

Furthermore using CMF_Trackowner doesn't work either. most likely because the turretmissile and turretsphere are two different entities and it forgets the owner in the process.

Yea, just realized the turret is actually a monster, not a projectile. Whoops.
I suggest you make the projectiles and the player same species and add +THRUSPECIES, or you could do the same with +GHOST and +THRUGHOST.
And instead of A_CountDown its also possible to do A_GiveInventory and check for a certain amount of inventory, then call A_Die.

I edited the assault rifle fire smoothly in full-auto, and then semi-auto when looking down the sight.
I also eventually gave it a 30 round magazine because I like laying down a swath of automatic fire into groups of enemies or particularly strong ones. It's not very tactical, but it's fucking Doom, shit flies. Also switched out the firing sound to something that sounds like the crack of an actual rifle. Graphics for it are great (though i guess the muzzleflash could be a little bit more dynamic)

I really like the shotgun though, realistic spread, so if you take aim at a guy across the yard, you can score the full pattern onto him 90% of the time, the reload is decent enough, I like that you pump the first shell into the chamber if the gun is empty, that's attention to detail. Also, my favorite bit is the sound of the shell bouncing on the floor and against walls, if you're wearing a good pair of headphones, it sounds so incredibly lifelike and good, it really feels like the brass and plastic is bouncing on the floor next to you.

Rifle and pump shotgun are my go-to guns most of the time.
Rocketlauncher is actually very unsatisfying and I dislike the spiral travel, makes it harder to aim, I just end up magdumping into crowds and windows, I never savor it.

I've replaced the Demolition Chaingun's cosmetics with that of the Bulletstorm Chaingun, so now you can ED-209 all up in their shit, since the Bulletstorm sorta kinda resembles that gun when you hold it. I also fucked with the bullet explosion sound and effects so they linger around a bit less.

It didn't anything hilariously wrong, like doors that didn't open or inappropriately textured lifts or hey cyberdemon in a tight hallway. But it's pretty basic, we're used to all these elaborate traps and godawful switch puzzles and everything. The chaingunner barricades is probably the neatest thing, but you'd have to use block monster linedefs to keep them from wandering away from their posts, and maybe space them out so they become more dangerous without murdering each other.

Yeah. I think that's also why the 200 minutes of /vr/ megawad is better suited for it because most of the maps assumed they would need to start off relatively easy and the maps are rather small, so there's not a whole lot of backtracking when you do die.

With Hellbound and wads similar to that, you would think that the abilities for level design aesthetically in the authors would carry over to the gameplay element. I guess it's kind of the difference between the architect and the engineer.

So I'm playing Demonsteele and I hit my very first SLAYER ranking.

It took a massive amount of enemies killed at once with a lot of waves.

Maybe the meter for that rank gauge shouldn't drop so fast at lower rankings.

Personally, I think that if it's gonna act like a DMC combo meter, the enemies need to be replaced with slightly tougher monsters that have a longer windup animation for their attack.
I mean, compare the zombieman to the basic enemies in DMC3. The zombieman dies in one strike from the basic sword, and attacks in about half a second. The first enemy you meet in DMC3 winds up his attack in about a second, but takes somewhere around five or six hits to kill.

Plus, the enemies in DMC3 are in full 3D with 60FPS animation, while the zombiemen have one or two frames of windup and are 2D sprites. And on top of that the perspective and camera control is entirely different. Thus, it's really fucking hard to dodge around in a room with 5+ zombiemen in it...

And on Slaughtermaps you're probably going to be using sword waves and grenades more than melee hits.
And you'll hit SLAYER really fast if you're killing hordes with Sword waves.

Dodging isn't too bad with zombiemen and the like. I usually try to skirt around the outside of the room then swoop in.

I got SLAYER rank because of the zombiemen hallways in Alien Vendetta's map 13.
A few forward specials cleared them out really quickly and I hit S by the end.

That makes sense, especially with the philosophy of "every hit should be the player's own doing". The clicking of the gun is definitely a good indicator of when they're going to fire, but at the moment it's still too easy to open up the door and get a face full of laser without having the time to react or dodge.
I'll admit I was mostly going for pic related with hordes of easy kills, but I can give it a shot and see how it changes things.


I'll be honest and admit a little unsure about what to do with the combo meter at the moment.
That anon is partially right, it was originally designed for slaughtermaps so you can have a viability for fighting against all those guys and huge bosses...but people ijon/eric stop breaking things figured out a way to get to Slayer unbelievably quickly. Hell, at the moment it's still pretty easy to get to Slayer in just one room.
I tried to offset it with having a faster degrade time, but now it's very difficult to get it up heh on normal maps.

I'm pretty much all ears for suggestions, if you lads have anything in mind.

Blade is weak by default, gets stronger with kills you're chaining. Power goes away completely when you aren't killing or you finish killing a huge group.

Instead of racking up combos it becomes about racking up kills.

Another thing to mention is that Shinobi PS2 did also tie a timer to it's sword. Your life would drain after awhile without killing since your sword is basically bloodthirsty or something.

Forgot the story about it but it saps the user's life when not in use.

Either way I think racking up kills with the sword would make more sense and you could make a visual effect for how strong the sword is getting too if you desired.

Well Shinobi doesn't have a combo system, it was a very direct powerup with each kill making you able to kill the next enemy stronger.

It made it so chaining a group of enemies would let you one shot a boss in a boss battle.
