Ive been re aquiring a lot of old PS1 games. Ive got most of the obvious titles, resident evil, command and conquer etc. I come here today to ask about any hidden gems i may have missed or not been aware of

I would also like to know. Getting into PS, so far I've only gotten Abe's Odyssey and King's Field.

Might help if you did list what you have so far.

>>1858401
As far as general recommendations, I'd say the PS1 crash and Spyro games are obligatory if you enjoy platformers, and if you like Abe's Oddysee, get Abe's Exoddus as well. Castlevania Symphony of the Night is also very good, if a bit easy, and graphically and audio-wise holds up very well. In general the PS1 had a nice library, but that should help get you started.

Also plenty of RPGs on the system. You've got Final Fantasy VII-IX, Final Fantasy Tactics, Brave Fencer Musashi, Threads of Fate, Xenogears, Grandia, Lunar 1 and 2, Breath of Fire III and IV, Wild Arms 1 and 2, Parasite Eve, Persona 1 and 2, Tales of Destiny and Tales of Eternia (called Destiny II in the US), Suikoden 1 and 2, etc. For some of those it really depends on how much you're willing to spend on them, but a fair amount fall within $15-30.

>>1858423
I own Spyro 1 as well as Crash 1. I've never cared for either of them, I find them very boring. I don't see why people regard them so highly.

Abe's Odyssey is really something though, the backgrounds are beautiful at points.

>> No.1858439

>>1858431
Well, Spyro 2 and 3 do refine the gameplay more compared to the original (adding more to do via challenges; though admittedly some people prefer the straight simplicity of the original), as does Crash 2 and 3, if that was the main issue you were having. Maybe consider giving Ripto's Rage and Crash 2 a try at least?

>> No.1858440

>>1858439
If I find them for a good price, I would definitely pick them up. I'm also looking to start a collection, a slow growing collection.

>> No.1858443

>>1858440
Crash 2 and 3 are generally cheap to find copies of; generally about $10-12 or less complete where I live. Spyro 2 and 3 are a bit more, and I don't see them quite as often as Crash.

CTR is also an excellent kart racer, and I'd say you should look into it even if you're not a huge fan of the main series.

>> No.1858475

What I want to know about is what OP wants to know; what are some hidden gems? Can be any genre.

>> No.1858520

>>1858475
Not sure if they're considered hidden, but the Armored Core series is awesome, they can all be found pretty cheap.

Square has a few that might be considered hidden gems. Brave Fencer Musashi is a great action/adventure game. The Bushido Blade series are incredible fighting games, if a bit unconventional.

Vigilante 8 (especially the second one) is like a perfected Twisted Metal with an incredible soundtrack and tons of character.

Monster Rancher 2 is one of the most creative monster raising games ever, the disc mechanic where you generate monsters from cd's you have lying around is really awesome.

Not sure if any of these count as hidden gems, but they're some of the best games on the ps1 that don't get talked about all the time.

It got alot of hate at the time, but Monkey Hero imo is a great game. People call it a cheap zelda knock-off, but coming from someone who never played zelda at the time, i absolutely loved its vast world, and amount of stuff to see and do.
Also small soldiers was at the time, one of my favourite games. Playing it now, the draw distance is atrocious! But nevertheless great fun. Used to play so much of that multiplayer with my mates back in the day.

Trying to think what other unobvious games there are but my memory fails me.
Muppet Monster Adventure is great fun.
C-12 Final resistance have always enjoyed too.
I've also been collecting a few PS1 games recently (most of my original games were snides [shame on me]). Bought CTR, rayman, and silent hill today for a quid each :) Got quite a few other ones too recently. As well as this been starting up a PS2 collection. Fuck me, if i had a pound for every time i saw fifa in a charity shop, fucking loathe the sight of that game. Its getting pretty hefty, and have found some great bargains (baldurs gate 2 the other day for a quid, monster hunter 1 for a quid.) But stumbling upon good/rare RPG's is really difficult. Havnt come across any great ones so far.

The Divide Enemies Within.
I can't recommend this game enough, it's such a unique experience that I think everyone should try at least once.
It's heavily inspired by Super Metroid, but, it's a completely different game due to the camera perspective and physics. It's beyond trippy, double if you love Super Metroid and games of its nature like I do.

It's kind of cliche to recommend this I guess, but I really, really like Pepsiman (Japan only). It's really weird but still fun.

Have you played Tail Concerto? That one's really fun too.

I need to go through a list or something; there really are a ton of great games you can get (and a lot that are still pretty reasonably priced), I'll post some more later. Sorry for the incomplete answers!

Quintessential action games on PSX? I've got some basics like Tenchu, MGS, and a bunch of Survival horror games. I'm not really looking for platformers like Crash or Spyro though. Though Tomba was a my first PSX game back in the day and always holds a special place in my heart.
