I'm lazy, otherwise I'd do the only known review of this demo.

Someone should do a video on it.

This game was being developed by Doomsday Software. Here's their website from 1998.

http://wayback.archive.org/web/19980204214243/http://www.doomsdaysoftware.com/

> We are making a video game called Ascension. The final product will be an on-line, graphical, multi-player, fantasy Role Playing Game. The framework we created so far is in the likeness of Ultima Online and Diablo.

> We created a fully functional internet playable demo that shows off what we have done so far. Ascension is a highly customizable game that comes with a world builder! Our world builder is very different from other builders of this genre because anyone can add their own graphics. If you are a graphic artist, it will be very easy to make you own completely cumstomizable world.

> We have screen shots of the game in action, which can be found by clicking the "Screen shots" link to the left. For more info on Ascension, check out the "Ascension" link to the left.

And, here's their website from 2000.

http://wayback.archive.org/web/20001210072700/http://www.doomsdaysoftware.com/

> NEWS May 19th 2000

> We have decided to post the source code to Ascension. Joe and I have no time or money to continue to support this game. So when the game crashes don't send me mail. I can't do much about it.

> Do what you will. Oh yeah, this code was written by two poor guys. Our intention was to get something done with virtually no resources. Not to make the ideal OOP design. So don't bitch about strange functions that go nowhere.

> Goddamn I'm sick of looking at it. Here you go = Whole enchilada, source and exes and all (5 meg).

All the EXE and ZIP links are 404, though, so thanks for uploading what you had.

It is quite likely this is him, maybe he knows

Wow, this is pretty neat. The gaming archaeology is my favorite part of this board. It's an important contribution /vr/ gives to gaming and the internet. I haven't seen an archaeology thread in a while, so it's refreshing to see this and really home we can get a response from the creators or find the source.

There's some archaeology happening in the Japanese PC thread, though I'm mostly just flipping through obscure webpages to collect info on abandoned Windows 9x games. ShadowFlare's apparently a great Diablo-like developed by a Japanese dev, Denyusha, that got localized around the turn of the millennium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5trP9fiCBQ

It's certainly better remembered than other early Windows games from Japan, like Dark Eyes (UO-like MMORPG made by the developers of Time Crisis 3/4) or Yoshio Kiya's Die Gekirin series.

I'm trying to find more info on KSS' Radio Zone, a 3DCG first-person adventure game where you explore an irradiated region to complete goals within a time limit. It's just one of many titles that like to pop up on foreign auction sites, then giving me something to search for in Google. The pre-Windows Japanese PC games are documented rather well by comparison, as are Korean games thanks to Hardcore Gaming 101.

i am interested in this thread for the sake of archiving the code
