This man is a shining example of humanity. Someone who is not afraid to be embarrassed or show his weaknesses because he loves to entertain and make people happy. His spirit shines through in everything he does.

With the passing of Robin Williams I feel that it's important to recognize these types of people because they won't be around forever. It's so rare to find someone who can do no wrong and draw no hatred.

God bless, Arino. I have no doubt that this man's perseverance has inspired thousands across the world to keep going.

Spoilers at how episodes end. If you watch episode 2 it may say "oh he lost/won episode 1!".

A lot of episodes are really good, there are some bad ones but it's best to just watch all of them and skip the ones you don't like, and watch them later when you have a kachou deprivation.

If possible, watch in order, basically. The Piratebay torrent in the OP has almost every episode.

While an interesting fact, was the show ever based around doing "retro" games? I mean, the concept of retro. Was their intention to only play retro games? I remember him playing an Xbox game early on, so that can't be it.

So there was a live challenge held in Odaiba on 8/16. Anyone else in Japan go? Despite being hot as hell, it was a fun little 40 minute show.

Some highlights

-The game played was Battletoads, and the challenge was to clear stage 10.
-Arino lost the race twice in the first part before calling two kids up to help; neither made it past the gas in the first area.
-A guy was called up but Arino kicked him off stage after the guy said he didn’t have confidence.
-The last helper was a guy who claimed to have beaten Battletoads before. He took out the electricity shooters, but died when he tried to duck under the gas.
-Takahashi showed up with the headband Arino wore in the original episode, but he still ran out of continues.
-AD Yanai came out and revealed another famicom already at stage 10.
-Arino was never able to finish the third race, and Kan declared the challenge a failure.
-Nakayama came out at the end and sang the English version of “last Continue.”
-Inoue is still doing his Beat Takeshi impression.

Uh, that was during season 1, they also played a PS2 game as well. Since season 2, they haven't touched anything newer than PSX/N64. That was also when they changed from focusing on a company for an episode, and started focusing on the game challenges.

So it may not have started that way, but it quickly developed into a retro-only type show.

I've got a few that made me love the show.
Sonic the Hedgehog because his interactions with the AD, and how every time he got a game over he cringed at the "SEGA!".
Punch-Out!!! was funny as hell.
Metroid was great. I liked how it was all a great quest for him to see if the rumor was true.
I always enjoy seeing him tackle hard games, like the Ninja Gaiden games, Castlevania 3, Golgo 13, Prince of Persia, Adventure Island, and the Ghosts N Goblins series. Those are always worth a watch.

Well, they tend to stick to Famicom, and Super Famicom, but occasionally go with similar older consoles, like the Mega Drive, PC-Engine, Neo Geo, PC-Engine-CD, Mega-CD, PSX, and now one on the Game Boy. Given that they haven't touched anything newer since the start of season 2, and call themselves "Retro Game Master" in the states, I would say it's pretty damn close to a rule, and implied if not outright stated.

Yeah, though MM4 probably wouldn't be a good challenge anyways. Sure it's megaman, but it isn't different enough from previous games to be very interesting, nor was it difficult enough for Arino to seriously struggle with. It was more than just that though. All he did was World 1, part of 2, part of one level of 7, then 8. And we only got to see small parts of only a few of those levels outside of World 1 and 8.

He was also way too relaxed, probably because they were at that inn instead of the usual place. Six hours in and he's only part way through World 2? I don't even understand how that can happen.

Then they just gave him the strategy guide to thumb through even though the game isn't really that complex, so he knew how to warp to the end. The game itself is amazing, but we got so little of it. I'd love to see him challenge it again, it really deserves more than it got from that episode.

When localizing names, the flavour of the titles should be preserved as well as the accuracy. For example, "鋼の錬金術師" lit: Steel Achemist was translated as Fullmetal Alchemist, accurate and cool. Attack on Titan is just dumb. Also, the original title was Advancing Giants, not Attacking Titans.

Yes, you're doing something wrong. The Direct Download at least should only contain the single episode. The torrents are full seasons because torrents of single episodes would be inconsistently seeded and wouldn't stay alive as easily as a single torrent per season, and it's not really that hard to deselect every episode except the one you want, and then you have the luxury of just selecting another one instead of having to go back to the site.

Don't forget, there's two people on screen- the Kachou and Arino. Arino is acting the part of ぼけ while on screen. Yes, some of his comedy makes fun of people, especially Watanabe, but in heart I don't think he's a dick, that's just his comedy act. A ぼけ is rude and impolite, after all.

>> No.1882928

>>1882916
You mean ボケ? AKA Boke, one half of a comedy duo? Because what you posted is either a plant or a photography term, not sure how it relates here.

Anyways, never thought of it like that. How do we define the separation between them? Since you're bothering to mark Arino as the Boke, is he the one playing? Isn't the boke normally the "idiot" and the tsukkomi the "straight man", and thus the role of impolitely making fun of people be his? I'm honestly curious here, never dabbled much into japanese comedy duos

>> No.1882941

>>1882928
Way to reveal your ignorance of Japanese. ぼけ and ボケ are literally the same thing.

Anyway, in Arino's comedy duo he does indeed play the ぼけ/ボケ and he brought that part over to GCCX. An equivalent in English culture, I guess, are the three stooges. You don't think Moe is really a violent dickbag, do you? No, he's clearly playing a part.

Naturally the Arino -> ボケ divide isn't so strong, but it is Arino saying and doing things he normally wouldn't be.

>> No.1882949

>>1882941
>Way to reveal your ignorance of Japanese. ぼけ and ボケ are literally the same thing.
They're literally the same sounds, yes, but one is hiragana, the other is katakana. For some reason, I can only find reference to boke (as in the comedy role) in katakana, never in hiragana, hence my confusion (although it should be asked why you're pasting the terms in hiragana/katakana anyway when romaji is a thing that exists, but that's another discussion entirely).

But anyways, would you then describe a boke as the typical "funny man" in the western role, but snarkier? And that Arino is playing both roles in GCCX? I'm honestly interested in this because it's an interesting idea, one member of a comedy duo having to fill both roles as he's alone. Would we divide Kachou/Arino as "Arino is the player, Kachou is the commentator"?

>> No.1882954

Digging your hole deeper. It can be written either way with perfect clarity despite being more common in Katakana; I only wrote it as ぼけ because I didn't want to switch to the katakana typer. I didn't use romaji out of habit, I didn't even think of it.

There's no 1:1 English equivalent. That is a good question, I guess you could say Arino is the abunai guy while the Kachou is the "You look like Majin Buu" guy.

>> No.1886801

I've lurked in GCCX threads before and checked out an episode before. I found it to be pretty boring and didn't quite see the appeal.

With this thread, I decided to check out OP's Super Mario Land video and give it a second chance, and I enjoyed it a great deal. I think I see the appeal and the charm that people like about the show that I didn't see the first episode I watched.

Reading through, people seemed to like the Go By Train episode, so I watched that and liked it a great deal. Then I watched Pilotwings and liked it even more. I think I might be a fan now.

protip: watch in broadcasting order. Episodes often spoil earlier ones (e.g. he lost last time but this time, will we win?!) and there's often a mini-continuity in between games like megaman 1, 2, 4, and so on; there's ADs that stick around for the whole season and if you just watch random episodes you won't really get to know them.

if you really wanna watch the whole show i'd recommend against skipping straight to episodes that interest you. look forward to the battletoads episode, rather than just skipping to it and then going back.

Most people in entertainment business work under agencies. These agencies are responsible for finding them work, handling their schedules/paperwork/whatever, so they assign managers to do that. Depending on the agency (Arino is under Shouchiku, which is apparently the second biggest owarai agency), a manager handles anything between 1 to 10 people or even more, so when considering all the variables involved in the show business, going through different managers is nothing special.

No, the idea of trying to beat an old game in a seating and make something out of it, not just "game comedy".

Arino is not like Downtown, or like Ariyoshi or even like Summers. He hosts GCCX out of a lucky thing. Don't get me wrong, I really like him. It's just that on every other show he is on he is a regular, with other 10 comedians, all on the same level. He has a very specific audience, which is a shitload of people, of course, but he's not "Downtown" popular. You often see when he goes to other places and talk with the candy store owners, they sometimes "Know who he is, but don't remember his name"

>> No.1892832

In the old Mega Man challenges he tried various stages quickly after giving up on one around the beginning. He could have done the same thing this time, but the editors might have just not included it. When you make an episode out of 12 hours of footage (and a big part of is taken by other segments), they have to make lots of compromises.
Also, he has had lots of dumb luck moments in the past.

Super Mario Land made it pretty obvious how little script affects the show.

a person has to have a certain mindset and be able to see the world in a humorous way. that's something that develops in childhood and shapes your personality for life. you can go to school to learn to be a better comedian but that has nothing to do with being a naturally funny person.

Taito: Bought by Square-Enix
Koei: Merged with Tecmo
Capcom: A shell of its former self with no remaining talent.
Sega: Still somewhat relevant as a publisher, and owner of Atlus.
Hudson Soft: Devoured by Konami
ASCII Entertainment: Mergered into oblivion
Namco: Merged into Bandai Namco.
Chunsoft: Merged into Spike Chunsoft.
Konami: Frontend for Kojima Productions.

Don't forget all the people in the sub groups saying how they weren't going to sub some older eps like Strider, Gradius, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Vice: Project Doom, and Blaster Master because of how "boring" they are, and yet we have Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, Atomic Runner, and Legend of the River King 2.

Oh well, at least they are attempting to stay more or less current now. I guess I'm just spoiled as an anime fan, I'm too used to having episodes get released fully subbed within a few days of air.

Except the part where Kakaricho said he's working on Koushien, an episode from Season 13. Don't worry people, all episodes are going to be subbed sooner or later. Subbers just simply translate the episodes they like first.

That's because they are, zari-gani works on DKC2 (Season 17) and Kakaricho mentioned he is translating Koushien. (Season 13)

>nothing came of them

Subbing stuff takes time, you know. Especially, when it's a hobby project.

>yet both parts of mega man X come first and then super mario land comes out within days of it's airing

SA-GCCX said they translate they personally like first. They also said they are going to sub every episode sooner or later, so don't worry.

also, yeah i agree on princess tomato, I actually rented that one time as a kid. Moment another sub group shows up that might threaten their status as the best, they'll start subbing what people want though.

Like when Clover subbed Ghouls n' Ghosts, The goons immediately went to work on Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, Donkey Kong Country and Battletoads and released those within a few weeks.

The English announcer gets a lot more flack than he deserves. The guy was basically given the script and they let him read it through once and used his dry run. The guy does try his best to add 'umpf' to what he's talking about. (The Wings of Madola was one of his better episodes.) I once said I would LOVE to see him play the SuperFamicom port of Sim City. It's a cozy as fuck game and he was absolutely diving into the city building aspect of Actraiser. I suspect it would be one of those games where he wouldn't say much.

For the actual challenge portion they would have to make it something like that he has to reach metropolis (there is no way he's reaching megaopolis within 14 hours). But if he spent all day making and remaking cities I could see him reaching metropolis by the end.
