What's the best NES rpg?
Pic related, what I'm about to start playing right now.
The SNES is renowned for its RPG library, but what about the NES?

In terms of overall design, gameplay and customization, I think Dragon Quest III was the best one I played. That game is fucking huge, has good music, tough dungeons, lots of spells and different classes to customize your party. It's a pretty complete RPG experience.
Mother would be my other choice, for a NES game, it has a great visual and sound presentation, the plot and dialogues are pretty good, controls feel a lot better than in most other RPGs of the time, being able to walk in 8 directions, and the fact there isn't a "overworld map", but the game itself is a big open world map makes it a very ambitious and impressive game.

I really enjoyed DQ 1, and I beat it over a weekend of binge playing it. DQ2 was fun but I felt there was a lack of direction like the first one but with actual tangible tasks you were supposed to be accomplishing instead of a checklist of items you have to collect. I hated how you kept 'just missing' your cousin for the beginning of the game. By the time I got all 3 of them together I was just so tired of the game.
When I tried to play DQ3 there was something about the open endedness of it that turned me off. Like, I can't say it's bad. It's definitely not bad. But I need to give that another look because people call it the best JRPG of all time and I was just so overwhelmed by it at the beginning. When given a plethora of options to choose from I always feel like i'm making the wrong decision and it gives me this feeling of anxiety while I play, like i'm afraid I'm going to have to start over again.

Final Fantasy 2 (game mechanics aside that game had a very serious story and dealt with some heavy shit especially for a famicom rpg, I like the mechanics too because Im a saga fan)
Destiny of an Emperor
Dragon Quest 2
Final Fantasy

I would probably say Dragon Quest 4 then Final Fantasy 3 and then maybe mother after that.

DW3 and Mother are good games, but the original NES versions have that quality Dragon Quest interface, which I personally can't stand.

Honestly I'd have to say that FF3 is the best RPG I know of for the NES. It's much more polished than FF1, and substantially larger and more complex than DW3 or DW4.

I really like the original Final Fantasy, but I think that for someone to really really appreciate it you have to look at Amano's art for the game because it helps you put everything into a better perspective of the general feel that the developers were probably going for. Like, every Final Fantasy up to around twelve probably still retains the general atmosphere the first one had, with only slight deviations for periods within the games.

Shit this probably didn't make any sense.

What you're playing is my favorite JRPG of all time. While the game takes away the ability of choosing classes for your characters by giving all of them set classes, it allows for the game to focus on being more story oriented. And even with as little dialogue as the game has, it has an excellent story and characters, imo even better than the average SNES or PSX JRPG. Using the multiple segmented chapters, it's able to craft everyone's motivations, hero and villain, properly, and keep the plot focused where it needs to go. Early plot points do a great job of foreshadowing things in later chapters.

Also, no giant space flea from nowhere. The final boss is exactly who it should be.

Gameplay wise, they did another good job. Like DQ3, grinding is well balanced, probably even moreso because of every character having set classes. It's also kinda fun to start a chapter, level up the the character(s), finish the story for that chapter, and then start the next chapter with a fresh party at level 1. Once you start recruiting the characters in Chapter 5, they tend to be around the right level to join the party, so you don't have to sit there and try to level them up to meet the rest of the characters. The game also shares EXP amongst all of your party members, so even characters you don't play a lot don't get left behind.

Outside of a couple instances of censorship (Churches being called Houses of Healing and Puff-Puff), the NES translation is more true to the Japanese script than the DS remake. Also, the added 6th Chapter in the remakes just doesn't add anything storywise. Honestly, it hurts the narative, imo. My only complaint about the NES version is that in Chapter 5 you only control the main Hero while the rest of the party is AI controlled. While the AI is usually pretty good, it's still an annoyance. Thankfully, there's a Game Genie code that will give you control of all of your party members in chapter 5 (YYEXVTGE).
