Yellowing can not be prevented you fucking idiot, it's a chemical reaction in the plastic itself. You can slow down the process but it can never be 100% prevented. Something in the fire retardant plastic oxidizes and causes the yellowing. There is an ingredient in their plastic mix giving off electrons and binding with other molecules. The oxygen in the peroxide replaces the bromine fire redardant in the plastic 1:1 it's not just "changing the color"
>risk exposing my hardware
It's not like it's going to eat through your plastic, or melt your console like some of the lights people use with retrobright
>Some people would even imitate it or accelerate yellowing to give things a more vintage look.
I'm sorry, but I believe that doing that and anyone who does that is stupid. If you buy yourself a nearly new console/cartridge only to ruin it with yellowing, you've wasted money on the product and the chemicals. Just buy something already yellow. no one wants it anyway! And fuck, the chemicals to accelerate aging are 10 times more volatile that the one used to reverse it.

>> No.1861849

That's a bad argument.
At the time, it was the best, and most affordable fire retardant for plastic. Most electronics manufacturers used it.

This isn't a problem now because of advancements in technology, which have given us better ways to prevent burning, while also avoiding discoloration.

If you seriously think the manufacturers intended for the consoles to yellow with age, you're deluded.

Wrong. Yellowing isn't preventable. It's not because of a lack of care, it's because it was made shittily. If happens, it was always going to happen.
>Once something is yellowed it's ruined as far as a collector/enthusiast is concerned.
Also wrong. Yellowing is reversible. If all you care about is playability, it's a non-issue. If you care about monetary value, it's also a non-issue.

Nice track record, btw.

I'm not really into getting super rare stuff, but some of the stuff in this thread I really want.

After reading more about Nintendo's history, I want to expand my appreciation of their stuff into the cards. I'd love to get my hands on their oldest cards, from the original daitoryo hanafuda and trump decks from the 1900's to the wartime nationalist cards of the 1940's. And of course some new hanafuda decks that I can use without fear of damaging them.

Does anyone know anything about shopping for super old Nintendo stuff? Some of them are practically antiques, so I'm not sure where to look especially as a non-Japanese speaking American.

Plastic that had become overly brittle because of the reaction will gain back most of its original flexibility (what little there was), and the colorization is more than surface deep. This gets all the way through.
