I have a 1001 that won't read discs but a 5501 that can but the cords to make connect to the tv are broken. Would it be safe/work to try to transplant the disc drive/reader thingy from the 5501 to the 1001?

Just try it.
It's not really complicated machinery in there.

Just remember where each screw goes.

It should most of the drive mechanisms are relatively identical. If it looks the same under the lid it should fit. Also the Playstation is the piss easiest drive to swap. It doesn't even have any screws holding it in at all once you take the top off the case you just lift it up off its pegs. Just be slightly careful with the ribbon cable. That's about all you need to know.

OP, the answer is: yes you can transplant the lens drives.

I did this after I found out my DTL-H3000 ribbon was torn, so I replaced it with my SCPH-9001 model lens and now it runs fine.

For the record, I'm referring to the whole lens, ribbon, and power connectors. The only thing you need to be aware of is the length the ribbon must travel to get reattached to the motherboard.

Yeah I was mostly just being cautious and asking first because I'm borderline tech illiterate. Yeah, I had to get rid of a little stand for the 5501 drive and chip off the little plastic bits holding it up. I don't have any of my old PS1 games in this house so I put in an old jazz CD of mine for testing and it works.

Honestly, I'm glad I did this even though I could have just ordered the serial cable. The 5501 I got because by cousin threw it out. The 1001 was the first PS1 I got and was the first console I personally owned and wasn't just a family thing or belonging to my brother. So I'd much rather play on the 1001 anyway.

Why not just get new cords for your 5501, or try to use the ones from the 1001 if you can?

The 1001 could use standard AV cables. The 5501 only could use them when plugged into the serial port. I don't have the serial port one. Right when I got the screwdriver I though of just ordering a serial one but then I realized I'd much rather play my games on the 1001 than the 5501, see >>1849182. The 1001 was a gift/handmedown from my uncle anyway and the 5501 was just something I got for three dollars at a flea market.

Anon I just checked my own 1001 for how to fix the optics array, it's really very simple and you can get new ones for less than 20 dollars online. Your 5501 should work fine, just check that's it's a KSM 440 A-- model.
