So, I just recently imported a Sega Saturn. A Grey Japanese one. Man, I'm still waiting for Asuka 120% and Sakura Taisen Columns to come in the mail, but other than that, does anyone know of any really awesome and import friendly Saturn games? It's a shame a lot of these games were not brought over - the Saturn's library in Japan is insane.

Pretty much any Japanese vertical shooter. Also most of the arcade fighters if you're into that. Elevator Actions Returns, as well.

Don't understand why you'd import a Saturn when you can just use the Action Replay that does literally everything you need, but whatever.

Yeah - I mainly got a Japanese one just because I thought the color scheme looked a tad cooler, and I wouldn't have to worry about mod-chipping and whatnot. I understand that they made that Import Free Cart that you can put in to disable region locking, but I hear that it doesn't work for some games. I was just wanting to focus more on the Japanese library without running into any kind of problems, haha.

I love the Saturn. In fact I live in Japan and can highly recommend most import games. Bubble Symphony and Darius Gaiden are my favorites.

If you like fighting games, these saturn games are really good:
X-Men Vs. Street Fighter
Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter
Vampire Savior(Must-have, Darkstalkers 3)
Street Fighter Zero 3

These ports are pretty much arcade perfect with little to no ingame load times. You will need the 4MB RAM cartridge or Action Replay 4-in-1 to play them.

Other random recommendations:
Outrun(best port, includes arranged OST and 60fps mode)
Soukyugurentai(woefully underrated ST-V/Saturn shoot-em-up by Raizing)
Silhouette Mirage(superior to Playstation version)
Darius Gaiden
Saturn Bomberman(best 2D Bomberman made, supports up to 10 players locally)

Super-expensive games which you should play on CD-R if you modchip your Saturn:

There's also the JP Model 2, which is white. The V Saturn and Hi Saturn also had different colors IIRC.

If you go for the PAL Saturn option you will either need to install a 50/60Hz switch/universal BIOS chip, or a 50/60Hz switch/Action Replay 4-in-1.(second option means not being able to use ingame saving with the memory cartridge)

The AR 4-in-1 can back up saves in it's menu but does not support saving directly to it ingame as it's recognized as a RAM cartridge. You will still be able to play some games that require a lot of memory but something like Dezaemon 2 will not be playable.(saves in this game are 1000-2000 blocks)

Also moving saves back and forth is extremely tedious and the AR 4-in-1 has a high chance of corrupting all your saves due to the shitty cartridge slot on the Saturn.

I finally got one ten years ago and have since been re-living the lost childhood I could never afford.

Besides, all the good games were never localized and I had to learn Japanese first to get the most out of it.

Saturn during its day was fucking trash. No games and it was expensive as fuck.

Now it's cheap and people know about all those japanese games that never saw the light of day over here. That and different logic goes into buying retro consoles compared to new ones. With new consoles, you're looking for the best console. With retro stuff, it doesn't really matter if the other consoles were better - you buy it because it's an oddity with a small but cool collection of niche games.
