Can we talk about this game? Sure it's no Banjo-Kazooie but it's still worth being mentioned from time to time.

I was wondering what's the best version of the game? Playstation or PC?

I was thinking about replaying it so if you guys could help me decide which version to pick it would be much appreaciated.

>> No.1843740

Fun fact:
Croc started development as a 3D platform game Mario spinoff starring Yoshi that was intended to be made exclusively for Nintendo 64. Argonaut pitched the game to Nintendo but was rejected.

I had Croc 1 for the PC and while it ran well it suffered from some sound problems. Every system I have tried it on had the problem too, so I don't know what the deal with that was. The pitch on all the voices would lower for some reason. Sounded terrible.

Croc 2 is a more polished game. It has hub worlds, vehicle sections, more story stuff, and it's generally much more varied than Croc 1.

The fact that the developers forced you replay the entire stage from the beginning if you failed one of their bullshit mini-games for a Gobbo (catching crystals, 'pick the right box', killing enemies with that pad-thingy, etc.) if you wanted to go for 100% makes me dread playing it again.

Alright then, just to clarify:

The levels and hub-worlds in Croc 2 feel small, barren and uninspired. Not only are there fewer levels with far less challenge (and whatever little challenge there is is largely derived from the imprecise control and lack of checkpoints), the vehicle sections just feel gimmicky and tacked on.

The introduction of a shop with items that are absolutely required to 100% a level just adds nuisance instead of depth to the gameplay. Instead of relying on your own thoroughness and exploration instincts to complete a level (like in the first Croc) you are forced to grind for crystals in order to buy contrived and completely unnecessary items in order to fully complete a level (which you unfortunately have to do all over again if you arrived without said items).

Plus, the secret 'post-game' world is nothing more than the four previous hub worlds populated by regular enemies, with the 'levels' being nothing more than glorified caves holding keys you need to proceed to the next world.

And the 100% ending is total bollocks.

Does that help?

Croc 1 is a very simplistic, repetitive game. Most of the levels within each hub are the same. the game has a super thin story. The game's soundtrack is inferior to Croc 2.

Croc 2 has more varied levels, better draw distances, more enemy variety, more boss variety, and more characters. The hubs in Croc 2 are fun and full of cute little details. Such as the snowball kids in the Snow Hub.

>> No.1847387

What the fuck is up with the PC version of Croc?
Every single retail version, and subsequent patches for those, include different hardware acceleration options. Some are glide and software only, others are d3d only, some include all of the above, some only have support for specific d3d cards.

I'm pretty sure the best version is PC one, just for the fact that it supports crazy high resolutions if I remember correctly.

Also that theme and snow music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eCPRrxQvrs :3

All this nostalgia, Croc was pretty much what Mario 64 was for most kids to me!

It came out in like 1997 when hardware acceleration was in its infancy and you had several competing standards - sometimes you had to write support for the card by hand, because even though they "supported" a standard, they did it awfully so they needed workarounds.

>The end came when we pitched to do a 3D platform game, the likes of which had never been done before. We mocked up a prototype using Yoshi. It was essentially the world's first 3D platform game and was obviously a big risk - Nintendo had never let an outside company use their characters before, and weren't about to, either. This is the moment the deal fell apart. We later made that game into Croc: Legend of the Gobbos for the PlayStation, Saturn and PC, which became our biggest ever game in terms of sales and also in royalties, since we owned the IP.

Due to tech limitations, the Saturn version screwed around with Croc's size vs the size of the maps because the Saturn couldn't load Croc 1's maps. By shrinking the map dimensions, they could cheat it. Also, missing transparencies and worst framerate.

I'm still grumpy the N64 port was cancelled. We did get Buck Bumble instead, though.

What a shitty tradeoff.

Imagine how good Croc would have been if it the Yoshi game happened. With Nintendo's polish and Yoshi's setting it could be one of the best games for the N64.

A man can dream. It would either been okay or abysmal.

Speaking of Yoshi, whenever he's handed off to Artoon it tends to create a big fuss. The games must be really rehashy. I'm hoping for the Yoshi game by Good-Feel to be pretty great.
