/vr/, what is the most unsettling old game you know of? Not horror games, I'm talking about those games that are just plain eerie thanks to hardware limitations.

So far I've got
>Daggerfall
>Unreal
>Crusaders of Might and Magic

The Net Yarōze game Clone is really unsettling. It has that low-poly 3D and 2D sprite mix with eerie sounds and no real music, just ambiance.

Unreal is easily one of the best single player FPS games ever made but it is really not scary or unsettling for the most part. Daggerfall definitely is in the dungeons full of noisy enemies, or if you are locked outside the city of Daggerfall at night.

The Might and Magic games just feel weird sometimes, especially 6. Some of those sound effects gave me nightmares.

Unreal? Unsettling?
Damn, man. I consider it one of the comfiest games there ever was. I can still spend hours wandering around just taking in the scenery, even on the really desolate later levels.

I guess I'm thinking of all the days I spent sneaking out of bed at 4AM to play Unreal when I was really little. I was already paranoid that I was going to get caught by my parents, so all the weird, surreal shit got to me.

Ecco the Dolphin is unsettling as fuck and it's not a horror game. I didn't know if I should post it though, considering how infamous it is on /vr/ for having that quality.

I got freaked out by Adventure sometimes, game could be intense.

It's so far the only game I want for Atari that I don't yet have.

>>1842546
not retro and sort of regrettable, but when Minecraft first added the nether I thought that was some spooky shit, particularly when you first got inside and instantly heard monsters screaming in agony all around you.

And I hate to make yet another not-retro post, but I was looking at Mario Galaxy levels in a fan-made editor once, and goddamn, that just gave me some terrible vibes. Something about seeing the multiple t-pose marios and luigis standing together at the different spawn points, the lighting being totally different, and the way that all the bosses just stood there motionless really creeped me out.

I always got that same vibe. The part in the beginning where your pod gets abducted is still terrifying every time, even though I know its coming.

I think a lot of that vibe has to do with the (excellent) music. FM synthesis in general has a harsh, unsettling feel to it.

i've been trying to look for it for like years now and was starting to think it never existed and was just part of my imagination. wow.

I always thought Faxanadu was creepy as hell. The general atmosphere of hopelessness coupled with creepy monster design and a dark color palette.

It must be stated however that much like a previous anon mentioned, this was a game I played at 3am when I was supposed to be sleeping. I mean just look at this shit.

Fun game, though.

When i was a kid i tried to play Wolfenstein 3D and diablo but something just scared me of and made me quit. I think Wolf 3D convination of cheesy cartoonish graphics and gore and weird enemy sounds was too much to me i guess, and Diablo title screen and graphics were scary.

There's a shop relatively early in the game that sells Death and a Magic Shield (Not 100% sure on the shield). Just farm up the gold to get Death and you'll blow through 90% of the game, at least to the point where you get your final gear set and then it's cake anyway.

I think whats great about Unreal's atmosphere is there is a duality of a kind of terror and of the beauty of the world, so depending on how you interact with the world (either by fighting or exploring) you can feel both comfy and spooped, or if you project spoopines from real life like >>1843075
then there you go.

I mean the player character just crashed on an alien world and saw the entire crew die pretty much, basically everything on the planet wants you dead, and I think you can infer that the prisoner wants to leave.

Shadow of the Beast had a weird, surreal, eerie atmosphere throughout the whole game. The music was very fitting too.

As a kid, I also played an old text adventure where you're trying to escape from a dungeon. There's a bunch of monsters you have to fight, but sometimes you're powerless against them without some special item. It's funny because the descriptions were just very short, but I guess my imagination amplified everything and made it seem really menacing.

Shadowgate 64 is just plain creepy through and through. It's a first person, point and click style puzzle game. You search through empty rooms and towers with little to no ambient music. Good game too.

seconded. I played PiD alot back in the day, even beat it eventually, although it throws some serious curveballs at you. the atmosphere was definitely eerie, and the story of the dreaming alien god only added to that.
