Enforcing the 1999 cutoff point is one of the most autistic things /vr/ does. GBA has been discontinued for years now.

>> No.1840185 [DELETED]

We do it for a reason. We're not autistic. Just look at the releases of other consoles around 1999~2002 and then it should be apparent on why we have the cutoff.

The GBA was discontinued in 2008, the same year GTA IV came out. I don't think the year it was discontinued is a very positive argument in support of keeping it on /vr/.

When you dump a ROM and release it into the internet, some people do it for the greater good, so they do it anonymously, some people are like tripfags and they want attention and e-cred so they make damn sure you know the name of the group who's responsible for the ROM you're playing. That's all there is to it.

The only one I had was the grey GameBoy and the see-through GameBoy Color. They're both gone now. The GameBoy had power problems and the GB Color I found somehow submerged in water, and everything inside rotted. I don't see a reason to by another one or have more than one.

I love the GB family, but I have this issue... the original GB is shit hardware wise, in every sense (other than it being indestructible).
The GBC on the other hand is too small.
And the GBA, even when playing GB/GBC games has muiffled, dirty audio unlike the rest of it's brothers.

Why the fuck was Nintendo so cheap not to include a backlight in a worldwide released game boy until 2003? And why did they never made a GBC of the size of the original GB or the pocket?

Size OR light OR sound.

Of all the game boy iterations, the Game Boy Color was my favorite. I loved the capcom zelda games. The pocket was neat too, but I played my GBC the most out of all of em. Mine is lime green.

Also, pic related. Used to love this game. Glad I was autistic enough to save all my boxes and manuals and stuff.

>> No.1842102

GameBoy was hefty, but always felt rock solid. The sound was also very good.

GameBoy Pocket was smaller, used AAA batteries, but I didn't like it as much.

GameBoy Color was good, but not as solid as GB.

I really liked the wider control for the GBA, but the GBA SP screen is better only because of the backlight.

Also enjoyed classic GBA for playing GBC games.

I'll stop there, since its pushing the retro.

It's my favorite body style for sure. However instead of a backlight I installed an AGS 101 screen on one of mine. In pic related you can see how fucking amazing it looks compared to the non modded one. Unfortunately because of shit pic you can't tell the clarity but it's totally there. I love that thing to death.

Others include my original blue SP, then the Gamebro (the tribal tat one) some gave to me, and the red one which was also given to me by someone I know. His retarded brother tried to paint it white with like white out or some shit then used high powered nail polish to try to remove it off, so it looks fucking terrible. I just have it to have it honestly because he gave it to me.
The teal Color is mine from when it first came out (lost my blue GB Pocket though which I'm forever saddened by).

Then I've got my DMG I like to do mods on and use for music, with custom NES buttons, pink backlight, an LED mod that lights the top of the DMG red when my batteries are low. And when I get some time I'll be installing a 1/4" prosound mod and a variable clock v4 mod. The latter of which will give me a knob on the side of my gameboy that I can turn to change the speed of the clock so that the sound (and gameplay if you're playing games) is pitched up or down depending on how you turn it. There's also an on/off switch so you don't have to worry about getting back to normal when you just want to play a game at normal speed.

Also I have a broken gray DMG I use for parts that isn't really worth showing and an OOT edition 3DS also not pictured.

I got the old brick the year the "colors" (and clear too!) came out but for xmas I had to settle for the old grey brick.... but it came with a free game of killer instinct.

after that, teal gbc, glacier white gba, then ds at launch with MP:H demo.

- The old gb is now literally a brick, does work.
- gbc functions but has hardware issues. It loads a black rectangle instead of the nintendo logo 99% of the time. Since it bugged out 14yrs ago Ive only got it working on 2 occasions.
- gba needs to be modded with backlight.... but the oldschool nyko snake light will work till then!
- ds is retired..... replaced with 3ds XL (golden zelda edition)

games? fire emblem, pokemon, final fantasy legend 2 & the ff1-6 ports. Liking dk returns 3d right now but playing it cramps my giant hands on that tiny "xl" ds.

Not entirely related, but enough so that it probably belongs here. I have a PSP, with MasterBoy. On select Gameboy games, it automatically switches to Super Gameboy to give supported games color. I know you can switch it back, but I really like it. Anyways, how does the Super Gameboy give color to games such as Pokemon? And does anybody else have everything turn a light blue in Pokemon Blue/Red? I ask because I really like the few colors it gets right, like right at the beginning when you are creating a new character. Oak, Gary, the Pokemon in the intro cinematic, the giant Pokemon letters are a nice shade of yellow, it is all just so fucking perfect. Then in game everything is fucking eyeraping cyan. Took me a while to assemble them all. It's nothing special; most of these are beaten up from childhood love. I wish I had taken better care of them (especially the NES SP and the Torchic SP, fuck), but child me was dumb. The Famicom SP has the least-scratched casing but the screen broke when a friend sat on it, so I transplanted my AGS-101 into it and it lives again as one of my most beautiful handhelds.

A lot of them were just given to me by either siblings or friends who didn't want them anymore, so that's why the collection's so oddly inflated (i.e. four teal GBCs). I have had a DS Lite and DSi, but I traded/sold those.

Actually the SGB and GBC have different methods for colorizing games.

For the SGB, some games have actual built-in code for telling the SGB what color palettes to display and when. Pokemon is one such game that supports SGB, and will display different palettes in the overworld depending on which area you're in and will also give corresponding palettes to Pokemon in battle.

GBC colorizes GB games by assigning them one singular palette that presides over the entire game. The GBC bios actually has a built-in list of all GB games and it picks which palette to use. For Pokemon, it uses a blue (with red sprites) palette for Pokemon Blue and a red (with green sprites) palette for Pokemon Red. You can also change to one of twelve other palettes by pressing a button combo on startup like >>1848162 shows.

As for why everything in Pokemon is blue, maybe you just didn't play very far into the game. Once you leave Pallet Town, Route 1 takes on a green palette, I think.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to add: someone actually made a full-color hack for Pokemon Red that upgrades the game to GBC mode with full color (ala Pokemon G/S/C). It's slightly buggy (you'll see the colors flip out on a couple menus) but breathes a ton of life into an aging game.

Super Game Boy can also applies different palettes to different areas on screen, allowing the few games designed with it in mind to have more than 4 colors on-screen at once.

how does the bios have palettes for every game already built in when new games came out after the bios was written?

I'm still fucking mad that Nintendo didn't enable SGB support for VC games. Donkey Kong was one of the ones that was BEAUTIFUL on SGB but instead Nintendo just tosses it onto VC in black and white.

Homebrew emulators have had SGB support since the fucking DS. Come on, Nintendo.

I guess I jumped the gun when I said 'every'. I should've said 'many'. Still, very few (if any) grey-cart GB games came out after the GBC was released.

I found this weird too.
The Game Boy emulators on DS like Lameboy supported SGB borders and colors. It's obviously not that hard to implement.

This infographic is wrong. DS is not a GameBoy system.

DS started of parallel to GameBoy. Then the GameBoy line was dropped entirely, and the DS line became the main one. They were never one and the same, though.
