Just straight out gonna say Hexen 1. What do you guys think? Loved the game. I feel like it was always underrated and unknown. I could be wrong. What an excellent piece of work.

>> No.1832008

Fun combat, great music, cool atmosphere, great textures, level design so atrocious and amateurish it made me rage countless times.

>> No.1832021

I tried it awhile ago, and didn't like it. I liked the concept of having a hub world with more areas opening up as you played, but it was extremely confusing. Sometimes you'd hit a button and it would say nothing, others it would say something along the lines of "Door opened in the dildo room" which was useless if the game never communicates to you where the dildo room is.

Most of my time playing this game was spent walking through empty levels, humping all the walls for hours.

I wish there were more fantasy themed FPS.

>> No.1832206

I started with Hexen II and instantly fell in love with it. There is something about art design that only Raven managed to capture: not just fantasy, but... satanic fantasy. It's consistent throughout Heretic as well as Shadowcaster. And the fitting gloomy music. Naturally, since it was Hexen II, I wanted to check the original Hexen, but back then I wasn't impressed much by it. The Doom engine felt awkward, I spent an hour on the seven portals failing to see the first switch and had to conduct a walkthrough for it, and when in the rusty metal world I pushed some other switches, the message "one ninth of the puzzle has been solved" somehow made me very very depressed. Come on, ONE NINTH? You mean I have to do something like this (I wasn't even sure what I did) eight times more? I dropped it off there.

It wasn't until recently I rediscovered my interest in retro games, and FPS/RPG hybrids in particular. It was fun returning to it after so many years, I remembered the seven portals, remembered that first switch. I beat the game without any walkthroughs this time. I expected it to be hard, but it wasn't. Once you set your mind like: "Okay, the game is about switches, and it's going to try to hide them, so always keep in mind to look out for them," it works like a charm, and the fun rolls in. I guess that makes the game unique, in terms of what rules it imposes onto the player. Heavy exploring. Heavy memorization. Pattern deduction. And the bleak, disturbed world sets the perfect atmosphere to accompany those actions.

I think it may actually be becoming a bit overrated lately. The game has poor enemy variety such that combat is often repetitive, especially on the harder difficulties. Also find the puzzle system a little hamfisted at times ("you have completed 1/3 of the puzzle" oh boy).

Biggest problem is all the switches that aren't labeled.
"Stairs have risen..." or "You hear a door creak in the distance..." are easy to understand, but temporary switches that don't say what they do? And you have to figure out whether they counteract some other switch or just have a timed effect, where they do their thing, and so on.
I think it wasn't until my third or so playthrough that I even figured out what the temp switches in Guardian of Steel even did, or that they counteracted eachother.

Oh, and all those items which, while fun in multiplayer, are just stupid in single player. Send an ettin back to the start of the map, woop.

The atmosphere and mapping in Hexen can be pretty great. I can see what they were going for in Hexen, I just don't think they pulled it off very well. Hexen 2, I felt, was a better example of the concept, helped by puzzles that were a little more sensible than random switch hunts.

Hexen is my favorite FPS. I have it for DOS and for the N64. I originally picked it up for 4.99 in a bargain bin and it has been my favorite ever since. I only beat it once, though. I don't actually know any of the puzzles beyond the seven portals and half of the dark wood by memory, so every replay I have to figure it out from scratch.

Hexen 2 doesn't do anything for me. I think it is the really ugly graphics that turn me off nearly instantly.

Pic related for the sort of sense of 3d scale that Hexen can do that Doom really doesn't. Though looking up and down isn't really convenient in the default game.

one of my favorites of all time. I used to play the n64 port alot.

switch hunting could be a bit excessive, but other than that the whole thing is excellent. the main change I would make is change the centaurs so that they would hold their shields up a shorter time, maybe a second or so, so they wouldn't be tedious to fight.

my only other issue is the instruction manual saying the legion got turned into ettins, when obviously they should be centaurs (the church became dark bishops, and I think the mages became the floating torsos in hub 5)

Was Hexen that popular? I never looked up the sales, I assume it did alright, but I also assumed the reason Hexen 2 wasn't as well known is simply because Hexen got a very mixed reception. I'm sure the competition was also a factor.

I thought it was a great game, with a much deeper and darker atmosphere than Heretic. The level design was more sprawling and confusing though, and sometimes I found myself wandering around looking for a clue, or some way to get into an area I could see but not reach. Eventually in a couple spots I was so stuck that I needed to consult a walkthrough, but otherwise managed to stumble around and figure out the puzzles.

I never really got into the "lore" of these games, but rather just played them as separate games altogether. Also tried the Hexen add-on (Deathkings of the Dark Citadel), but it seemed much harder, with tons of monsters everywhere so I never finished it (fighting so many respawning monsters gets on my nerves...) Also tried the Quake engine sequel, but somehow I didn't like it as much as Quake itself, so gave up early on. I think it would have been better if they just expanded the original Hexen to be more RPG-like than switching to Quake engine, but they were probably afraid people wouldn't buy it for using "outdated" technology (despite the fact that a good, well-crafted game using old tech is still a good game...)

Did anyone play their old Amiga RPG? It's a bit like Dungeon Master or Eye of the Beholder series, etc. with real-time action in old school grid-based dungeons. I tried it once and it seemed pretty easy at first, but I quickly got TPK'd on the second level by some two-headed giant or ogre looking thing. Probably should have run away back to the first level...

>> No.1842617

>>1842567
Deathkings of the Dark Citadel had too much a fast respawn rate, where enemies would reappear on a location literally two minutes after you killed them. I guess that's ok when you already know all the puzzles, but for a first playthrough, which requires slow and careful exploration, it was a pain in the ass.
I remember finding a custom fix which lowered the spawn rate, but I already finished the game by that time, so I never used it.

It's closer to an RPG, but not quite as much as Strife in terms of NPC interaction, buying stuff from shops, etc. Then again Strife doesn't have choice of class to play... Anyway, someone made a vanilla Hexen hub where you can sort of interact with NPCs (but it's really just them telling you stuff, no choices to make) and you can "buy" a few things from a shop, but you don't have coins or whatever to play with. I guess some source ports have extended the game enough to remedy all this, but I never cared enough to try them. I just play these games as FPS and other games when I want an RPG.

>>1850131
I think it's all unlocking a bunch of stuff in one room with a portal, so unless you go back to that exact spot you won't notice anything. At least that's how I remember it (been quite a few years since I played through...)

Crusader is so much better than everybody else in that game it isn't even funny. You can win whole bossfights pretty much by just spamming Tome + ice staff.

I got really excited for that game until I saw it was made by Techland, aka Dead Island makers.. They are awful developers, who covered a basic action game with unenjoyable quests and awful balancing. Not to mention the fucking boring characters, writing, and level-up system.

I just don't think someone so actively incompetent could make a good game. The wasn't bad, the action was quite fun, but it was surrounded by stupid decisions that ANY competent person would have pointed out the flaws of.

I'll keep an eye out, though.

My greatest complaint towards hexen would be that each class only has 4 weapons, and "technically" its just melee, 2 weapons, and the BFG weapon which makes combat in the early hubs feel really repetitive and boring sometimes
Don't get me wrong, I love hexen but this was always the thing that frustrated me in replays, also Warrior should have the Quietus be usable when depowered, I mean come on, all his sprites and art show him using a sword and you are never able to actually use one.

it kind of makes sense because melee uses no mana, weapon 2 uses blue mana, weapon 3 uses green mana, and the ultimate uses both. still, there should've been another weapon for more variety, maybe using both mana types with less cost. also could've used more monster types. I would've like to see wendigos after hub 1, like in menelkirs tomb.

the biggest change I would make to hexen is the centaurs. id have them hold their shields for half as long so they're less tedious to fight.

I was playing Heretic just now and I think it's kind of dull. I just beat the third mission of episode 1. The level design isn't especially good and there hasn't been any crazy action. It seems to just be "use crossbow if you see something until you don't see it anymore". Maybe picking the middle difficulty mode was a mistake.
