What did you guys think of the ESRB, or your equivalent, when it popped up?

>> No.1831484

I thought it was cool because it pointed me directly to all the badass games with blood and gore and sex.

>> No.1831492

>>1831484
And then you could buy them in your normal store no problem at all.

K-A games always appealed to me far more though.

It's a way for overprotective mother hens to dictate how much fun their children are allowed to have.

In short, it is cancer.

doom isnt fun because it has blood and gore, it's fun because it's fun

there were lots of really bad M-rated games around the time this stuff came out. Shitty FMV games and endless mortal kombat knockoffs, etc.

>> No.1831578

>>1831573
Right, and it's an M-rated game, so kids can't buy it. I really don't see the point you're trying to make, especially considering I never mentioned that blood and gore are what makes a game fun.

It was a necessity after the Night Trap debacle, and our main defense against those who blame every new entertainment medium(like they did with rock music) for killings and school shootings.

It meant I had to drag my parents to the store if I wanted something M rated

My older sister is super protective over me, so she refused to let me play games that were M rated. She would even follow me to game store and tell the clerk that I'm not allowed to buy M rated games.
I had to ninja my way to the vidya shop and buy the games I wanted. She would always do the stupid
>if all your friends jumped off the roof, would you jump after them? :^)
as if I bought those games to impress my friends. I liked those games because I liked them.

This blog post is dedicated to all those kids who missed all those great games thanks to ESRB rating and overprotective siblings/parents.

I remember the N64 games having ELSPA ratings, whatever that was. I got pic related when I was 8 years old so nobody actually paid any attention to the ratings.

>> No.1831642

>>1831628
Only when ELSPA was replaced by PEGI/BBFC/USK in 2003 did distrubutors start caring about them. I'm not sure about Germany though, as they were the leading cause of many games getting censored long before that.(like Contra/Probotector, where they replaced humans with robots)

Was never an issue for me. My parents knew I wasn't a fucking idiot who would copy what he saw on TV or video games.

>> No.1831743

>>1831569
Wow, your trolling is beyond just shit and into a whole new realm of awful. It's so bad I can't even report it as shitposting because it's too brilliantly idiotic to call it mere shitposting.

Bravo, sir, you have transcended the boundaries of stupid.

>> No.1831748

I was relieved - I already knew about the efforts to try and censor games here in MURKA so when I heard that the industry was trying to keep itself reined in I was pleased, because it meant that bullshit wasn't going to fly.

And this was years before I had ever taken a civics class, mind you.

>> No.1831768

It's fine. It's there so people can't sue video game companies for corrupting their children. Although they still certainly try. You have idiot parents that will buy GTA for their kids, and then get upset at what the game is about, and blame the store, the company, devil music, etc. Most parents would just take the game away, but some will call up whoever, and game stores and companies obviously don't want to deal with that shit.

It's a necessity as video games grew. Same with ratings for movies and television.

And if your parents didn't allow you to play M rated games, if ratings didn't exist, you think they would still allow you to play them? Probably not.

I had it pretty good though, I guess. Parents were very conservative, but they bought me Mortal Kombat when I turned 4. If they had not allowed me certain games, I'd probably hate the ratings system too.

>> No.1831780

>>1831768
They wouldn't win anyway, and they would be more likely to be jailed for contempt of court, wasting the court's time, and be stuck with the legal fees of a rather large company which would throw them out of their house and onto the streets.

>> No.1831815

>>1831780
You're right, but that's still a bit of time and money wasted on the companies part.

In a perfect world, we wouldn't need it, since parents would make informed and reasonable decisions of what their kids can play.

It's basically a safety net. It's the same reason some games get censored. It's not because of some moral decision to not want kids to see tits or whatever, it's them not wanting to deal with the people that would complain about it or possibly take legal action.

And not every company is large enough to be able to to just deal with it. Especially back in those days.

>> No.1831862

>>1831627
>if all your friends jumped off the roof, would you jump after them? :^)
"Depends. Did the people who jump off survive and say they enjoy it? I find it hard to believe every single one of my friends would jump off of a roof, let alone get on it in the first place, unless they had a very good reason.

I want these games because people say they're fun and don't seem to cause adverse affects. If jumping off a roof was said to be fun and there were no broken bones or deaths due to it, I would jump off the roof."

This was always my response. Worked fine.
I never really had trouble with ESRB because my dad was very uncaring about it. My mom was like "DAT GAMES RATED TEEE" and my dad let me play Duke Nukem with the boobies turned on.

Good times.

>> No.1832040

I fucking hate the ESRB,

Reminds me of days when I wasn't allowed to play M rated games at the age of freaking 15 and 16. I am glad I am adult and don't have to deal with that shit now. It doesn't matter, I played M games behind my parents back and while I was caught a few times. Nothing bad happened, just lost the computer/console I was playing on a few times for a bit.

>>1831581

Actually there are tons of good E rated and T rated games. Mario and Zelda are prime examples.

>> No.1832080

ESRB was, and is, excellent.

By rating games, you let them know exactly what audience it's for. The only way I could see it bugging you is if a) You're literally underaged or b) you don't like being carded, which really isn't an issue when you're grown considering beer, cigarettes, and porn all require you to be of age anyway.

1832126

I'm not sure if anybody cared about the USK in retro times. You had to look very carefully to see if a game was rated for all ages or 16+.
The main force to be reckoned with was the BPJS, now BPJM, who could ban or restrict games. At first they applied this to simple shooting games like River Raid but as games evolved they became more picky. They're the reason why games had humans replaced with robots and the like.
The system changed in 2003 after a school shooting which was publicly blamed on Counterstrike. The BPJM surprisingly choose not to restrict Counterstrike and new laws were passed that gave the USK more weight.
