Oh yeah, drillings and vierlings are pretty heavy, but they make sense if you live somewhere where they won't allow you to hunt with semi-automatics or manual repeaters (this last one being particularly rare to restrict), giving you the option of actually having more than one or two shots.

Otherwise, a regular pump-action or self-loading shotgun would be lighter and more versatile for general use. As well, a semi-automatic or any regular pump, bolt, or lever action rifle would as well be more versatile.

Some countries also restrict how many long guns you can own for hunting (Sweden has a limit of 4, where you'll have to get special permission for a 5th, and then another for a 6th, and so on), so if you get a double-shotgun with a rifle barrel underneath, or a double-rifle with a shotgun barrel underneath, you can get a bit of a multi purpose gun, that with a bit of creative use of loadings can be used to hunt anything from bird to moose, all while only taking one slot on your permit.

They'd make kickass wallhangers though, if you have that kind of cash.
Also, the breach end and the muzzle totally look like screaming faces sometimes.

First weapon's secondary fire that were meant to reflect projectiles still hurt you more often than not, regardless of succesful reflection.
Secondary fire from frost shards, arc of death and firestorm are virtually useless.
Quietus' primary slash is a complete mana waste when you could be firing secondary for 2x the mana and 4x the damage, in AoE.
Fighter's fifth hidden weapon is 50% useless. Unpowered axe is weaker than your fucking fist, why would you ever want it over the hammer?
Centaurs are way less annoying to deal with, specially for the cleric, but now what should be melee-only encounters are full of projectiles. Extremely narrow corridor + fat projectile spam when you're not even guaranteed to have a ranged weapon. Thanks Obama.
Death wyvern gets a massive health boost, but no behavior change, meaning he is just as easy to tail and kill without taking in the original map, just takes longer.
RPG-y character balance is fucked. Cleric was supposed to be a wimp early game to compensate for his ultimate weapon, meanwhile the fighter had massive damage and a shitty ultimate. Now every character is godlike all the time (mage's second weapon one hits EVERY non-boss monster and he has infinite ammo ffs).

Hexercise a shit. Go play Wrath of Cronos.

A dude on IRC had the idea that, since 200 minute /vr/ worked out well, we do another community project. This time, we make a map pack one room at a time - one dude makes a room, passes it on to the next guy, he adds a room, etc etc etc.

The rules (or something) are this:
- Boom format. We did Doom format last time, so this is the next step up.
- TEST YOUR MAPS IN PRBOOM+. We don't need ZDoomisms screwing things up for those who want to play a limit-removing map pack.
- You get the textures in vanilla Doom 2, along with cc4-tex.wad. This should be enough for most purposes.
- There's no time limit for making a room, but if it takes more than a day you might be trying too hard.
- Mark off extension areas with ALLBLACK, to signal that your room ends here.
- Try to keep a consistent style. If you're going off a techbase map, don't just go 100% hell. If you want to change styles, make a transition in the entrance to your room, or have your room be the transition.

Besides that, you're free to do what you want.

Upload the map you're working on to Best-Ever when you're done with your room. When you upload the file, use the naming scheme "vr_oneroom_map##_r#.wad". For example, room 12 of MAP17 would be vr_oneroom_map17_r12.wad.
Again, this is to keep track of things.

IMX is gone. We don't know the reason, but quitting right after people told him to stop with the boogeymanning and tried to mute a channel where everyone had a voice.
He left (possibly still posts but really does it matter?), then stopped making threads (not that important, but having a single trip to make threads with allows people to filter out /doom/ if they want), took down the playlist (again not that important since there's a ton of Doom-related videos on the web), all for seemingly no reason.

Idea for video editing: Do what most modern FPSes do and have like two tracks for Peace and for Fighting, interspersing the two together between as you explore or fight.

Doom RPG isn't supposed to be played with Doom 1. The error you're getting is for the MEGAsphere, which doesn't exist in Doom 1.

There's one that's very, very similar to the default Windows synth if you want it called SCC1T2.sf2.

The default Windows Synth uses very low quality, compressed, mono samples from the Roland SC-55. You can find a soundfont that emulates that machine called SC-55_1.9.sf2, by Patch93. I have a folder on Mediafire for these.

A fitting soundtrack, a cool theme to the map, challenging opposition, but not too bullshitty (as in, if there's a lot of monsters with an unfair advantage to the player, there should either be lots of room for the player to move, and/or adequate firepower and health to deal with it), if there's monsters up on pillars firing at the player (such as chaingunners or a certain kind of agitating skeleton), there should be places to take cover, maybe tall walls, or low ceilings to obstruct their fire.
If a wall comes down to reveal a bunch of monsters, don't make it so that the player is unavoidably surrounded and gangraped, that's no fun, there should be at least one opening for the player to get out of the crowd without getting mauled.

Also, again, music. I hate nothing more than the stock music playing. Especially d_runnin

Just beat e4m1 for the first time ever, on my UV run through Doom and then Doom 2 next. I had thought it was borderline impossible after about twenty deaths to the baron, but then I found the rockets and persevered to the end on my next attempt.

After leaving that nightmare, casually strafing and taking down that caco rush at the start of e4m2, followed by turning a corner and seeing a medikit at the start, was a very powerful experience. I can't remember the last time a modern game gave me such satisfaction; they're just too easy to take pride in your efforts. Excited to try the rest of e4m2, despite what I've heard about it.

I have a question I haven't seen discussed in one of these threads yet - what do you all think is the most confusing map from the core games (plus TNT and Plutonia, I suppose)? Or at least, one that you always forget a switch / teleporter location on? I definitely spent ten minutes apiece on a couple levels so far because I didn't realize I needed to hit a particular switch two separate times, etc.

Marine is boring because you end up using only 1~3 rapid fire weapons, not even BFGs are attractive once you get that PP high power minigun. It basically boils down to high power minigun and plasma rifle + laser rifle for accuracy. You dont need anything else.
Scout is similar since pistols will outclass almost everything, but he has a more satisfying gameplay in my opinion. Its pretty easy to have 5~6 widely different pistols and still crave for more weapon slots.

Technician just uses all kinds of weapons (except most pistols), highly modded. Thats basically it.
Nightmare gives you a ton of exotic weapons from zombies, so you will eventually have 6 overpowered and/or fun weapons. Playing doom 2 for example I had a SS plasmatic shrapnel super shotgun as my sniping weapon, with 2 other sniper mods to spare too, before I reached map 16. You're virtually guaranteed to have 6 overpowered weapons like mother-in-law and autocannon at your disposal. Just use whatever till you can assemble cool things, then rape.

Its not that i die often, in fact Ive beaten ultimate doom, doom 2, tnt and plutonia on UV without dying too many times. Its just that i hate replaying a large portion of the game again if i screw up. I like challenge but simultaneously i dont like to replay a long section again if i fail.

Why would you ever want limited ammo instead of infinite via cheats? This is not a facetious response, they are not completely analogous but there's a similar underlying principle re: game design. Unlimited saving is giving the player a very powerful resource with almost no drawbacks or limitations.

For me personally, I start saving when a wad is getting really long or if I feel it's throwing nasty "gotcha!" traps at me. But only when I haven't saved in a while can I get in the zone and play my hardest, doing everything I can to survive.

Holy shit I just played the last map of Double Impact, you get chased around by multiple cyber demons as you try to find the switch to open the exit. And then the Spider mastermind shows up.

All in all it's a fantastic level set.

These are shadow enemies and they're really damn rare.

If you want to see more of them, increase your Aura Curve setting in the Doom RPG Options menu.

It's really just a Shadow Nightmare Cyberdemon.

Well, that can happen on later levels when monster levels get higher. Whether a monster becomes unique or not is determined by their Energy stat. The higher it is, the higher the chance they turn unique. The Aura Curve just pushes the minimum bounds upwards so they become more common.

You probably have less time to notice the monsters meandering about when there are more monsters trying to kill you. You won't even be looking at the one shotgun guy walking sideways when there are four more currently shooting you.

Nice map. I liked the way the secrets were structured, especially the nukage river area. A few things:

- I noticed that you were very strict with ammo, which isn't really a bad thing in this case, although it did make getting 100% kills a little annoying. However, consider adding more ammo in secrets or on lower difficulties (I played on UV) since it's easy to run out of ammo in a few areas (one case is if you grab the red key and immediately go to the yellow key area) where it's difficult to get around enemies and get your next ammo pickup. Throwing a berserk pack early on somewhere would fix this easy.

- You use PLAT1 on a 64 unit line a few times. Personally I think cutting off half the texture like that looks really ugly. I'd recommend trying SHAWN2, SHAWN3, or SILVER 1 instead.

- I noticed you often use SUPPORT2 as a border texture. This looks nice in most cases, but sometimes you use it asymmetrically and it looks a bit off. This shows up in the lower ceiling sector where the map start is, where you have the SUPPORT2 border on the left but not the right. I think it would look okay either with or without it, so either remove the one that's there or add a symmetrical one on the right. Same thing in the outdoor nukage area between the lower floor and the raised platform.

- A minor gripe, but backtracking to get back to the yellow key door got a bit tedious, especially because getting 2 of the secrets there requires you to head all the way around through the blue door and teleporter. Maybe add some stairs in the outdoor nukage area up to the platform with the yellow door that appear once you take the teleporter?

Overall, still a pretty cool map. Looking forward to see whatever you make next.

Whenever I play DoomRL Arsenal + HUD on GZDoom, I can't bind any keys to drop weapons, and I have weapon dropping enabled.

Do I need to download DoomRPG and load it in with DoomRL to get full functionality? Also, I recall DoomRPG needing a dev build of ZDoom to work, is this true for GZDoom too?

I play without doomRL and it works fine, so no.
I recall some people having this problem and then finding out there were two separated drop keys in the options.
I personally use zdoom dev builds and "drop item" works fine.
