Have any of you got some recommendations for obscure FPS games from the Quake 2 era?

It's a weird era which doesn't really have much attention. We almost went from Doom to Quake 1 to Quake 3 in terms of recognition and I'd like to explore what else came out at the time of note. If possible working on Windows 7 so I can play it without too much messing around

SiN Gold is on GOG for a very good price, and its expansion Wages of Sin is said to be just as good if not better. Both games are the epitome of a Quake II FPS conceived prior to Half-Life's impact, with really solid production values, plenty of challenge, and some distinct charm (lotsa meta-text on the Carmack/Romero rivalry, for example).

Requiem: Avenging Angel is pretty god.
Though it does have some very strange issues with newer versions of Windows with all triggers not triggering, so you get stuck fairly early on.

A lot of those aren't Quake 2 era, they're Doom based not even Quake based.

But yeah, those are the two that come in mind. Maybe also Soldier of Fortune, but that might be post-Half-Life..

Hexen II was released around the Quake II era, but it was based on the Quake engine. Heretic II was released in the Quake II era as well and is based off of id Tech 2, but it's nothing like the previous games.
