Just bought King's Field with original case & manual for $15, how good is the game? How long is it?

Pictured is what I bought.

I hope you're patient.

Protip: Follow the path from the starting point until you get to a house. There's a chest inside that has some good starting gear in it.

I always liked the tall PS1 cases. Shame they decided to change them.

Are there boring stretches?
Overall, what would you rate the game?

OP what is that purple thing under the game disc? my long-box never had anything like that. As for your purchase its a worthwhile adventure, difficult, and filled with secrets.

Not sure, I bought it online yesterday and I haven't received it yet. It looks to me like some sort of demo disc.

That KF cd is going to be scratched to hell.
You can always tell because the seller places the CD down on table or item instead of just leaving it on the fucking spindle.

I know, and I'm a bit worried by this, but as long as it's playable, I'll be happy.

Not OP, but I was just playing King`s Field 2 (us) and noticed I completed this as King`s Field (eur). According to wikipedia KF2 (us) is KF3 (jap) so is Shadow Tower the next game in the series?

The game is slow and hard. It's like Dark Souls if it had a more limited version of Morrowind's combat, with early 90s first person controls. It can be very rewarding to play but also requires a lot of effort.

Yeah no kidding. Its a game where dying to the first enemy is a very real possibility.

>Fight some slime thing in Kings Field
>Have to pitch camera to hit it right
>A second one comes out of no where
>dead
All in sub 3 minutes.

Theres a weapon in the starting area but its behind a secret door and there's a skeleton inside.

No Shadow Tower is in itself a separate series, with a PS2 sequel-in-name-only. Much of the same game mechanics of King's Field, as well as ones they would continue to feature in their RPGs are show-cased in Shadow Tower, further more laying the ground-work for the Souls Series. If you ever have the chance to pick it up, do so, just as challenging, secretive, and atmospheric as hell.

King's Field 4 is on PS2. I think a lot of Western players wondered if they missed number 3 just like Final Fantasy 4-6 when they decided to just re-sync the numbering. Unfortunately, with King's Field it was just in time for the last game in the series.

>>1813106
Yes, OP is probably aware but it bears mentioning that these games are FROM software games, developed by the same team that ultimately created the Souls series and some of the important elements can be seen in their early forms.

I think it's behind a waterfall actually. There's usually something like that at the beginning of all these games that gives a serious player a real challenge for a real reward. It's one of those cases where a casual might even dare joke "Oh no a skellington popped out! 3spooky5... oh shit it slaughtered me... and again... and again and again and again" and then he either gives up on the whole series forever or gets serious.

It definitely separates the men from the boys.

Just saw some gameplay for Shadow Tower, looks really enjoyable. I like the fact that there's no music, too.

I've been playing through it for the first time recently and i agree on the music, it does a lot for the atmosphere.

I'd say 4/5 if you have the nerve for it. Don't play it for too long, it'll wear on you, and you won't want to touch it for weeks.

And we all know what it's like to put down an old game and come back to it. You have no idea what the fuck is going on anymore.

I agree, and in many ways I think thats a sign of a good RPG, the fact your adventure has weight to it, and you find yourself in need of actual rest at some point during it. When an adventure in a game leaves me feeling wanting, it can actually be really distracting, it also slowly drains the enjoyment out it, I'm sure I'm not alone in this opinion.
