Why? Do you subscribe to the illusion that people on /vr/ are wise old sages or some stupid shit like that? The majority of stuff on here is from the Nineties anyways, and all of the discussion about eighties stuff is mostly people new to the retro consoles looking for help or talking about them, compared to the few people who were old enough to really own them and know anything about them at the time.

Most of /vr/ is only older than /v/ because /v/ is overrun by underaged shitposters.

What kind of logic is that? /vr/ exists because /v/ had way too much traffic, so they made a separate board for retro games. Having the same userbase doesn't mean one board would stop existing.

But that's wrong

And if that was the case then why aren't their separate spinoff boards for /b/? In what way is "too much traffic" even a thing that would require making another board?

/vg/, /vr/ and /biz/ were made so that people looking to discuss relatively niche or ultraspecific games/genres could get out of the shitposting extravaganza. If you talk about /vr/, /vg/, etc. on /v/ you end up with a bunch of idiots who don't realize they're in a containment board screaming LOL DAT SHIT SUCKS VEE IS FOR DA GAYMARS and other stupidity like that. The overwhelming majority of /v/'s population doesn't leave /v/.

Because we have far less traffic, and we aren't thrown out as THE PLACE FOR TEH COOL KIDZ TO TALK ABOUT VIDYA ON TEH INTERWEBZ and shit like that.

I know witch hunting is stupid, but Reddit, Tumblr, etc. seepage is what ultimately killed /v/. And then those people realized that they could be masturbatory one hundred percent of the time on /vg/. /vr/ has the good luck to seem impenetrable and slow so that they don't all come over here as well.

I assure you when Doom 4 launches Doomgen will be overrun for a bit, and I'd assume that happens to other game discussions whenever a reboot or remake happens.

>> No.1807704

>>1807692
>But that's wrong

How? How is that wrong? That's the point. That's why /v/ spawned /vg/ and yet there's no /ag/ or /cog/. Other than /b/, /v/ has the highest traffic of any board on this entire website. It has more traffic than /co/, /a/, and /vr/ COMBINED.

>And if that was the case then why aren't their separate spinoff boards for /b/?

There are. /b/ and /a/ used to be the same board. But generally, /b/ gets by because it's a NSFW board where almost anything goes. The issue is both user enjoyment and moderation. /v/'s huge amount of traffic makes it a very difficult board to moderate. So /vg/ and /vr/ were created to lessen the traffic and make the board more manageable, as well as to address complaints about 24/7 generals that never left the board.

>/vg/, /vr/ and /biz/ were made so that people looking to discuss relatively niche or ultraspecific games/genres could get out of the shitposting extravaganza

That is completely incorrect. I've given quantifiable examples of the benefits of the boards and you just give subjective bullshit because you have some kind of anti-/v/ fetish. But the reasons I've given are exactly why additional vidya-themed boards were made.

Anon, your 'quantifiable benefits' are nice and all, but they are not the reason /v/ was split up into 3 different boards. If traffic alone was cause for splitting up boards, we'd have a thousand split boards.

The problem was not that the traffic was too high, but that the traffic was overwhelmingly shitposting that was drowning out actual conversation and the mods couldn't - or won't, depending on who you ask - deal with it. So they just made other boards for people who want to discuss specific things and left /v/ to general discussion.

What? How do you come to that conclusion? The only boards that have any traffic problems at all are /b/ and /v/. /b/ is a non-issue since it's kinda supposed to be a chaotic place of horror.

/v/ has had three splinter boards. /vp/, /vr/, and /vg/. Why thousands? Why do you go to thousands? Why would /v/ needs thousands? You're exaggerating to prove a point that isn't there.

>The problem was not that the traffic was too high, but that the traffic was overwhelmingly shitposting

And there's your non-quantifiable opinion.

But hey, I'll humor you. Why was it shitposting? Because the traffic was heavy. Traffic being heavy made the board harder to moderate, so people felt more free to post dumb things without as much fear of consequence. So no, you're wrong. It WAS all about traffic. Shitposting is just a natural effect of having high traffic.

You're letting your subjective, irrational anti-/v/ opinions get in the way of thinking. People like to scapegoat boards that have bad reputations. It's immature and it shows a lack of personal responsibility.

/v/ is just /vr/ with modern games and more traffic, when you get down to it.

Also I started to notice that all the idiots I was debating with were so completely clueless about the industry that there was no way they could've been through more than one console generation, I had completely underestimated how many underage users there were and it put the behaviour on the board into a new light. I wasn't fighting with idiots and trolls, I was fighting with an endless supply of children...

Then /vr/ came along and it was an absolute god-send, I honestly wish I could chat about more recent titles here with this much more matue community but I understand that the retro setting at least filters in the people who care about the industry as a whole instead of the kids defendibg their first console.

People here are also elitist assholes and or hipsters wanting to increase their street cred. Too much influx of tripfags, fucked up janitors, and you said it yourself, trolls. At least /v/ is pretty fast so you either get answers or the thread dies, and the people are more straightforward about expressing their opinions.

>A complete lack of fresh content usually causes most boards to degrade in quality over time

In the Doom threads we try to produce new stuff. Sometimes stuff for /vr/ as a whole. (Pic related, though not directed at you.) Doom content creation has a leg up though since it's piss easy to do, the only things that would be easier are things that come with a built in editor out of the box like HOMM.

Obviously other retro games could have content created for them in a similar manner, like Quake maps or HOMM2/3 maps or even campaigns, etc.

What about a focus on playing stuff together? Either online for some of the stuff that supports it or just playing a game at the same time. The latter would probably be a godsend to stuff that has no online. Lord knows we can have fun from the simplest shit, even just from "wow this boss is bullshit."

We could even have a "/vr/ plays with itself" thread where you post mutliplayer server info, regardless of game. It would probably help get players into games that would otherwise be overlooked if they were in their own thread. For instance earlier today I saw an AOE1 thread where people were discussing playing together but nothing seemed like it was gonna end up happening. Maybe a thread like that would attract the interest of more anons?

I mean, /vr/ is apparently like 10 guys, why not play to that strength and build a tight-knit community from it? I dunno though, I'm just spitballing.

It IS big deal to try it out because the only people cool with it would be the /v/ migrant fans of the 6th gen and 6th gen game discussion of whom I can guarantee outnumber everyone else here. A "test" would just lead to implementation.

By definition a retro board does not need new stuff. There's 30+ years of video games to discuss already, start talking about them.

I suppose making and keeping it a separarte board is the best solution, /v/ is the second biggest board, it can handle and even needs more subboards.
