Help me buy a white Sega saturn!

All the ones I see are super yellowed and ones that are not have really high price+shipping

Is there anyhting I could do to get rid of the yellow, or just keep looking for a clean one

I would be happy just to have a Saturn period. I should save up $50 for one sometime...

What is bad about yellowing? Do your retro systems have to look like they're brand new?

>> No.1806107

>>1806104
Yellow doesn't mean old.
It means, smoking and other crap was in the air all around it for long periods.

I have never owned anything that turned yelow (systems or what not)

Not him, but extreme yellowing looks fucking gross.

But that's wrong.
The bromine added to most ABS plastics as a cheap fire-retardant causes the plastics to discolor and turn yellow when introduced to UV light, which is literally everywhere.

I think it looks beautiful when it's uniform. It's like the plastic equivalent of patina.

Why hasn't mine turned yellow then? I've had it in the sun before even. It's 20 years old now

I have a grey HST-0001 in nice cosmetic condition I'd sell.

It's going to need a new laser assembly soon, though. It's spotty at times. I think the part is like $15.

No, it just means it was left out on the sun for years.

and fyi you don't need retrobrite, you just need some hydrogen peroxide. You can easily buy that in fashion salons, hairdressers use them often. Just make sure you use it in a well ventilated place (its fumes are explosive), and dilate it with a lot of water before flushing.

Try tweaking the laser pot before getting a whole new laser. I had so many machines I got as being incapable of reading games, and I only had to give some more power to the laser.

>>1806131
Play-asia has them for 25$ plus shipping.

LOL no

>>1806537
it's UV light like >>1806110 said. It causes oxidation in the plastic. It can still yellow without ever even being in the sun. The plastic is pretty much rusting. It's a chemical reaction that can be reversed with peroxide.

You do not have to submerse the entire case in peroxide though, soak some paper towels in it then cover the console with those then cover that all in saran wrap to prevent it from drying.

cranking the potentiometer only makes it die faster, it will work for a bit but he will need a new diode eventually.

Yeah fuck ebay, it'll be 40 bucks plus shipping. I just ordered one from Play-Asia.
They took forever to ship it though, I bought it over two weeks ago and they just sent it out from their place two days ago. So that's another 2 weeks until it gets here and I've already bought a ton of J games to play...

The white ones are nice but booooy howdy do I love how that gray and blue looks. Kinda wish I would've copped a gray J one since most of my Saturn games are Japanese.

I've got a grey and purple and it's nothing special, I wish I had a white.
White consoles are glorious.

>cranking the potentiometer only makes it die faster, it will work for a bit but he will need a new diode eventually.

Wrong. The laser does get "used up" over time, but cranking the potentiometer alone won't kill it. What kills it is the age and wear that comes with normal usage. However if the laser is miscalibrated, it will return bad data, and the drive mechanism will then force it to re-read the data again and again. What should be optimally 1-2 read becomes dozens and hundreds of reads.

This accelerates the wear of the laser, and makes it die faster.

Re-adjusting the laser will cause it to read sectors without additional re-reads, so it will not make it die faster - it will make it die much slower than if it was left unadjusted.

Of course you will not get back the wear already caused, but the drive won't magically die faster just because you are giving it more power: they are DESIGNED to work under those conditions. I have a Saturn which is adjusted by factory to the highest end of the meter, and it works just right, that's just the default setting it works at.

What makes the drive die faster is the laser being wrongly adjusted, which causes more re-reads. Now, as you most likely do not have the equipment necessary to correctly adjust the laser, you can only do it via guesswork, and THAT is harmful. If you got a new laser, you could only adjust it like that; and it WILL burn up faster than the original due to that (plus, most replacement lasers are crappy Chinese ones which die faster too).

Still, a small tweak to lengthen the lifespan by a few years is preferable to buying a new laser which only works for just a few years as well.

I think they look nice but I always prefer anything I own to be a dark color, usually black. White gets dirty a lot and I'm a huge neat freak. the first like ten days you own it it looks nice then after that.... just never the same.

Another disadvantage to white consoles. They're harder to take care of and most people are lazy as hell and ruin them. So it's harder to find decent condition clean ones. Especially not for a decent/fair price.

>> No.1811589

>>1810197
Thats not even the problem!
They all only sell with no controllers or cables of any kind and still ask for high prices all of them
Its so unfair
