I beat this guy with little trouble on the original hardware, but I can't dodge his attacks on an emulator. Maybe it's one of those latency issues like with the music combos in Mother 3.

This. For the longest time I was never able to beat him while emulating. Then I recently played the real game on real hardware, and I was expecting to lose as usual. I ended up wiping the floor with him.

Emulator latency is a very real phenomenon.

You can also counter his hooks for stars.

Also he's flagged to get knocked down if you get the stomach star.

Generally the easiest way to beat him is to counter the first 2 books, hold down and wait for him to crouch for his upprcut, if you did it right he'll delay it, punch him in the stomach for a star, punch again to cancel his next uppercut, use the star for a knockdown.

Rinse, repeat till he's TKOed.

This right here. You can also dodge his second uppercut, face punch until you get the rapid punches then hit the Star punch for a knock out. He'll start dodging on the third star punch so that's why you need the rapid punches.
