as for cross:

decent playstation RPG. Great aesthetic, music, battle mechanics.

terrible character development, main character, and plot. Yes I understand the plot, and it's pants on head retarded, 2deep99U, convoluted shit that was stuck into a far too many paragraphs of text in the last hour or so of gameplay.

Trigger on the other hand had all of the good points of cross, minus the cons. Short, sweet, and to the point. Also the epitome of snes-era squaresoft pixel art for the west. (we didn't get sd3)

The first Paper Mario game was pretty simple, but TTYD is one of the few games most people will agree is a 10/10. It took the first PM and gave it more options in terms of timed hits, like stylish finishes on attacks to restore star points and perfect dodges/counters. Plus, the partners actually get health points and are more like party members than just someone that stands behind Mario. Even if the first game turned you off from the other games, at least play TTYD. SPM and SS aren't worth playing. It's a really fun game.

I never get why Cross' battle mechanics are praised. It felt like a step down from Trigger's to me, like FF going from ATB to FFX's battle system. The techs weren't as cool, the hit% based on your strength was stupid, magic as items (wtf?), and overall feeling a lot clunkier than Trigger fights.

Being someone who dislikes any grinding or slow battles in my RPGs, I enjoy Mario RPGs most. If I dont feel like fighting, I just ignore the enemies, which is easy since they arent random (you can see them) and leveling isnt important. If I want a challenge I'll just do some challenge run like low level or no badge or whatever. Story is great and if I feel like exploring there are tons of secrets and easter eggs and good shit. Good music and graphics assured, and story is laidback, not that emo 2dark4u final fantasy shit. They're well made and I can play how I want, and they are always well suited for a good challenge run.

Phantasy star IV or YS 1/2 imo. Really taken a shine to Ys especially recently, it just has so much more to it, ESPECIALLY part 2.

I mean, it has a shitton of optional stuff, unlockables, extra cutscenes you can find, and everything. I've finished 2 a few times and only just found the mascot unlocks.

Plus that story. Goddamn if scaling the tower with the bell tolling/coming back down wasn't more tense/exhilarating than most of Trigger.

Now trigger is a bloody fantastic game, I will admit, and the story is great and ayla is pure waifu material but Ys has the edge in terms of content and replayability.
