ITT: Games from the DOS/Windows 9x era that are damn near impossible to play on most modern machines.

Pic-related.

>Latest AMD drivers render the game unplayable
>source code is long lost, making a source port impossible
>Star Wars now owned by Disney and EA
>Low chance of 9xbox ever coming to fruition

You're best chance is to play it on a shitty virtual machine program. RIP

Not a huge loss as it's easy to emulate the PSX version, but it did have the fully uncensored color intro and original music.

Jedi Knight was never my favorite game, but is a perfect example of early 3d games where devs actually took the "3d" part seriously. The levels are huge, usually involving enormous vertical distances. It felt huge, WAS huge, and you could pretty much explore the entire thing.

Also the Z-grade cutscenes are hillarious.

This shit is just ridiculous.
Earlier this year Nvidia removed the optimization for Sin from their latest drivers. 16 years after its original release.
How do I know it was a game-specific optimization?
The game still actually works but only if you rename the executable to quake2.exe.

My build's only a couple years old for most parts but I'm still running Vista 32 and stuff like this is why I'm afraid to upgrade. I actually played Jedi Knight just fine (though I might have been using my 8800 GTS at the time), seems like I have a sweet spot middle-machine that can play both old and new.

>> No.1798713

Getting Jedi Knight to run is going to be a task. I really want to play it, but yeah, it's a chief example of older, underrated classics (Star Trek: Elite Force, for example) that are going to have difficulty preserving.

>> No.1798716

Might as well just keep an old computer around just in case you wanna play Jedi Knight.

JK taught me to program. COG was so easy to get into with just a copy of Game File Explorer and Notepad.

Yep, so there's pretty much fuck-all chance of a good port happening. Just like with Panzer Dragoon Saga (also damning is the pitiful selection of Saturn Emulators). The best chance we have is if they remade the game from the ground-up which again, likely won't happen thanks to EA and Disney.

>>1798810
I doubt the big companies holding Star Wars hostage would be content on selling the game without DRM. It's likely the same reason there aren't any other Star Wars games on GoG.

I've actually got Win98SE (and by extension MS-DOS 7) running natively on a socket 755 setup for the purposes of recovering/archiving retrotech media (it has 5 1/4" floppy, Superdisk, Zip and Clik drives). It dual boots that and XP.

As a side bonus I can still play all these games on the Win98 side of the machine. The fastest video card Win98 supports is a 7950 GX2 using a modified Forceware driver from 2006.

I don't know what's wrong with you, but I'm able to play my copy just fine on Win7 with an Intel Core i3 without having to emulate or anything. It runs natively and smoothly, but there can be some graphical glitches with the HUD and menus screens. If you can find a copy of the disc like I somehow did, check out this page for instructions: http://jedi.majerco.net/en/jedi-knight/windows-7/

Google is your friend. Never forget that.

Tie Fighter is a hard game to get running in Win7. I know it can be done with a lot of tweaking and patching, but it's hard to find the necessary files to do so these days.

More like-

With larger LCD/ LED display resolutions- we are essentially wiping out compatibility for older games.

Dungeon Keeper for instance runs at 640x480 (but even Dungeon Keeper has a fan compatibility project "Keeper FX")

And why can't you just upscale the old games, like everyone else?

Or, you know, get a proper CRT and play everything at native resolution.

No, not hacks or patches. Just pixel-double the 640x480 image into 1280x960 and center that on your 1920x1080 panel. Problem solved. Nonsquare pixels require a little more care, but with 4K monitors becoming affordable soon, we'll have so much pixel density that minute scaling artifacts won't matter. This is coming from someone using an FW900 right now, by the way.

To the many geniuses that came up with wrappers for glide API and whatnot- I salute thee. So many old games would be absolutely impossible to play outside of basic software rendering.

If it supports 3DFX Glide there's plenty of wrappers for that.
If it doesn't you could try something like 3D-Analyze. Dunno how well that works with modern Windows though.

Star Wars Racer. I could barely get this running on XP let alone anything else.

Also Sim Theme Park, it needed fixes just to get working properly on XP too, but it might be working under modern systems with a No-CD patch.
