1795960 No.1795960 [Reply] [Original]

Walking through Manchester and I am shocked at how blatantly overpriced the retro stores are. Metal Gear Solid is being sold for £25 and £27, my nearest retro store sells it for £10 and I got it from a car boot for £2. It's ridiculous. How can anyone justify charging this much for old systems? Just spotted a PS1 going for £35, but the sticker cites 'oil leaks'. What?!

What are some of the worst prices you've ever seen?

At the same flea market at different stands on different days I found FFVII for $2 and I found RE3 for GC for $1.
On different days and stands from that I saw FFVII being sold as "mint" (opened, scuffs on case and book) for $35. Another guy had the gall to put a $40 sticker on RE3. When I told the RE3 guy I bought mine at the same flea market for $1, he said "we take trades, I'll give you $15 for it."

Having to step in here. Come a bit more south lad. In birmingham there is a retro game store in the yardley area. I forget the name, but it's by the swan roundabout and the guy who runs it is sound as fuck.

Sensible soccer on mega drive? £1. Gameboy konami collections? £4 each. Dude spent twenty minutes looking for an atari st compatible joystick I could give my brother for his birthday. Didn't find one, but did show me just how big a collection he has.

If you're ever down this way give him a visit. Has a great selection of mega drive stuff too. We got all the micro machines games off him at good prices.

There is another store about 20 minutes away from there. Bigger, with bright yellow sign. Again, I can't remember the name. Retro something. They're pretty bad tho. Snes for £50 that kind of thing. But they sell other stuff and they did have an atart st joystick so I guess they're not all that bad.

Actually, they really are pretty amoral business people. For a while they were even running a sort of smear campaign against other stores in the area that sold retro games (not just their direct competitors), complete with fake websites and fake Yelp reviews talking about horrible service and casually mentioning how they went to "some store in the mall" and got better service. Some of the shit got so bad that the owner of the place by my house took out a restraining order on the guy who owns the mall stores.

Actually as far as businesspeople go, they have shown themselves to be pretty amoral.
A few years back, were doing a sort of smear campaign against all other stores in the area that were carrying retro games (not just dedicated retro game stores), complete with fake websites and fake Yelp reviews that would talk about horrible service and prices, and then casually mention how they went to "some place in the mall" and got exactly what they wanted. There were also a few reports of employees from the downtown getting tailed by the mall store owner if they ever went to the mall.
It got so bad the that the owner of the downtown shop had to take out a restraining order on the mall guy.

I phrased it the way I did to avoid having to unnessisarily explain essentially boring and irrelevant side facts but I didn't expect you pricks to get so pissy. What's even the problem with telling people their prices are too high? So they can keep suckering people into paying outrageous prices for games that have no reason to cost more than $15? These guys pay bottom dollar for shit they rummage out of attics for $20 a box (of games) and sell them individually at prices that makes even amazon look like a reputable vendor of used games.

No, no. I'm talking in general.
I've never seen SMW anywhere over $15 (and that was CIB) anywhere in my town. Same goes with FFVII only being $20 at most.

But this weird fear that EVERYTHING is overpriced, the hatred of resellers, and arguments over what counts as "rare" in threads like these make it seem like people would prefer all retro video game anything to be dirt cheap.

>> No.1796256

>>1796232
I get you, but I've seen outrageous prices for both of those games at reseller shops or stands. We're complaining about those vendors specifically, which seem to be popping up more often than not.
The local used game store keeps SMW and SMB3 locked up for $35 a piece. Metal Gear (the NES one) is fucking $25 because of its name, despite being literal trash that nobody wants.
It's about weeding the good ones from the bad.
It's nice that you have good vendors in your area, but don't assume they're all like that. I've only ever seen one vendor that charged fair prices for the games that were in demand or just plain rare.
A game that sold like SMW deserves about $20, because it's still so sought after. Games with limited runs and cult acclaim obviously deserve higher tags.
I shouldn't have to shell out $30 to play a game like Donkey Kong Country on SNES.

Holy shit.

My story takes place in a game shop about an hour from here.

Walked in one day, "Excuse me, do you sell Playstation games?"
>Yeah we got a stack here, go ahead and look through.
I bought Croc, Boombots, and Bubsy 3D for about $15. Thanked him, left.

Went back a week later. There was a different guy working the counter.
"Excuse me, do you sell Super Nintendo games?"
>No.
"Oh, well do you still have those PlayStation games?"
>No.
"Okay then, I'll just get MGS 2."

What he neglected to tell me was they had an online eBay shop dedicated to retro games. For some reason, they don't sell them in the actual store. I mean come on, if I'm going to spend money on vidya, why would you make me go to the internet and do it? Fuck that.

i think it depends on where you live, but where I am, it's not TOO ridiculous yet, but about half the places have prices more than I'm willing to pay, even places like thrift shops and flea markets.

The local retro game shop has prices that are about 2 or 3 times what I'd be willing to pay, but he's been in business for a long time, so what the hell do I know. He also acts a lot like the comic book buy from The Simpsons.

There are a few places with decent prices, but all the good stuff seems to move really quickly.

>> No.1799263

Not a huge amount of stores that stock games for older systems where I live, but there's a few around. Most are fairly bit, or at least a bit iffy on prices or quality (I apologize in advance if not all of the examples are entirely /vr/ material, but it's been affecting more than just games up through fifth gen here, spilling over into sixth as well). Two that I know of are halfway decent for handheld stuff, but in most cases you're going to pay a LOT for older console games (stuff like SotN for $45, Koudelka for $45, etc). Also a Bookmans a few towns over that generally doesn't have all that good a selection, and tends to overcharge for the more worthwhile stuff (the place charges $40 for stuff like Eternal Darkness, Custom Robo, and even the occasional used strategy guide, even seen Koudelka there for even more than the other store, at $50). One used game store that has a habit of trashing another local store (one that is actually pretty good) simply because the store they're trashing is nearby and has been there longer; selection's decent but the prices tend to be pretty high and they put stickers on cart labels). Another smallish chain I know of out here is really inconsistent with prices; common or popular games tend to go for a good 2-3 times what they might at the best local store, like Metroid Prime 2 for nearly $30 as opposed to $11, while games from more niche genres like JRPGs go for a lot less than normal ($5 for Xenogears, $11 for Koudelka, about $10 for Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, $13 for Xenosaga Episode III, $18 for Wild Arms ACF, etc).

Only found one store that's consistently had good selection and good prices out here, and the employees are pretty damn nice, as well as both knowledgable and helpful. They tend to look at what a game goes for online, and dock at least a few bucks from the price (clear up to $20-30 for some of the more expensive games around, compared to the prices other stores have), and are even willing to price match.

>> No.1799291

>>1799263
To add on to this, the real issue is that I still can't find a place at all with all that decent of prices for SNES games; even that reasonable one down there is still a bit too high for my tastes, even if they are still at least a bit cheaper than most of the places out here, but I suppose that's an issue plaguing prices for the system's library on the whole, at least as far as worthwhile titles go. And not even that one inconsistent chain stocks actual games for the SNES; only sports ones (and in general the oldest system they stock actual games for is the PS1), so no luck getting an odd deal there.

>>1796173

>>1796259
I'm really not a fan of the local Bookmans. Especially after finding a scorpion in the case for a game I bought, but I suppose that's more of a personal issue than one regarding prices, selection, or quality.

>>1796404
To be fair with SFC Chrono Trigger (and I'm assuming you're being specific to the actual Japanese version), most places I know that take in Japanese imported games don't charge a lot for ones where you'd need to really know moon to get the most out of, like JRPGs, and as such won't give much for them either since the amount of local buyers for such things tends to be low. But offering a single cent is not something ANYWHERE out here would be liable to do.

>>1797154
I don't like most of the ones where I live, but the single good one is a great place to hang out, and if nothing much is going on, just browse, shoot the shit with the employees about video games, or try out some interesting games since they have a try it before you buy it thing with console games, as far as seeing if a game's something you like, or to just make sure it works.

Up to you. Personally I always check to see if a game has a manual before buying it, or if it at least might have a cheap manual I can buy for it online, unless said game is at some ridiculously low price and good condition, where passing it up, complete or not, would be foolish (especially if it's one I've been considering playing).

If it seems like a game where a manual would generally be really helpful, you might want to look online to see if anyone's scanned it (granted, not every game, especially harder to find ones, has seen a manual scan done). At least then you can try to play it before deciding whether to take it back or something.

But it's still one of a rather small group of PS2 games that are expensive these days, while most of the rest of the library remains pretty damn reasonable. True, prices have slowly been creeping up, but in general it didn't see the rather fast price hike most Gamecube games saw once Gamestop stopped stocking for them. And where I live Dark Cloud 1 only goes for about $10-15 in stores still, with the second being only $20 or so last I looked.

Not saying PS2 games aren't on the rise as far as prices go, just that they're still fairly reasonable and the time it's taking most to get up there is fairly slow. And I've noticed, at least where I live, that even if a game suddenly jumps in value online, it takes local stores a while to catch up. Like with Robot Alchemic Drive. Now goes for a good $50-60 used on Amazon, but I tend to still see it from time to time in local stores for about $18-25.

Will I ever be able to obtain a cheap NES / SNES / PS2 (not retro, I know...)?
Recently, I've been visiting many flea markets, and they sell each game ~3 - 5€ / 2.70 - 6.70 US$.
I'd buy the games if I had the fucking console, I just have a PC. I will never have a good retro console, because I just have bad experience with online stores and ebay.

Any of you guys know some good places to look in North Carolina?

I know about the Trade-It stores in eastern NC and their prices are usually better than anything I've been able to find elsewhere. Edward McKay's is priced pretty highly and even the flea market at the Raleigh fairgrounds have people charging way too much. There was this one guy there who tried selling me a NES with no cables or controllers for 50 bucks saying it would go for 160 on ebay. He was the only person there who had anything video game related besides the two resellers inside, which had even more ridiculous prices.

I don't know where you live, but here (Italy) you can find pretty easily PS2 on various sites (similar to local Craiglist) for 25€ and less. I suppose could be the same where you live. PS1s tend to be pretty cheap since both the PS2 and PS3 are backwards compatible with the games for it. Not saying that $10 for that isn't still decent, but it's something of a different issue compared to systems that can still go for $55-100, depending on which one and location.

>yardsales
Wish my local ones would have decent games. Only found one, maybe two that did. Most of them only have sports or movie games from my experiences.

>>1807117

There's a store I know of that throws in a copy of that for free with purchase of an NES from them since they have so many copies. Not sure why people started charging $25 or so for those.

As for the NES, SNES, and PS2 systems themselves they're not too bad where I live. I don't remember exactly how much an NES goes for at the cheapest local store, but the SNES goes for $55 in good shape there, with the PS2 being $40-50, depending on the model (whether that's a worthwhile price depends on the buyer I suppose, but the system does allow for PS1 backwards compatibility with most PS1 games as well, basically giving you access to two systems in one, though you will need a PS1 specific memory card for playing PS1 games on there). Mainly the worthwhile games in the library for the SNES being expensive wherever you go that makes it bit hard for me to pick up, while the NES and PS2 libraries tend to be pretty reasonable out here still, save for a small amount of games that are noteworthily expensive.

Yeah, it's always surprising to find an older game or system in excellent shape and at a reasonable, if not outright cheap price. Then you're both idiots.

Used games stores are going the way of the do-do.

Why would you knowingly cripple yourselves financially knowing someone is just going to fuck you over? Not to mention the faith you have in your local community.

There is no reason to have a storefront, with a lease, hiring employees, and all that garbage to sell retro games. Just open up an eBay account, or make a fucking website, and offer local pickup at your apartment. Seriously.

Everyone on /vr/ who dreams of opening up a retro video game store has no fucking idea. Why would you sell FF7 for 20 bucks in store when you can sell it for 40 bucks reliably online? There are people willing to pay that much you may as well turn extra profit for it, without the hassle of employees, display cases, shelving, a computer system to manage inventory, credit card and debit machines... etc.

There are so many things associated with a storefront its insane. You'd be better off selling online with a spreadsheet of your inventory, cost to acquire, item sold for, and your profits.

I've always entertained the idea of having a small game shop and price low, sell large quantity like the Japanese do, but every time I realize it's futile and that business model won't work here.

Businesses in America is too jew and no where near enough people take care of their shit for there to be such a large supply of good condition games that enable the low prices across the board like in nipland. As long as there's that condition disparity, and gaming is popular, resllers will always jew it up here and ruin it for the financially well-minded of us who enjoy retro video games. Disparity can't be remedied, and retro gaming being just a fad to pass is somewhat debatable.

Even selling on craigslist I worry my shit will just get flipped because of these fuckers. All I can do to avoid it is price high but right under retail (with haggling), accept trades (which only collectors will take the time to do), and mix my game lots with different genres of games that most people wouldn't typically buy together to identify potential resellers and high ball the fuck out of their low balls, that way their potential profits will be as little as possible.

>> No.1808276

>>1808162
Unfortunately, at the end of the day the main reason why prices are so high isn't because of the eeeevvviiil reseller scum (definitely A reason but not THE reason), but because there are people who are willing to pay for the stupid prices.

Like >>1808197 says if you try to be a saint and sell your games for a fair price, at best you will get a handful of people who actually like video games to walk home with a good game for a good price. But more often you will just get people who will exploit you.

Fair prices won't fix anything. The only thing that can fix this is if retards stop encouraging and enabling resellers to do what they do (unfortunately this will never happen).

There's one store out where I live that tends to have great selection, reasonable prices for most games (ranging from about $2-20 cheaper than other places, depending on how much a given game costs), and the employees generally seem to have a lot of fun working there and are generally knowledgable and helpful as well. They also do stuff like cheap disc cleaning/buffing ($2 or so, and they get a lot of business on that end since nowhere else out here really does that to my knowledge) and cartridge maintenance, and while I do think they might normally have a harder time staying open by charging less, they tend to get a lot of business for a place that stocks older games due to just generally being a nice store with lower prices, and have Monday's off (allowing them to remain open all weekend when business is highest, yet still take a break once a week and probably save on utilities). It doesn't seem like they have that big an issue staying open either, since in the last year or so they opened a third store and are now considering a fourth one.

I think they're only here in Arizona, though there's been some debate about where they plan to open a fourth store; think one of the locations being discussed is somewhere in California. Also seen people say they used to not be that good, but they've been my go-to store ever since the local Play'n'trade went under (shame, that store was pretty good and really damn close by as well) and I had to start doing some serious looking to find a another decent place for older games, since Gamestop drove most of them out of this area as they got bigger (another factor that probably helps them; they're in another part of town, and compared to down here where there seems to be a Gamestop every mile or so, there aren't nearly as many in those parts, with only two or so coming to mind). If they used to be bad, they've made an improvement since then. Seen far worse stores out here, both on the pricing and selection ends.

not an 80 for 40, but maybe 55 or 60. i mostly sell to people who collect because they will be happy to pay that fair price and have it in their collection rather then sell it on ebay for resellers to resell.

i wouldn't open a fucking store because I know my area, its small and while there are people who love games, someone already tried to have a store open. nice big store, owner was a douche and clearly in it for the money. he would always tell me about the stuff he got dirt cheap and then say "hey, you want this FF3 for 60?". Glad he isn't around anymore, he was killing my flea market buying up EVERYTHING gaming related. didn't matter if it was atari or xbox, he just grabbed it.

i don't get why people think atari stuff will sell, i had a hard time selling my system and near 100 games (one of which was a porn game) for $75. other shit like resellers, i don't know how they can think their shit will sell when its priced like pic related. and no, that isn't a typo, its $75 dollars in that fucking condition.

It's easy to take what the average sold price of a game is online, and calculate what you would make after shipping costs and fees are taken out. If that math is too complicated for you, I guess I can understand why you're bitching about how much retro games cost.

Well I just got around to checking it out itself, and I was wrong about one thing:
The optical drive is bad. And it's not the laser, I can't even try OUT the laser. The motor itself is screwed, and it won't spin even if I hold down to button inside the tray. So I guess I'm gonna have to put the cost of another optical drive and ten minutes of work into this after all, but it's not so bad.

Found a retro store in my country and asked a little about prices. The consoels they sell seem to be expensive but it's money I'd pay one way or anothe rfor Ebay shipping so it might be worth to buy some of the things they sell.

Super Famicom for 120 bucks and a Genesis for like 100 bucks. Gamecube for 170 which is pretty expensive. I'm thinking of either getting the Genesis or the SFC>

Honestly I haven't done much research on SFC prices, but when even Amazon has better prices, you know you're getting jewed, hard. I know that for an American SNES, even the scummiest of resellers don't go beyond $70.

Gamecubes seem to have gone up ridiculously in price recently, I don't know why. I remember a time when you would be openly mocked for selling any higher than $20, now I can't find one for under $30 console only. The bubble must be expanding.

In any case, I wouldn't be afraid to buy console only, AV cables + AC adapter shouldn't run for more than $10 total. The biggest problem will be official GCN controllers which can go for $20-$30. In any case you definitely should not shell out triple figures for a Gamecube

I don't actually own Tron Bonne or PDS yet, so those I would keep. And likely, I wouldn't sell it at my shop not simply because greed, but because nobody would buy it. I probably would set it at 60, though. There's fair, and then there's dumb. PDS for example regularly sells for over $300. Likely I'd put it out for a day at $200 - $250, see the lack of interest, then sell it online because nobody goes to the flea market with that kind of cash. Maybe if I had a physical storefront and I want worried about paying my bills for the month I'd let it sir in a case for a while.

>>1808901
Ask, I've not had once person lie to me yet, they pretty much all admit it. If they don't, you can also tell by the way they try to haggle, and what they go after. Collectors generally go after legitimately rare games, players want stuff they played as a kid, and shitty resellers want to grab everything they see with Mario or Zelda, then try to get you to mark it down 75%. If someone asks you for "your marios," they're 99% of the time a reseller. Live in suburban California, and have to drive about an hour to get to any place selling older games. There's one store with tidy store and an okay selection, but their RPGs and big name titles are always way overpriced. Earthbound complete for 1000, Lunar Silver Star complete for 150, Koudelka complete for 80, Warriors of the Eternal Sun cart-only for 33.

On the other hand, there is a store that is not so tidy in a kinda shitty part of town. Their prices are pretty good, and they will throw in a twenty percent discount on total purchases if they randomly feel like it. They also have this giant backroom full of unsorted old games which they may or may not let customers into, depending on who's working, and their mood. Place is dirty as fuck though.

My local Goodwills (and Savers) have fucking nothing worth buying as far as video games go. Not sure if people out here have bad taste in games, or simply refuse to donate actual worthwhile games to them, or if there's just scalpers that make daily rounds picking up whatever decent game they can find at them for the purpose of resell. I don't trust ordering online from them either. Not exactly retro, but I once saw an Amazon Goodwill account selling Shadow Hearts Covenent for about half the price it usually is. Asked the seller if it was complete and in good shape. They responded that it was complete, but dodged the question about condition. I figured that I could take the risk on it and if anything else, it might be a learning experience since I had not ordered from Goodwill before. Turns out the cover art, case, and manual were pretty damn beat/torn up, with only the discs being in decent shape. Haven't ordered anything from one of their Amazon accounts since (and thankfully was able to find someone selling a much better condition cover and manual).

That is way too much for systems if you ask me. Especially the Gamecube, which has been a case of the game library and some of the peripherals going up in price, but not the system itself where I live. System should only b about $25-30, at least by my local prices out here. Granted, if you live elsewhere, I don't know exactly how much those amounts translate to in US dollars, but that still seems outrageous.

Wow. You know, the least they could have one was waited until you weren't in the store anymore.

On that note, most stores out here tend to be understanding about the desire to have a complete copy of a game, especially an older one where you might need the manual if possible. Not everywhere operates off the typical Gamestop-style logic of "it's the disc itself you want. Why does the case and manual matter?" And even the bad stores out here don't make insinuations like those two people you found do.

I wouldn't say Zia's always shit, as their inconsistent prices can mean the occasional really good deal if they get something good in that doesn't get hit with scalper prices the way some of the games they tend to get in are. But more often than not their selection, especially of /vr/ related games, tends to be pretty bad. The one closest to me only really seems to stock for the PS1, with Dreamcast having the next highest amount as far as retro games go. SNES, NES, and N64 barely have anything worth picking up when I've been there; all mainly just sports games. And the one time I did see some decent stuff for those (Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie with the carts in great shape for $15 each), I didn't really have the spending money for them.

Not Tuscon, but Chandler. There's nothing dedicated to older used games in Chandler itself (the amount of Gamestops drove pretty much any place that doesn't do multimedia, like Zia, out), but there's some options in the surrounding parts like Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert. Not all of them are that good though. Best one I personally know of is Fallout Games, which I've mentioned earlier in the thread.

There's also a few other stores in Tempe besides them, but they tend to be hit or miss, and one of them apparently has been leaving fake Yelp reviews about Fallout treating customers poorly (I go to Fallout pretty often and they never seem to treat people poorly; they've been pretty damn good since I've started going there), since both stores are fairly close. Bookmans in Mesa is also hit or miss. I've found some decent stuff there that I've been looking for from time to time, but they generally don't have what I'm looking for, or charge too much (not exactly /vr/, but I'm not inclined to pay $40 for a Gamecube game I can get for a good $15-20 cheaper at Fallout), or the gams simply aren't in the best shape. Also the scorpion thing, but that's more of a personal reason I don't like them much.Gilbert has one store I know of, but they tend to charge WAY too much for games I'm interested in, at least from what I've seen. Still, you can find the occasional good deal there. Found a cart only copy of Aria of Sorrow (not /vr/, just using as an example) in excellent shape for a mere $12 when it goes for $25-30 cart only elsewhere out here.

Going to have to continue in a second post.

As stated earlier, Fallout has two other stores, and the Tempe store can get shipments from the Phoenix one, so if there's something you're looking for that they don't have, they're more than willing to call up another store and ship it to whichever is closest (the Paradise Valley one still can't ship out though, as that one needs to get some more business and people knowing about it since it's the most recently opened one). Also, while cheaper than pretty much everywhere else I've seen out here, games for certain systems like the SNES and Gamecube are still a bit high, so just don't be going there expecting stuff to be too low.

And yeah, I think the whole deal with that other store trashing Fallout is a bit sad. As far as I know, Fallout's been there longer and is generally on good terms with the other stores out here (in the since that if not one of their stores is carrying something, they will recommend some other local stores as options if one is not willing to keep checking back for a game/system), except that one due to the yelp review thing (they're pretty damn certain it was that other store doing the reviews since those only started cropping up immediately after that one opened; makes me wonder if they do that to another relatively close one down there as well, or if they just focused it at Fallout, and thankfully I don't think it's impacted Fallout's business too much).

And cool. If this thread isn't still up on Wednesday, just wait until a new one shows up to mention if Metrognome is decent.

Lowest general price I see for FFVII is about $35, ranging all the way up to $50 at other stores here. Outright cheapest I've seen it for was $12 at a Zia Records (most of the PS1 Final Fantasy games seem cheap as hell there from my past experiences), but it was admittedly kind of faded and the plastic on the back was turning brownish or something.

Same thing at a yardsale the other day, woman wants 80 euros for a fat PS2 telling me "you know, there are some people collecting videogames and they are paying 300 euros to get a PS2, I could totally sell it for that price on the internet"
What's wrong with people and old vidya? more and more think that "retro" = rare or/and expensive.

The worst part is when you see only sports games at stands, people telling that the other ones have already been sold to that guy with the video game stand.
You go to his stand there are plenty of old systems, cartridges and cds dying under the sun cause the guy is too stupid to protect them. That same guy also labels games as SM/DH as "rare" and puts a 20euro sticker on it.

The only way I can get into retro gaming is emulation, exclusively.

To get some retro stuff, I need to track down a particular person to buy his stuff, asking here and there...

That's why my collection ascend to 12 PS2 games, a PS2, a DSi Xl, a flashcard for the DSi and 3 original Disney Games.

A lot of places seem to feel that once Gamestop or whatever the big name local video game retailer stops stocking something, it's suddenly old and retro and they can charge what they want. That said, where I live, the PS2 hasn't been hit too hard with that, be it the system or library itself (apart from a few games that has shot up from reduced availability). Mainly the Gamecube that's been suffering from it lately, as far as more recent systems go.

>>1813087
Gamecube games, especially those from Nintendo held series (as well as a few third party ones such as Gotcha Force) go for a lot these days, ever since Gamestop stopped carrying them. Where I live in the US, the price for Twilight Princess (which is what I'm going to assume you're specifically mentioning, is nearly at, if not directly at the same price it was new when it came out for a used copy, complete or not.

>>1813109
That N64 actually sounds like a decent deal compared to what I've been seeing for them lately (depending on the color, they've been up to $100 even for non limited edition ones). The rest of those prices don't sound that good though (of course, I'm not sure how much those local prices out where you live translate into US currency, but still).

>>1813113
Wow. Out at one of my local stores, depending on the game's condition and how many copies they already have, you can expect to probably make a good 25-35% of what they sell it for if the conditions are right if you want cash, more so if you want store credit. That said, I don't trade in or sell games too often, but it's nice for if you do. None of that "we'll give you 10% in cash, best we can do" shit.

I tend to try to buy complete copies myself, at least as far as actually cased games go (such as the PS1), since people tend to be more inclined to keep everything together with those compared to cartridge based games that came in boxes (which tend to be a lot more expensive complete by virtue of boxes being easier to squash, and people just typically not keeping them around), and if I'm buying a cased game incomplete, it had better have a manual available for purchase cheap online, or be at some ridiculously low price that passing it up would be downright foolish. That said, there's a limit as to how much one should pay for a manual, and mine's usually $5 or so, especially if it's at or less than the difference between what I paid for an incomplete copy compared to how much complete ones go for.

Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them. If you're only willing to pay 5 dollars for Mario 64, but everyone else is willing to pay 30, then you're just entitled for wanting it your way only.

People are bitching all the time that retro games should be cheap. But honestly, the carts and discs themselves are more rare now then ever. Do you think about buying a new release for 360/ps3/wii or wii-u/xboxone/ps4 for 60 bucks? No. But somehow because its older its not worth 60 bucks anymore?

The amount of games that got ruined, or otherwise lost to the ages is massive, even despite big print runs. If you don't wanna pay the prices, get a flash cart or use emulators. The closest half price books to where I live has a pretty small selection of video games still, but as far as /vr/ stuff they have jack shit, apart from maybe a few computer games here and there. And even then, their over selection's been pretty bad when I've stopped in, even for the Gamecube, PS2, or DS (which they have the most games for). I have found a few GBA games I'd been looking for and had been having trouble finding elsewhere locally, but prices were about par for the course. Think they were charging about what you'd expect to pay online for a copy, AND they had he shipping factored into their prices. Makes me think the "half price" in their name only applies to the books they stock like the name suggests, but then again, since most of the ones out here closed down, I rarely go to them, since the closest one is really out of the way to get to, so I really have't had that much experience with this particular store.

There's actually a few places like that, not as far as the library idea but as far as letting customers test out or play games for a while. One store down here lets you do that in order to see if the game works, or if it's the sort of game you'd enjoy. Another one out here functions a bit as a console arcade, charging people that want to do stuff (I'm guessing either the base cost to get in is highish, or they charge by the hour) in order to play long bouts of Smash Bros, Street Fighter, and such.

I think it would be A PROBLEM but not a major enough one that'd keep the whole concept from not working. I don't see theft making libraries shut down. Bay Area people, where do you go? Half Price Books in the East Bay is decent - $50 for most consoles. I've seen consoles like SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast, Playstation, 2600, Wii, etc. all priced around that mark. Games vary - their pricing on modern games is a bit higher than I'd like, but they have boxes of Atari commons for like 20 games for 5 bucks, which isn't bad. Games hover between 5 and 30 bucks depending on rarity, but they never have a spectacular game selection. I probably won't go to Phoenix Games in Concord again, green label FFVII for $45 was among the many 'bargains' I found. After seeing it on Game Center CX, I've been meaning to hit 4Jays in Antioch, but it hasn't happened yet.

I fucking hate living in Mexico.
Good yard sales are downright hard to find and even then, they are stalked by resellers.
Flea markets are filled by people who think they are sitting on gold in a disk/cart.
Super Mario 64? 30 bucks. Zelda OoT? 35 bucks? Smash? 45 bucks? Zelda MM? 50 bucks. MGS GH Version? That's 60 fucking bucks.
And every single one of them is cart only or disc only, in a beat up condition no less.
Buying consoles is also a nightmare. If you want an older console like an NES or SNES, you'll have to pay 50 bucks for a beat up console, with 2 third party controllers or 1st party controllers in terrible shape.
Because we don't have a craiglist, most people use facebook, and holy shit, fuck buying on facebook.
Most sellers omit prices and when asked, they respond with 'inbox" so you don't call them out or get scared.
Reseller suck buy anything cheap and then sell it for twice the profit.
The only way to get decent prices is with a guy in the flea market who sells current video games and older ones. Got Shadow of the colossus, Zone of the enders, MGS The twin snakes and PM TTYD for 40 dlls, only PM was missing the manual.
Never ever deal with mexicans /vr/

The SNES is honestly a system I'd love to get (as well as build up a nice personal library of games to support it) but I entirely agree. I don't want to become part of the justification that people are fine paying out the ass for even common titles on the system, just because they're SNES games. Until prices lower (or perhaps, IF they lower) I'll stick with emulating and work on building a decent collection of enjoyable games for other systems I have access to, like the PS1, which generally tend to be a fair bit more reasonable where I live.

Are these bad prices?
The only copy I've seen of the Original Nes SMB went for about $60 in Gametraders.
Fucking Australia, man.

Holy shit. I work at a retro store in NJ and the prices for Mario are $10 more than we charge. Hell, we give away a copy of SMB/DH into every NES we sell.

Digital Press in Clifton! Our selection varies, honestly, because the good stuff tends to go quickly. We try to price fairly, and try to do our research on prices for anything we don't feel comfortable on. Let me know if you've got any questions about the place.

Damn. You can get an NTSC one where I live in the states for about $30, and have the store makes sure it works (they usually do so when they take the systems in, but it never hurts to confirm).
>"dreamcast base unit, price unknown"
How does that even work? I mean, the least they could do is say "make me an offer" or something. "Price Unknown" makes it sound like some sort of one-of-a-kind thing they'd have to get appraised by a professional or something.

I've generally avoided Facebook (and other social networking groups) so I'm not entirely sure what that means; do they try to have you essentially email/private message them about their prices (which I am guessing turn out to be outrageously high) and they're just trying to avoid other potential buyers seeing a debate over such things in a general public discussion and being discouraged from buying stuff or something?

Stop baiting USAfags to send you games and consoles. The shipping is so god damn high that you're better off buying them for those prices, you'll even save some money.

$40 for a Dreamcast+$40 (I'm not joking) shipping to Europe = $80+VAT tax or what the fuck ever.

There is no winning. Don't feel bad for these people, you can't do shit about it. I've tried.

Then why bother listing it off if they don't have a copy for sale yet? Do they just list off stuff local stores have without listing a price, and if there's any demand, go buy and mark them up? Because I honestly haven't heard of people that operate like that, at least where I live.

Not retro

Just told a classified guy to fuck off when he tried selling me Midnight Club 2 PS2 for $20. I told him a retro game store right at his own intersection sells games for $2-$5. Fuck these people who post on classifieds and think their games are so valuable.

To be honest, unless it's an RPG, a shortprinted game, or one that's just that damn well made (think I've seen some really high prices for one of the DBZ games on the system, but I've heard that one is notoriously great, and as such the demand has been fairly high), $20 or more for a PS2 game is a bit too much. Especially if it's something that sold pretty damn well, got a big print, and goes for a lot less at other nearby places.

Reminds me of something I saw recently myself. Not /vr/, but one store out here was wanting $20 for a copy of Rune Factory on the DS, while another store (one I really prefer to use) had it in better condition for $6 (the game also seems to go really cheap even for new copies online as well, leading me to believe that first store's just trying to milk the idea that "DS RPGs are worth gold" the way they have with Dragon Quest IV and V, and probably a few others). Not even sure where they pulled the $20 used price from.

Not sure what the case has been over there where you are, but where I live Gamestop is extremely prone to driving anywhere else that specializes in games out of business, to the point stores that actually stock sixth gen and below can only really be found in the surrounding towns, where there are less Gamestops to deal with. This also allows a lot of these stores to charge what they want since there's only a few local places to go to get older games these days. And then there's the issue of various stores putting out fake yelp reviews in an effort to either steal customers. Only one really good /vr/ related store out here left, and thankfully their customer-base is solid enough that stuff like fake yelp reviews don't do much. The other good local ones have since gone under.

Gorilla Games is a franchise similar to Play-n-Trade, for people who want to run videogame stores but don't want to be a Gamestop manager.

There's another Gorilla Games in Mandarin in Jax on San Jose real close to where I used to live. Used to bike to it all the time and check their selection for good stuff. Eventually their stock got stale and they started checking ebay for prices.

They seem like they're doing well. The store is awesome, a lot of locally owned game stores and chains are very stiff, you aren't really comfortable to hang out there or chat with people, but VGR feels like somebody's basement. It's a fun place to just go hang out and talk about games.
