What Quake/UT style multiplayer shooters are there that still have people actively playing? I know about Quake Live, but I think that technically does not qualify as retro.

Why not? It's still a 15 year old game, and the only arena shooter with a reasonably active community, this won't change excluding the upcoming games (UT4, 2GD's Reborn, Reflex maybe)

Quake Live is your only option for a game that is still 'active' but even then there isn't that many people playing. When it comes out on steam soon that should help bring in some more people.

Reborn looks like it will be really cool but I don't have a dx-11 card to check out the alpha. (also not retro, sorry)

Quake Live and Sauerbraten are the only two internationally surviving arena shooters. Smaller ones like Warsaw or Xonotic or whatever have their own little communities in America or Europe or whatever but only QL and Sauerbraten get played internationally. QL because it's Quake and Sauerbraten because almost everything is calculated clientside so you can comfortably play with 200 ping or more. The low system requirements and easy mapmaking system probably tie into it a lot too.
Unfortunately Sauerbraten is a pretty shitty game, but if you want an arena shooter besides QL and don't happen to be around the small communities that play whichever other one, it's probably your only option.
