This thing is garbage. The d-pad is too stiff, it's noticeably harder to do diagonals and there is no good reason for the little screw in joystick. Did anyone enjoy and actively use this thing? It's the peripheral equivalent of "One Must Fall".

Did Gravis just pay off gaming rags to support this thing? Can someone recommend me a comfy plug n play serial port gamepad for DOS games?

Weren't the threads in the d-pad meant for a joystick?

Either way, the pad still sucks. Ruined my 90's emulation experience.

Nobody used pads on PC. Steering wheels for racing, joysticks for flight sims, but even the most hectic hotseat multiplayer action games were played by all players hunching over the keyboard.

I firmly believe no one in this thread either used a Gravis gamepad in the 80s, when it was a godsend, or recently when it would require either a retro PC or Mac or CDi.

You're not AVGN nobody thinks it's funny when you ridicule an iconic piece of gaming history.

Probably, so people could use it in conjunction with Gravis Ultrasound

Including it on a sound card probably solved issues with not having anywhere to put it seeing that people actually used Serial and Parallel ports back then.

My dad touted this thing like a motherfucker. I thought it was okay when I was a kid but gamepad support back in the day was horse shit.

Years later I came into a PS1 controller-like USB version with the same sort of d-pad and attachable joystick. I was far less forgiving this time. Awful.

Gaming AND computing magazines hyped the fuck out of Intel's MMX processor. I managed to nag my dad to upgrade our computer to a Gateway 2000 with MMX in '97.

It was obsolete by the end of the year when Pentium 2 was announced.

Ok, I can understand the screwhole on the older gravis gamepad, but here with the handle, using a joystikc must be horrible. I never tried it though.

Anyway, why not use a modern controller and emulate an old ass controller? Somthing like the PS4 controller of the Wii U pro controller are pretty ace for old 2D games.

They don't have the retro flavor, but they have great dpad and buttons.

Anyway, here was my controller during the 90s, I used it mainly to play consoles games on emulator, good times. It's named Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad and it rocks.

I had (actually still have) the more stripped down version of this. I actually wanted the one on your post, but I was poor and had barely scrounged up enough to get this one. I used it for emulation as well, but as you can see, it only has four face buttons plus two triggers on the back, so I had to map Start and Select on the keyboard. And yes, the D-pad was shit.

Later on I just got a PS2 to USB adapter, and used my PS2 controller for emulation and Maple Story for many years. In fact, I'm still using the very same adapter even now.

Lots of sound cards had game ports built-in, because they commonly were bought together anyway.

In the _really_ old days, you often found separate Kraft Gameport cards. This is what I had in my first PC clone.

The USB ones WORK, which is cool. I had this pile of shit and it was damn near impossible to make the awful drivers work consistently. There were a million different incompatible standards for sending serial data back on the gameport, and this used its own special flavor of nonsense. Also I always wanted the GRiP multiport and could never find one.

PC gamers recently don't appreciate how fucking horrible it was trying to get one good gamepad - let alone 4 - on your machine back then. When the original Xbox launched (well, when it launched in Japan) with a half-decent USB gamepad, everything changed.

I always liked my Gravis as a kid. Then again, I don't think I realized there were alternatives available. It was the only PC gamepad I was aware of.

Mostly just used it to play stuff on NESticle. Few PC games had native gamepad support or controlled like ass with them. Not a lot you can do with a dpad and four buttons except play NES games.
