I actually just finished my Oblige game using mostly dual uzis after around the halfway point. Ammo isn't that hard to come by, summoning a backpack of ammo is one of the only skills you can use with no Energy investment, and you can buy it pretty cheaply at the shop.

I had a Sniper-modded High Power Handcannon for making long-distance pickoffs and a Plasma Handcannon for mid-range. Then Uzis shred the face off of anything I can approach in a normal sized area.

I get the feeling the shotgun sound was only intentional for the Spiderdemon, since it was meant to be a Super Chaingun (it fires 3 pellets per shot instead of 1).

Think the Chaingunner only kept it because they realised the pistol sound would give away that he fires slower than the actual chaingun.

As a mapper, I'm going to point out that this might be the case in the default game, but IS NOT necessarily the case in user maps.

Case in point, the map I'm working on now gives you a chaingun in the introductory area if you're on the first two difficulties, but a shotgun in UV. In another map, you get a shotgun on those difficulties but only a clip in UV (there's a shotgunner nearby instead). In another map, I have some chaingunners in UV but they're Demons in lower difficulties. You can also do it with decorations or any Thing that you place. (E1M3 in Doom 1 has a great case of this where there's a light to guide you out of the blue key room on the easier difficulties but it's gone in UV.)

Someone mentioned blocking out areas on different difficulties, and while I think that's a shitty thing to do (reminds me of Bubble Bobble fucking you over on the ending) the easiest way I can think of is to put a key area and then make the key only on UV. Again, this would be a shitty thing to do and most players would criticise you.

Since this entire discussion spawned from Cheesewheel's maps: I just looked in Map02 (the map I originally posted bitching about) and did not see a single monster that wasn't tagged for all difficulties. So the "just play on easier difficulties" complaint is entirely moot, it would only give me slightly more health and ammo, which isn't going to help me fight off 50 Revenants and pinkies.

You can say all you want that us whiny shitty players shouldn't chime in with our opinions, but frankly, fuck you. I like to engage in smaller encounters that actually seem like they're thought out instead of copypasting skeletons 30 times.

Has anyone asked Carmack if that's a quote he still stands by? I feel that it's a statement that doesn't quite ring as true these days, depending on the genre and play style, as well as the tone and setting of the game.

Okay. When I make a NEW sector in the map and texture it, etc., it shows up fine, but trying to fuck with any of the existing sectors just messes it up

So here's my question: Are you the same anon who was trying to align his teleporter flats? Did you just open up the map in UDMF instead of Doom 2? Because I've never done that but I'm pretty sure that can totally fuck with shit.

If you have an older version of the map that's still vanilla, I would go back and use that, and just work around the flats not being able to be aligned, or at least run that through a converter (I don't know where one is, but try the ZDoom forums) before you open it in UDMF again

Otherwise the only course of action I can see is rebuilding the entire map from scratch in UDMF. Thankfully you don't have a lot done already so you're not being set back too much.

(PS. don't make that dungeon area entirely dark, that's fucking shitty, light it at like 108 or something, or give the player a lightamp goggles)

i don't count that as HOM. it's just an intentionally missing texture to make the flat bleed over the hole in the floor.

HOM is where you see a shimmery effect in vanilla because there's nothing being drawn to the framebuffer and you see what was in there in memory before.

ZDoom will automatically load the last save upon death. If you want to pistol start upon death, then you need to disable autosaves and never save. If you save, ZDoom will load that save when you die. Short list of changes:
-Made level boundaries impassible (I assume this is a fuckup from the UDMF conversion)
-Fixed all HOM on sectors by literally redrawing them (you're welcome)
-Deleted stairs section since I didn't want to fuck with it; you can redraw it yourself
-Changed a few of the textures/added a little detail around the blood fall fountain thing (keep these or delete at your leisure)
-Realigned library room
-Changed the weird lift into a door like it should be in the first place
-Made the other door use the red key and put red key border textures around it, because you clearly intended to make it a key door
-Inset the door on the other end in the library so it actually looks good
-Texture alignment in the main room--don't fuck with this, it's perfect

Things I didn't fix:
-None of the items or enemies have any skill definitions, and as such don't appear when you play the game
-There's no red key (obviously you didn't get to that part yet)
-IMO I really don't like it when the player starts randomly in the "middle" of a level, where there isn't a door that the player can't enter that looks like they could have "come" from there. The only time this is really acceptable is depending on how the last map ended; if it ended on a teleport or something then it doesn't matter

It's been a long time since I worked with UDMF or Hexen in Doom and god damn does it look fucking complicated as shit; I'm sure some welcome the added flexibility but it's fucking intimidating working on walls and sectors and shit with so many tick boxes. I would seriously consider scrapping this and redoing it in vanilla

A lot of consideration goes into the timing and spacing of the spawns, plus the weapons available and space to maneuver/herd enemies, timing of invulnerabilities (if any), etc. I am always careful to have a little humility and not judge something as "isn't thought out" when it might be simply too hard for me (or you). Pretty much this. I just installed Brutal Doom not too long ago and while the flip-off is cringeworthy most of it wouldn't have been too out of place in the original. I was expecting much worse, more like EXTREEM on everything, but it was more like the original game with more oomph behind the already-present gore effects. Even the rip and tear stuff was fun in an outrageous testosterone fantasy kind of way, and obviously it has precedent.

I kind of feel though that Doomguy isn't that sadistic kind of person, though. He's more of a straight arrow than, say, Duke Nukem. A knight in shining blue armour piercing through the gloom and doom.

This. When Romero said about Brutal Doom, "if Doom was like this on release, we would have killed the gaming industry," I think he meant it in the sense that Doom was already so edgy and incredibly violent that it barely avoided causing mass censorship of the gaming industry after a long fight against that (which ended with the age rating system we have now). If it was Brutal Doom levels of violence, it would have caused an even bigger knee jerk reaction against video games and the industry would have never evolved beyond "toys for children."

Personally, I prefer Brutal Doom to vanilla Doom, but I distinctly remember how disgusted my parents visibly became when they saw me playing Doom 1 as a child and they immediately hid it away from me. They said the same things about Doom that people today are saying about Brutal Doom, they saw it as torture porn and disgusting levels of violence.

Of course, vanilla Doom feels tame today now that we've been desensitized by all the violent FPS games that came after it, but at the time it was seen as ridiculously over-the-top violent and I felt guilty playing it. For me, Brutal Doom brings Doom back to that level, except I don't feel guilty about it anymore because I'm an adult and have argued for so long about how video game violence has no effect on a person's psychology.

I just want to bring the perspective of someone who didn't grow up with Doom, but still thoroughly enjoy it.

It's interesting how everyone sees it as a horror game, because to a certain degree it is. You spend your time conserving health and ammo, looking for new weapons, and carefully considering whether you're in for an ambush or not. Your fear came from the gameplay itself, but I did not see it as a horror game.

I saw it as an over-the-top fast-paced shooter with excellent level design and actually demanded you to dodge and shoot at the same time. We don't get this very often anymore and it's a shame.

Call me a heretic, but I like Brutal Doom; it added some more interesting AI, it brought some of the RIP AND TEAR that was in the comics, and it made some nice visuals. The only thing I didn't like about it was replacing the pistol with a rifle, how jumping broke some maps, iron sights, and reloading.

If Sergeant_Mark_IV would just fix these issues I would be satisfied.

I don't think it was a bad idea, it was just delivered really poorly. Wouldn't want to recreated it as a standardized boss fight or anything.

If it moved a bit and shook the screen now and then. If it had appendage-like things that made the monster look like more than just a wall in a room.

If you had to approach it from a long distance (visibly!) while it sent out massive waves of NON HITSCANNING enemies that you have to cut your path through just to GET to the space where you can even begin to stop it (obviously with a much slower spawn rate than when you were far off so that you can actually get something done).

Do you mean that in the sense of "games as art", or "wider demographics"?

Because if the former, we're still not quite there yet. By and large, games are still seen as banal entertainment rather than anything potentially "enriching".
And if the latter, it's not like the current state of "Let's ruin everything trying to be Hollywood" is any better.

I never understood the "if you don't like it, don't use it/remove it" argument in regards to Brutal Doom's flaws. It's just as flimsy as the "if you don't like it, don't read it" or "if you don't like it, don't play it" argument. Yes, technically I don't have to watch it/don't have to read it/don't have to use it, and thank God for that, but that doesn't suddenly invalidate the reason.

Sure, you can use an external add-on to remove a feature that the mod sells itself on, but it still exists, was still designed around it, and etc, etc. Besides, if your suggestion to someone who doesn't like the Brutal Doom features is to remove them, then...
...well, that doesn't really speak well about them, does it?

I agree emphatically.
In the end that's a strength of Doom, the fact that people can just go through (without exaggeration) millions of mods and pick and choose things to their own benefit. If someone wants something brutal, well, there's Brutal Doom. If someone wants something not-brutal, there's an endless supply of alternatives.

I'm just kind of baffled at the idea that people who don't like Brutal Doom for x, y, and z, are essentially told to continue with Brutal Doom but with some extra mods that remove x/y/z.
I don't like the reloading and cruelty bonuseUSE THE MOD THAT REMOVES THEMokay? I'm still not interested and that doesn't change how it seems the extra attacks/damage of the monsters is offsetted against recovering your health throuTHEN WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT OPTIONAL FEATURESgod dammit.

If someone doesn't like a mod that's completely optional you can tell them that they don't have to use it.

It's a mod.

If they are playing it and don't like what they see as flaws but still wish to play it, they can edit it until it becomes the thing they want.

The nice thing about mods for Doom is that you can change it.

If you're complaining about what BD is like as is, then do something about it nigga.
You can do that.

The whole reason people deflect with "Don't like it? Don't use it" is because the actual arguing is tired and repetitive. Everyone knows the flaws.

Playing "Thy Flesh Consumed" for my first time.

Holy shit, the difficult ramped up an insane amount. Why is this so much harder than the other episodes? It's also very weird to me that it requires using unconventional gameplay mechanics like "running" over gaps, it feels like a collection of fan maps.

Is it fan maps or what? I'm playing Ultimate Doom, so did they add a bunch of fan maps?

Help!

I'm on E4M6 of Ultimate Doom and I can't get past the cyber demon. Even if I dodge his rockets I get splattered by the splash damage. Or I can jump into the lava pit to give myself more space to dodge without getting hit by the splash damage, but I already consumed the environmental suit so I burn to death if I jump in there.

Holy Christ this is ridiculous.

Honestly just Oblige on default setting for Doom II (with Mostly Tech as location because you have taste) will produce an ideal full-game for a campaign of RLARPG. Play it on Ultra-Violence. Starts off slow but eventually becomes really dangerous, with the last few levels being huge and containing around 3 Spider Masterminds and a couple Cyberdemons at points. And you WILL be powerful enough for those to be appropriate.

So I downloaded the Doom RPG, and it says you can use the RL Arsenal and monsters.

But Doom RPG says it can only use GZDoom and RL Monsters says it can only use the dev build ZDoom. I'm looking through the forums and can't seem to find a work around yet.

Has anyone managed to get all three to work together?
