Have you ever beaten Super Mario Bros without using warps/cheating/1-up trick?

If so, what is your opinion of the full game?

Yes.
>If so, what is your opinion of the full game?
Good, but it repeats too many stages. Lost Levels is better.

Worlds 1-6 are piss easy

7 + 8 are literally (not figuratively) from hell.

I did when I was a kid somehow. I'll agree with the anon above me, it starts out pretty easy, but near the end it gets hard as fuck.

Does the continue code count as cheating?

It's a good game, but all of the complaints in this thread either express or implied are fixed in Vs Super Mario Brothers. I suggest you all play it.

Warp Zones complicated (backward warp zones are not uncommon)
Repetitious level design eliminated ("Lost Levels" brought in in place of later, repeated levels)
Difficulty curve straightened out (Original later, harder repeated versions of early levels replace earlier easy-mode versions)
1-Up tricks mostly eliminated

I recommend it.

what are you talking about? I guess 7-1 could give you some trouble if you're a complete SMB noob, but 7-2 and 7-3 are just slightly harder versions of 2-2 and 2-3. and 7-4 is a complete cake walk.

Absolutely, and I'm shocked that so many people haven't. I hardly ever use warps when I play, so worlds 7-8 are very easy for me now. And I'm someone who's always been pretty shitty at games.

My opinion? Its one of the greatest games of all time even to this day. Impeccable controls, charming aesthetic, and a profound sense of mystery and enchantment.

in every game? no. in SMB? yes. especially considering the fact that the game is fairly generous with extra lives

Also, if you've only played "Lost Levels" you should be aware that the physics are all fucked up in that game (and the All-Stars version of SMB1 as well, which you should have noticed immediately).

Supposedly it's easier but not to me, though I think OG SMB physics are burned into my brain. It's also kind of a bitch to get a copy of SMB2J to play since it's officially a FDS exclusive. You gotta either get an FDS/Twin Fami etc or you gotta have an Everdrive or you gotta get a bootleg Famicom cart and play with your converter. I want to do that but I still haven't encountered a cheap SMB2 pirate Fami cart. I'd be satisfied if I just had a multicart with it but I don't yet.

IIRC the only differcence to warp zones in Vs, is the warp in 4-2 only allows you to warp to world 6, instead of 6,7,or 8

I still can't believe 2/Lost Levels never got a re-release on cart.

Yes I have. A lot of times actually.

Favorite worlds are 3 and 6 because of the night theme and my least favorite world is 7. I'm pretty sure that has a water stage and a 'follow the sequence' castle.

I'm also very fond of 4-3 because of the giant mushrooms. I used to have a problem with world 8; it seemed to run on too long but I wasn't dashing to be careful. Most forgettable world is 5 - Nothing about it stands out aside from the silver pipes during the day time.

Like many retro games (especially platformers) they were harder when I was younger but as I practiced and learned more tricks I got better with age. It takes about 16-20 minutes to play straight through, so its easy to practice repeatedly.

Clunky and outdated.

You'll have to inform me how they are fucked up. The only difference I notice is when playing as Luigi (floaty jump and slides a lot) but I never really picked up on other differences.

I've only every beaten the entire game Lost Levels once though

why do you consider that an accomplishment? it's one of the easiest games on the system.

Way too long.

Unlike SMB3 there isn't much variety for so many stages.

Yes, and my opinion is that it is still one of the finest video games ever made, simply based on the fact that I enjoy playing it so fucking much.

One thing this Mario game has over the others is what an amazing feeling grabbing a power up is when you're down on your luck. Especially in the harder later levels when they become scarce. When you get a Mushroom you make sure you hold onto it to the best of your ability.

From Mario 3 onward they just continuously shove your face in a constant stream of power ups. Losing a mushroom to me means nothing in later Mario games. There's no cringe or remorse when I ram my face into enemies. They're overly abundant in every stage. Not to mention the reserve system put into place. You're almost sure to never be base Mario for long.

beautiful game, still perfectly playable today. it's the Doom of platformers as far as I'm concerned. The granddaddy.
