Good retro games where the setting is mostly dark, gloomy, or otherwise overnight?

Looking for games with this type of atmosphere. Day/night cycles are welcome also.

Nightmare on Elm street, Ghost & Goblins, Ghoul School, Overlord, Wizardry. Batman, The Punisher. And i guess Deja Vu could be kind of gloomy that is all i can remember being at night or dark.

Shadowrun fits that to a T, but I didn't really care for SNES shadowrun much. Maybe the genesis one is better?

A bit of trivia, but Shadowrun SNES was made on the engine used to make Nightshade.

Fear Effect is set in a futuristic hong kong cyber punk destopia

Ninja Gaiden on NES actually had a pretty gloomy feel to it overall. There were a lot of platformers like that, with lots of dark and industrial environments. Sunsoft's stuff like Shatterhand and Batman, Project Vice, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Journey to Silius...

DKC 1&2 had this kind of dark ambience to them that I wished the Returns series had kept going.
