Just started playing BoF on the SNES and I have a question. In the shop next to the buy items option there's an option that looks like a dumbbell that goes to a screen that looks the same as the buy items one. What does is the dumbbell screen for?

Other than that, a BoF thread because there isn't one in the catalog that I could see.

I love that series OP.

I never played IV nor Dragon Quarter, is the dragon transformation system of these better than in III?

To me, III had a nice plot but everything about II except for no dragon transformation was better. The story is really mature, the atmosphere of the game felt dark and apocalyptic. Everyone is so paranoid and obsessed with this strange deity meanwhile weird shit is happening everywhere and people are getting killed by monsters, but no one seems to care, all they do is praise the deity and hope everything gets miraculously fixed. The deeper you get to this 'deity' the more friends and family members die in brutal ways.

The build-up to Deathevan is like no other i have ever experienced in rpgs, he didn't feel like just an "evil demon", to me Deathevan was Satan himself. The fight was a disappointment.

OP Here, what I was (unsuccessfully) looking up what the barbell option did I read about how in the SNES version a lot of grinding is required for basically every boss. How true is this?

I just beat the second boss without grinding, but I had to use some really strong battle items and almost all of my herbs to finally get him down. I don't mind grinding at all, but how much of it am I in for?

I am replaying 4 for 3rd time and it is shit. Ryu lvl 2, Nina lvl 6 (the only source of exp this whore got was some nigger summon fight), Ershin i-have-no-idea-what-level.

tl; i skipped every battle except necessary ones and to get Ryu lvl 2 and Rest from Goos (so i can escape battles changing into dragon form to tank shit and restore mp on battles with sleeping/confused/weak niggers);

tl; i raped the first boss (fish) like np even with Nina and Ershin being killed a lot in battles (i did it for the lulz and then escaped) so their max hp was much less than normal.

tl; game is press X to win except the battle with Fou-Lu; i've already solo'd it with Ryu till (including) 6 Ludia niggers assault on tower (it is enough to judge) and Ryu even when moderately grinded rapes everything including samurai-nigger-summon (the one who is vulnerable to combo attacks).

In 2 they ask you to get a thing 1 for a thing 2. In order to get 1, you need to get 3. In order to get 3 - 4, etc. Except when getting them the player is being introduced to entirely new subplots correlating with the the main one. Progress through subplots is interpolated and it doesn't feel like complete fucking clusterfuck unlike 3.

In 3 they ask you to go ask 1st repairman, then ask the 2nd repairman, then ask 3nd repaiman, then fucking fairies at lighthouse, then fucking machive that needs repair. Is every of these possesed by Myria or whatever-cliche-there-is but i am an actual fucking retard who doesn't understand this deepness? Or, the more likely thing, it almost doesn't correlate with the main plot nor is an interesting subplot just by itself.

Katt's drawbacks don't restrict her from doing better than ryu against terapin and eyeguards (if you want good ending) - these are the first that comes to mind

Speed attribute is crucial, suffering from lack of speed means if you don't have counter attack and firebreath_max+1 or 2xfirebreath_max hp+1, you are fucked. Ryu need retarded amount of grind early to do 2nd and less for 1st (spam helpbls (not herbs - enjoy expensive comsumables behemoth) on himself which triples amount of herbs need for katt).

Edit: For ryu retarded amount of time awaits him in either way. Way with counter attack and being able to tank 1 attack means you must run from battles to aquire super condition w/o lvl up. Or fill the whole inventory with herbs while "OK" and play a 40 min battle. The 2nd way is generally less costly on time spent in battles acquiring levels in comparison to acquiring super condition. But our behemoth now need helpbls in inventory which are costly and require wasting time on hunting.

Katt can already solo terapin at 9 while Ryu at 11. Keep in mind that the lowest possible level of Ryu required to kill the boss (11) means he is slower than terapin (but can tank 2 attacks with maximum damage output) and needs costly HelpBLs to restore his mammoth HP at once or waste like 3 turns on average to fully replenish it with the high risk of death.

BoF3 review. Slow pacing: BoF3 just felt too slow, stuff seemed to drag on and on. forgettable music: most of it is ok but a few of them were just terrible. i.e. the cave music and the battle music. dialogue was cringe-worthy from what i remember. some plot elements were retarded like the transition from child to adult which, according to my notes, happened out of nowhere with no explanation whatsoever. screen faded out and faded in and just like that several years passed. also how half the game is spent looking for a boat.

but what ultimately made me dislike the game were the terrible main characters.

rei is annoying. "doesn't that beat all". what kind of catchphrase is that? grinded my gears everytime he said it.

teepo was ok.

nina is a whinny bitch and just annoying in general. sucks how useless she is in battle too.

garr had that holier-than-thou attitude but was bearable.

ryu started as a irritating crybaby but got better as the game advanced.

peco was cool actually. i liked the way you could rack up master skills easily with him and shape him to patch any hole you might have in your party.

now momo. i don't remember hating a main character more than i hated momo. she started promising but soon let me down with her terrible accuracy. she felt like a bad ryu with a few more spells. didn't help that the game forded me to use her from time to time. didn't help that she did dumb shit all the time when she was supposed to be a genius. case in point: shooting the black ship with her bazooka and, when that obviously failed, ramming it from behind. fuck you momo.

BoF3 is literally bumps the game since the main quest is forgotten because of shitty (not just slow) pace overextended with amount of these "bumps" and the game doesn't add more value into it so the player literally can't get motivated. I am glad I am not the only one thinking this! Seriously, there's so much wasted potential in at least the original game. So many ideas, fishing, hunting, trading, dragon transformations, character fusion, underwater travel and underwater-only skills. Yet they are all so poorly implemented. You never have a reason to ever use overworld abilities except when the game outright forces you to, you never have a reason to use any water-only abilities since you have no reason to visit the underwater areas after the short segment in which the game forces you in there, and character fusions and dragon transformations are so overpowered they break the game in two and are tantamount to cheating, and are simply no fun, not to mention that there's so little variety between them. So in the end you're left with little but the basic blandest and most generic JRPG gameplay.

Such a shame. I played the game to death as a kid and loved it, especially the little parts like fishing, hunting and trying all the dragon forms you find, but as I grew up I noticed that these parts were nowhere as big as I felt them to be as a kid, but they could be, and that's sad.

I've recently been trying my darndest to play more of 2. I usually lose interest at a certain part, usually after picking up Jean. I have also heard there's a lot of argument about what version one should play also. Is it not something like the GBA version has x2 zenny and exp rate or some such but a better translation? I don't know why people say that old RPGs are grindy. They're only really grind-fests if you know exactly what to do.

I'm playing BoF 1 right now and have had to do no grinding a all because a lot of my time is spent fighting monsters as I figure out what to do, which is honestly how I think the power curve is meant to play out.
