I don't know anyone could master Haggar. His larger size makes him more vulnerable cheap hits than Cody and Guy. You really need to be good if you want to master him.

Blaze was by far the worst character in the game, moveset wise.

Max was top tier, only downside is his very slow jab.
Axel was high tier with his only downside being that 1/3rd of his moves are weak and 1/3rd of them leave him wide open.
Skate had several very high damaging moves, but he was VERY vulnerable and could be hit out of nearly all of them. He had incredible speed to make up for that though, and a very useful throw move with zero recovery.
Blaze had no high power moves except two which both had very slow windup and could be interrupted (blitz and forward super).

Grant gets points for being fast and still being useful even in the US version. Trevor is standard whippan, Sypha is a boss killer and nothing else. All Alucard had going for him was bat mode and when he's out of hearts he's virtually useless.

In Metal Slug X through 5, I just pick a character at random, though I usually start out with Tarma or Eri because they're both cool. In 6, I like playing as Ralf because I love punching the shit out of big enemies like tanks and aliens. In XX, I usually go with Ralf for the previous reason, though I've been trying Leona out since you can very quickly kill enemies and bosses by hitting the melee and grenade buttons together over and over.

Max is the best character in the game. Axel is easier to use, but Max is the absolute best for speedrunning and can destroy most bosses in seconds if you know what to do.

To be fair, even if he was the worst character in the game, I'd still use him. I always attach to the big, strong grappler guys.

First time I ever played a Metal Slug game that wasn't the first, I instinctively picked Fio as soon as I saw her. It must be the glasses, or something. When I saw the Game Grumps episode where they played Meytal Slug X, I had a sensible chuckle when one of them called Fio before they got to the character select screen and the other was acting all pissy about it.

I'm the exact same way with Terry Bogard in the Fatal Fury series. All of his special moves seem kind of basic, but he's got a super special move in Real Bout Special that will take off hale of your life in one hit.
