From wikipedia
>Before the Game Gear's launch in 1990, Sega had had success marketing its 16-bit home console, the Genesis, by advertising it as a "more mature" option for gamers. In keeping with this approach, Sega positioned the Game Gear as a "grown-up" option compared to the Game Boy. While Sega's marketing in Japan did not take this perspective, instead opting for advertisements with Japanese women featuring the handheld, Sega's worldwide advertising prominently positioned the Game Gear as the "cooler" console than the Game Boy

"Spirit" has nothing to do with it.

The Game Gear was just a shitty handheld. It was huge, heavy, and fragile, which severely limited its portability. Unlike the Gameboy, the Game Gear's backlit screen became useless if you tried to play it outdoors (a pretty serious flaw for a handheld!). It cost twice as much as a Gameboy, but had half as many good games (in the markets that mattered, at least) because every developer with a brain was releasing games for the cheaper, already established Gameboy. It wasn't even a very powerful handheld, aside from the GPU it was actually worse than the Gameboy in many regards.

Let's put a bit of a positive spin on this thread, I'd like to hear your guys' opinions on this.

Do you think the Vita will wind up doing well?
Right now I agree completely with >>1775213 when he said the library is lacking besides the ports. I say this because I was seriously considering buying a Vita this week because right now they're extremely cheap (craigslist and ebay yield used ones for 125 a pop in good condition, often with games and a memory card) and they have an incredible potential. They just need a better library of games.

Do you think it's possible for the Vita to have a really solid library of games like the Game Gear wound up having that'd convince you to consider throwing down for one?
GG didn't have a ton of classic releases like the Gameboy, but you can bet your ass it had tons of solid titles and tons of hidden gems.

They're very beautiful on paper, for sure. But it's hard to deny that you have lots of games looking way better on GG than GB. Compare Mario Land to Sonic games, for example. The Game Boy's blurriness could be blamed to the programmer's fault though.

Compare Megaman 1 and 2's annoying blurriness with Megaman 3 and onwards, for example.
Or Mario Land 2's blurry scroll and slow, blurry sprites to the following Mario Land game.

The Game Gear always had a blurry scroll and some games (Such as Sonic) used to be unplayable because the big sprites in the console's small screen used to give you nearly zero time to react to pitalls, spikes and badnicks. (The Master System versions were much better on the playability aspect.)
