Just so you know /vr/ today is the 25th anniversary of the Rance series. To celebrate, I just dropped $110 on Rance IX.

It's a good series. It has a pretty solid balance of gameplay and erotic content. And the bulk of the characters are interesting and well rounded.

Sengoku is a decent enough starting point to the series. Some of the recurring story elements/characters are all pretty well explained.

That said not ALL the games are great. Kichikuō Rance is a pile of shit.

Rance VI is the only one (save for IX) I haven't gotten around to playing yet. Is it really that good? I hear it plays a lot like Rance 5D, and I wasn't too keen on that one.

Rance VI plays nothing like 5D

It plays like a more indepth version of the dungeon battles in Sengoku.

Has a great storyline though and good character interactions and music. It's the one game in the series you actually want to know Japanese for because a machine would ruin a good story.

For the games before 5D* they can only be obtained as freeware on Alicesofts website or bought second hand.

*Kichikuou might be an exception because it still makes sales despite being freeware on Alicesofts website

It was pretty fucking feeble when it came out in 94 and I hear the remake isn't much better.

It's basically a sub-par clone of the Dragon Knight games, but with a worse plot, setting and characters.

I'm also very surprised that Pink Pineapple never made an OVA of it

In my the opinion the original art in Rance 2 isn't great. It's not as primitive as Rance 1 but nothing more than average either.

It isn't all good and there's some nasty shit in there, but the first one and ending are if you like bad ends. It is called "Raidy Anthology" or something.

In any event this all is why I don't really like these sort of games, though I understand Rance is actually pretty good (my friend says Sengoku is great). Why play a bad game in order to access H-scenes? Why not skip the bad game part?

Well lots of modern eroges have skip functions or throw you into the h-scene straight away. just look at anything Illusion has made in the last 10 years.

Most eroges of that time (late 80s - mid/late 90s) actually had pretty engrossing gameplay and stories. Lightning Warrior Raidy just sucked ass.

Rance 4.1 was disappointing. It's very short and the game felt very restricted compared to the predecessors. Atena is the only companion and combat is no longer tile based.
4.2 was a bit more interesting but I had expected more of a traditional addon to Rance 4 instead of one small quest split into two parts.
