So then, why not a 16-BIT(™) platformer thread?

Favorites, tips, comparisons, whatever...

In particular, I'd like opinions on some of the less-discussed offerings.
Earthworm Jim was awesome, and other awesomeness must be discovered.
Ristar? RKA/Sparkster? Aladdin? Dynamite Headdy?

Also, could a version of DKC3 be made with Donkey and Diddy as playables, with other Kong family members taking their place as the shanghai victims?

It's Konami, so I'll give it a try.
They look to be kinda zelda-ish in nature.
Life bar, etc.

Bumping for discussion, or whatever.

Also, do Sonic games feel too random for anyone else? I got more enjoyment from Ristar than Sonic.
Gotta go fast is annoying.

Only Goemon 3 is Zelda-like, 1, 2 and 4 are mostly side-scrollers with the occassionaly town which plays a bit like Zelda, but the core gameplay is side-scrolling.

Definitely reccommended.

Sometimes I wonder if the Japanese don't have a culture of LSD usage, or maybe mushrooms. They LOVE mushrooms.

Well, psylocibin mushrooms were 100% legal in Japan, and even sold by street vendors up until 2002, they had to change the laws and make them illegal for the FIFA World Cup 2002.

>they had to change the laws and make them illegal for the FIFA World Cup 2002.

That's a shame.
Seems like there's a lot of psychedelic-style stuff in Japanese games and Anime.

Most of the platformers this thread is about seem trippy as hell. The nature of Yoshi's Island alone is proof of that.

Really? Had no idea shrooms were legal in Japan.

They absolutely loath weed over there.
Kinda funny seeing them pro-shrooms.
Strange country.

I was surprised once when I got some japanese music magazine, there were some bands members profiles where each member listed stuff like... D.O.B, favorite food, favorite type of girl and other kind of stuff typically in japanese magazines, especially for music bands.
One of the members listed "Marihuana" as one of his favorite smokes. Seemed weird he stated it so openly on a magazine like that.

I also remember another band that sold merchandise with pot leaves in it, and the band logo itself had a pot leave in it.

As you said, weed seems to be highly prohibited in japan, so I was surprised.

They are a weird bunch. To think how badly shrooms can fuck you compared to what weed can do to you. Never understood the insane hatred for weed. That "Reefer Madness" thing is ancient history now. I thought ppl would see past the bullshit.

Judging by the platform games they've made, they're on something.

What would you estimate as the trippiest platformer?
Sonic seems quite a bit psychedelic. Never played it under the effects of LSD. Seems like a good experiment.

Trippy platformers is Japan's expertise. There's probably countless of them on NES, SNES, Megadrive, etc.

Also, the only game I ever played while tripping acid was Earthbound. That was was MADE to be played on acid.

Now I wanna do this, but I have no tabs.

Oh well.

I need something to help me play Earthworm Jim. It's a lot harder than I remember.
