About to play Fallout for the first time. Tagging Small Guns and Speech as per most people's recommendation. What should my last skill be? I was thinking Lockpicking or Computers.

Also, honestly, this'll be the first retro cRPG I actually play - or rather the first isometric one - any general tips for a newbie?

>> No.1766354

Fallout is a really fun game. I would go with lock picking over computers but i never really messed with computers that much in the game. Also you should make a habit of saving often.

Fallout 1's much more forgiving than F2 (Particularly because if you're dropped in to the temple of trials as your first cRPG you're going to probably quit temporarily in frustration), so you really can't go wrong with whatever you get. As far as the weapons are concerned, typically as you go up the weapon sizes, you wind up with more powerful weapons overall at the cost of them not showing up until later. Fists and melee start out very efficient and easy to find stuff for, small guns seems to be pretty easy to get equipment for and fares a little better than melee skills, big guns and energy weapons tend to be late game powerhouses. That's not to say you can't do well with any class of weapon (Damage has a lot to do with scoring critical hits to bypass armor and such), it's just that as a general rule the more advanced the weapon, the later you get it and the stronger it is. This bares mentioning because in Fallout 3 and NV, you're likely to find crappy versions of all classes of weapons while in Fallout, even the weakest energy weapon is a lot better than guns of other classes and won't show up until later.

As for general tips, don't bother going through a lot of ammo as you'll usually have plenty (But don't go around blasting things on full auto with an SMG either, at least not until later in the game where you can reliably replenish your supply), feel free to level your skills past 100 because the benefits are linear and have no cap, and note that even with strong armor, critical hits can go through it anyway and insta kill you, so save often.

>> No.1766892

As far as SPECIAL allocation goes, Agility and Intelligence are probably the most vital and useful: the first for having action points to spend while in combat, the second for getting skill points to spend and actually talk and relate to others. Charisma on the other hand is nigh useless, since Speech is also determined by Intelligence, the far better stat, so if you are looking for a stat to salvage for points, look for it. Barter is not that good, since after a while you get so much vendor thrash it's actually difficult to go broke. Gambling too is not so good. Remember that most of the out-of-combat utility skills, like Repair and Science, are used for "quest" checks like repairing a generator for some village and such: having a bunch of unspent points can help if you are in those situations. Remember that the game is on a clock, so try not to waste all your days in resting for getting your HP back. Crit fishing is a pretty valid strategy, maybe too much for my tastes, so if you can aim for the eyes or spend some points in Luck.

Aww yiss a Fallout thread, I just got into FO1 and I think it's a really great RPG.

A tip for everyone who's about to start, don't be a dick to the NPCs, if you have to, know your limit and save often, if you keep calling an important NPC names they'll stop talking to you or worse, turn hostile. Might as well go with the 'stupid' route if you don't want to interact with NPCs.

I was really upset about how many times in FO1 you were booted off a conversation, forcing you to start the thing over again, if what you said didn't piss off the NPC. Having dialogue hubs like many games would follow to have was a blessing.

>> No.1767279

>>1766997
lockpick is very very useful in FO 1 and 2. in fact the easiest and best build is a small guns, speech, and lockpick build.

what should he tag for a 1st run then?

also agility of 10 is mandatory, and get enough perception to have sniper at the endgame

>> No.1767294

>>1767279
There's like three locked doors in fo1 that are actually scripted to use the skill correctly.

All the plot doors are trivial to open.

No reason to get it above 30%

>> No.1767302

>>1767279
also it's very handy to have a high lockpick in the earlygame areas like junktown, the hub, etc to get some much needed cash and equipment.

if youre really worried about getting a second weapon skill like EW you can tag it later or just dump tons of points in it when you have enough money for books for other skills.

keep in mind the toughest part of the game is the first half or so. once you get past the first main quest, the game is significantly easier.

shit, you can easily beat the game with the sniper rifle or 223 and stay small guns all the way.

>> No.1767323

So I recently picked up Fallout 2 in a steam sale, and I'm trying really hard to enjoy it. The problem is that the first few areas of the game seem to be nothing but dice rolls that I'm at the mercy of.

Does the game move away from the RNG fest as it goes on, or am I just bad? If I'm fucking up, how do I get better?

My character build is 4 STR / 7 PER / 4 END / 8 INT / 7 AG / 5 CHR / 5 LK, have small frame as a trait, and I tagged small guns, doctor, and speech. Did I do it wrong?

>> No.1767567

>>1767323
You could have been more optimized but this build is not wrong and perectly viable for beating the game, although you'll probably be inconvenienced by your carrying capacity early on. But that's not a big deal, just a minor early inconvenience; you'll have NPCs to carry your stuff, not to mention the Highwayman.

So yeah, sounds like a fine, capable build; doesn't really raise any flags for me.

All traditional-style RPGs are RNG heavy. However in Fallout you can easily work to counteract it. Get your relevant combat skill (in your case, small guns) up to the 120-150 range and you will have a 95% chance to hit most of the time.

Just FYI. Enjoy yourself, learn from your mistakes, download and read the manual if you haven't got one. Not only will it teach you what you need to know, it's one of the better manuals ever written.

Have a good time. That's what games are meant to be about.

Obviously, this is accounting Better Criticals, but still, bursts never did any serious critical (and truth to be told, more damage than a single non aimed shot) that could help me, while aiming got me though both games.

That's always one thing I hated about the old Fallouts, agility always felt disproportionately important compared to the other stats. You can get by with very little of any other stat (Except for maybe intelligence for skills), but you're in for a really hard time if you want to play a low agility character. Traits like Bruiser just complicate it further.

I'm the other way on bursts. I always think the best combat strategy is to of course aim for the eyes with superior accuracy, but if you take the perk that won't let you aim, having a high critical build with a burst weapon's pretty great. Lot of bullets flying at the enemy, if they critical, it's almost certainly going to gib anything you shoot at if you roll an ignore armor critical. The only issue is that you're not rolling as many criticals until you get sniper, so at best you'll only be scoring a crit every fourth hit rather than 90% of the time like an eye shot.
