Hey guys.
I just started playing Half-Life via steam, and I noticed Freeman runs like Usain Bolt and leaps like a gazelle. Was this always the case or is the Steam version retarded? It feels like I'm playing UT or something

By modern standards Half Life is extremely fast paced. This was back when the average FPS protagonist could somersault through the air while still firing with perfect accuracy.

Anyone try the Dreamcast version mod? For some reason I shit get framerate in it.

Black Mesa "source" is a mod that requires Half Life 2 Episode 1 (or 2?) and you can find mirror links from their website. Apparently it'll be standalone and hosted on Steam someday.

You probably have Half Life Source from buying The Orange Box. If you own any older Half Life game on CD, you can redeem your CD key and get all of Valve's titles before Half Life 2 for free, including the non-Source version of Half Life.

There was that training course he took part in. The one that teaches you how to long-jump. That at least implies that he does some cardio.

In all seriousness, Freeman's background really isn't explored beyond his education - it's entirely plausible that he runs and has a gun hobby, it's just never mentioned that he does. Or that he doesn't.

I don't think HL: Source is a ruined version like some people seem to, but one thing that annoyed me quite a bit is how they changed the recoil on the MP5. In Source it's a weirdo up-and-down swinging bobbing motion, it's very odd. Other annoying things are the changed grenade physics (which make distracting the barnacles more annoying, as I recall) and most enemies ragdolling instead of gibs. But it's not like anything is on the level of "oh man you're just not experiencing the true Half Life 1, game is ruined."

I played through the entire game and don't remember anything broken. Couple things I remember missing:

>no box-pushing puzzle to get over the electrified water in Blast Pit

>Kill you if your health is low enough, then you just reload right back into the cycle of PAIN
>Not actually break the table, and then you have to fight the headcrab
>Break the table, but haha like that would actually kill a headcrab
>Break the table, but splits in half so whoops now you're standing 2 centemeters away from a headcrab.

Just little things like that that become big annoyances.

IIRC there was a run-down of how they did this on sda and there is also one for the half-life 2 donequick video. I believe they only used kb macros in hl1 for jumping and used the timescale command in hl2dq to slow down time while they did the run along with macros because when played back in demo mode it would run at full speed for the video looking like they were doing it all themselves.
That run was really impressive until I read that. Still cool though. Everything else is engine glitches, like the falling. Fall on a slant and you take no damage, to skip up a ladder fast jump while you go up and so on. All quake/goldsrc stuff.

The Source version functions kinda like how stuff works in HL2. It uses the same graphics for its models as Goldsrc HL, but it has lighting, water, and other effects working like in HL2. The contrast between the old models and modern effects can look odd. Sometimes the impact of a scene suffers. For example, in HL1 your flashlight was this pathetic dot of light that made it really hard to see in dark vents. But it illuminates vents much better in HL Source. It's easier to spot headcrabs, and the atmosphere doesn't feel as scary. HL1 also had murky water and you had trouble seeing those damn icthyosauruses. In HL Source it's easier to see through the water, meaning that it's less scary too.

When an enemy dies in HL1, it plays one of its death animations and turns into a static corpse that can be smashed into tiny gibs. HL Source enemies turn into ragdolls when they die.

HL Source has a chapter selection like HL2. HL1 doesn't. You either start from the beginning, or use console or savefiles to skip to a specific chapter.

Loading times in the Source version take longer like in HL2. And you know how hitting a map transition in HL2 ends a soundtrack piece if one was playing at the time? Well unfortunately, HL1 had a couple of music pieces starting _right_ before a map transition. So in HL Source, those moments get ruined when the map transition kills a soundtrack piece when it has barely even started.

There's also a bunch of other differences, but I'm about to hit the character limit, and the stuff listed is probably the most important things anyway.

>> No.1770136

Sounds more like laziness than engine limitations. Why not darken the water, play music after the transition, etc?
