Over this summer I beat a lot of classics that are often listed as some of the hardest games of all time like Ghosts and Goblins, Kid Icarus, Contra, Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania and I was surprised at how easy they were except for a couple parts usually near the end.

So what are some actually hard games that don't resort to bad controls and obtuse puzzles to create difficulty?

Not him, but it's reportedly much easier. Try the arcade version.

Genpei Toumaden and Umihara Kawase Shun are probably the most difficult platformers out there. If you can clear field 58 of Umihara, then you've pretty much mastered the genre.

does Kid Icarus really get mentioned among hardest games of all time? I'd replace that with Battletoads or Zelda 2 among frequently mentioned, hard but fun NES games.

anyway try Battletoads and Zelda 2 if you haven't

Yes, but I bet it's people that didn't bother playing past the first level or ragequitted after being turned into an eggplant a few times.

Super Star Wars and Super Empire Strikes Back.

Either the Kalhar Boss Monster will put his fist up your ass in the first, or the jump troopers will fuck you up on the snow speeder level in Empire.

Assuming you play on Jedi difficulty, you should have a decent challenge.

I don't usually play those games on hard because I don't feel like throwing my controller, but that's one of the few cases you'd notice the difference. It is impossible to avoid that asshole's attacks.

Did you 1cc them ? Otherwise you might just be an average pleb.

For hard games, try some CAVE shmups. dodonpachi, esp rade, for starters.

You had better hope to god you can make it up to him with a Plasma blaster, otherwise you're fucked.

Strangely enough I beat him first try on Brave, and thought nothing of it despite what I'd heard about it. Then I had to restart and when I got back to him, he tore through the 7 lives I had accumulated from the other stages. I don't know what the fuck happened.

Most bosses have huge weak points. Like the hopping robot you can get behind him and jump slash. Or the tractor beam core, you can hide in the corner and fire seekers at. That guy is really random. You can jump over his punches, but he doesn't have an attack pattern.

Him and the sandpeople level platforming parts where the mynocks can knock you off are the only parts where you can really get fucked over, though.

They took out the hardest level (which was bullshit hard) and added a shit ton of slowdown (which also makes things easier).
Depending how you feel about these things, it's either a slight improvement, or terrible.

Gradius III SNES was neutered so hard it's basically piss easy, but in spite of that I still find it a fun game. Much more fun than the arcade one.

You best not be badmouthing survival horror games up in here. I'mma hav'ta bust a cap yo.

Anyway, if you try beating those games WITHOUT savestates, you'll be in tears pretty fast. That's the thing about NES games (well, more like pre PS1 games in general, actually), they are meant to be played in one shot and if you die, you restart. And that's what makes them hard to an extent.

Also, games being "hard" or not is relative. When you compare Contra to SMB3, it IS hard as hell. If you compare it to Vanquish, it's a fucking joke. It's all relative man.

Play Metal Slug 1 with one life and no continues on the highest setting and actually beat it.

It's not a super hard game in and of itself, but when you effectively try to beat the entire thing without ever getting hit once, it gets crazy.

>> No.1760926

>>1760917
I have done that, except not on the highest setting, and I wouldn't recommend it played as such. Metal Slug games are never balanced well at the higher difficulty "settings", they just give shit tons of health.

I only really played Resident Evil and Silent Hill but they had pretty easy puzzles. I was thinking of games like the Sierra adventures or Simon's Quest.

Also, I beat all those games I listed without using savestates, who the fuck would call a game easy after savescumming?

Also, I don't use savestates.

Yes. The standard game mode is crap, but you'll unlock the "survival mode" regular gameplay of UK pretty quickly, since the traditional Tadpole boss is actually the 1st ending field now. Weird, I know.

I replayed this recently and while it was still hard it was just memorizing levels and starting over a bunch. I remember freaking the fuck out when I beat it as a kid though. I only beat it once because pete was hxc.
Also i'm assuming the snes version is the same as the genesis.
