>FPSs where levels can be completed in only 5-10 minutes

I can never understand why people call more recent stuff like Serious Sam "fast-paced" when a lot of its levels can end up taking a 1/2 hour to a full hour to complete, alongside sections that lock you in a room/arena and have you fighting a tedious horde of kleers for 10 minutes.

>enemies actually attack you as soon as you enter an area, rather than hesitate or take cover constantly
>All the genres that disappeared entirely so devs could release 40,000 FPS and TPS games a year.
>RPG elements not making a game easier

There's more, but those are the big ones. Now a side topic: What's up with enemies in games these days!?

>RE1
>enter an area
>zombies (hunters, dogs, whatever else) come at you as soon as you're near them and attack
>no hesitation, no dicking about.
>unless you have a shotgun, you're killing them one at a time

>RE4
>Ganados run up to within 5 feet of you and then suddenly start walking ultra slowly and hesitate for 5-10 seconds before attacking
>all the fucking time in the goddamned world to just execute them all before they launch their attack
>even with the most basic handgun, you can spam spin kicks to slay entire mobs almost effortlessly

>RE5
>entire mobs run up within a few inches of you and then just stop dead for 20-30 seconds and stare at you and grumble
>you could kill every one of them with the knife if you wanted to
>there's no need, because there's 10X as much ammo as you'd ever need and almost all weapons are overpowered to the max in their un-upgraded forms

Not to mention all the TPS' where enemies just stay behind cover, then moronically run at you (making 3-5 shot bursts, rather than actually trying to win) when you get close. All easily taken out.

Seriously, what the fuck? Are we THAT stupid now, that we need enemies to be retarded so we can feel like a big man while we effortlessly execute them?

I jumped on a lot of JRPG-style games, Mighty No. 9, and River City Ransom underground, and a few other games because of the love being poured into them.

Hmm.. I like little background details that aren't important to gameplay, animation flourishes that aren't necessary, and effects added to wow the player on top of already great gameplay. not sure how to explain this and have only seen it done in a few games but stages where your fighting while shit is also going on in the background like independent battles or people watching the action. one of my fave examples flips it where the bosses are watching you progress the stage and get sent out one by one in gunstar heroes. that shit is awesome also like a previous trooper stated I love it in rpgs when you can see all your equipment like swords and armor have different sprites to them. even if its just a color change it still helps

Food/toy levels. Goemon's Great Adventure, Earthworm Jim, Zool, and some others do this really well. It's even better when the food is more then just background. Bouncy jello, burning grease and the like.

Some of the newer mario games have candy/cake levels now and then, but it seems the witty, weird, or clever aspects of level design have gone the way of the dodo.

It is variable. There are ports that definitely sound better on the Genesis than they do on the PC. The Genesis has those PSG channels and whatnot for percussion samples which can be sick. But the PC-98 sounds much cleaner.

On the other hand, I've looked at how many channels are being used in Touhou music and the Genesis doesn't even have that many total. But those games are from like 1998, despite looking like 1990, so that's kind of post Genesis.

The pilot has no name, no backstory, and the game itself has no plot. The pilot is locked in an endless loop of battles, and the battles themselves don't serve any purpose. It's like the pilot continues to fight simply because it's the only thing he's ever known. The beginning of the game isn't even really a beginning; you see that explosion at the beginning of the game? When you beat the final boss, the final boss creates that same explosion, implying that even at the BEGINNING of the game the pilot has already looped around indefinitely.

Truly a deconstruction of the shmup genre.

I beg to differ. The enemies in later areas of RE4 start to get harder, because while they still walk up on you slowly, they attack immediately and don't take turns (as in, you have to watch all sides or you'll get hit while you're fighting off something else). And the Chainsaw man always runs up attacks immediately as well.
Made those segments actually fun. I personally often had to actually think on my feet and make use of various moves just to scrape by. In the last 1/4 of the game ONLY, but still.

The rest of the game is just a shooting gallery to make you feel like a big man. Period.

The only challenge they ever managed to shove into the first 3/4 of RE4 was often enemies that took a million shots to kill. But they were often still pussies at the end of the day, because you had all kinds of action super hero bullshit moves you could pull out of your ass and massacre everything in sight in seconds. Even bosses stood no chance against Super Leon most of the time.

RE5 and RE6 are still FAR worse though.
As I said in my last post, RE5's enemies are just full retard. Standing around waiting to be killed. But RE6 is even worse:

>zombies mill around, occasionally attacking
>take insane amounts of ammo to actually kill
>90% of the rest of the monsters in the game are generic TPS enemies that hide, then act stupid and die
And that's literally it

It's like Capcom suddenly forgot how to action game...

At least Revelations got it right again. The mutant zombie things would walk up and attack you as soon as you entered an area. And while they can be bullet spongey, it's never too much. Feels a lot more like a classic RE to me.

Too bad the rest of the game is effectively Dead Space level handholding.

Yeah, I fucking miss the good old days. And often times if a modern game handles things similarly to this, it's a shitty game. Like Silent Hill Downpour:

>watch 15-ish minutes of video, intermixed with gameplay segments
>get to the edge of town, go through maybe 20 minute hand holdey segment with on-screen objectives every few minutes
>reach Silent Hill proper
>game says "escape Silent Hill" then never gives you a main plot directive or hint ever again for the rest of the game
>if you get lost, too bad
>if you get overpowered and die, too bad
>if you can't solve a puzzle, too bad
>if you can't find an item, too bad
>if you break all your weapons, you have fists so fucking use them

And the game fucks with you during loading screens too, normally posting gameplay tips and such, but occasionally show you weird messages like:

>he is watching

Too bad the gameplay was fucking ass...
Still the best overall survival horror game I've played since Fatal Frame 3.

I remember a text popping up that says "you're a wuss" or something like that if you quicksave too often. I think it was added/removed on later version or something, I recently tried it on Megaton edition and it didn't do that.

I remember this being a great concept. One thing that was a draw back is that is greatly restricts the usable game area, BUT given that we now live in a 16:9 era, I think that this concept could be implemented without the gameplay constraints of the 4:3 era.
