1753856 No.1753856 [Reply] [Original]

So now that the Grim Fandango remake has been announced for PC (and Mac and Linux if that's your thing), the time is nigh for an adventure game thread.

I personally wish I could have gotten this game working on any of my computers, but it remains a constant thorn in my side to even get it to run, and it comes with gamebreaking graphical problems, so I guess I'm gonna pony up for the remaster when it drops.

>> No.1753860

I recently beat my first "adult" P&C adventure, Beneath a Steel Sky (played Humongous games in my youth). Pretty decent and interesting, but Dave Gibbons doesn't draw the most readable backdrops. Pixel hunting was so frustrating the Hardcore Gaming article explicitly shows you where the vein swelling is that you need to puncture.

Did you try Residual?

I tried so many patches I can't even remember.

It has defeated me. The process is too hard for a complete idiot like me.

I'll end up buying it for PS4. At least that way I'll have a game to play on it.

Oh there's a remake coming? Awesome, this game is still on my backlog. Might's well try the remake. Any ETA when it's going to be out yet?

>> No.1753894

With Residual it works straight off the bat, OP. No fucking around it required.

I'm not sure about a release date but the reveal video was pretty fun provided you know who Tim Schafer is.

I recommend you try the original out anyway before going in to the remake. It's nice to be able to appreciate upgrades like this. AT least that's how I like to do it.

Thanks for the info. I'll propably check the original out soon enough then.

I guess I could try it, then.

Still probably buy the remaster though; I bet if it sells well we could get some more people interested in the genre and/or more re-releases and remasters. Maybe some King's Quest remakes that aren't so "use widget A on unrelated flange B."

Was there a reason Lucasfilm Games/Lucasarts never made a Star Wars adventure game? Pic unrelated.

>> No.1754201

>>1754194
Because the video game licenses for those IPs were already sold to other video game developers. LucasArts couldn't legally make a LucasFilm-related video game.

I recently completed Full Throttle, great game but had to use a walkthrough at cetain parts.

Remember hint lines? Ain't that some retro shit.

Haven't played GF yet, but I'm working my way through the whole Lucas game line.

I will get the remastered version when it comes out, maybe I will finally finish this game. The last time I played I somehow managed to break my game by doing something too early in wrong order or something like that. Could be also that I was really young and couldn't understand what to do.

Really, I remember them developing and publishing Star Wars games from 1993 onwards.

I figured because the adventure guys didn't want to write something that could be so constricted by rules.

>> No.1754976

Part of the charm of the original is they used the kind of shitty looking nascent 3d graphics of the time and created a game that made the limitations seem fitting as an artistic choice. I remember watching an interview with Tim Schafer about the making of Grim Fandango and he said that he disliked the look of 3d graphics at the time because the limited polygon counts made the characters look as if they were made of interconnected cardboard boxes. So he set out to make a game with characters who would look decent even with very few polygons. That is the reason the game was based around boxy calaca characters (day of the dead skull figurines). Schafer was able to take technical limitation and turn it into a charming graphic style. I'm afraid that when the game gets "remastered" it will lose that charm. Although if it brings some needed attention to the neglecte adventure genre it might be a good thing. It would be nice if we had a few high profile companies trying their hand at the genre other than Telltale.

Bless you, helpful anons.

Still buying the remaster, though.

Yeah, by then the rights had reverted back to Lucasarts. I believe the original contract was written for 1983-1993 but don't quote me on that.

Residual isn't a patch, it's a completely new engine that can run the game. You'd have it running in five minutes if you took the time, but please buy the remake too and show your support.

Toonstruck was an awesome old school PC adventure game, original and weird characters with a charming world, good times. Also Neverhood and Skullmonkeys are legit adventure games too, if you havn't tried any of em find em an give em a jam.

Yea I just added it since its the sequal to neverhood and is only a platformer adventure game since it was on ps1 and followed Abe's example.

I ran Grim Fandango a few months ago on Windows 7 with zero issue using Residual VM. Zero issues. In fact, I was able to force antialiasing too and it made the game so much better looking that I couldn't believe. Completely fixed the issue of usable items poking out from the prerendered backgrounds like a sore thumb.
