Did anyone buy the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection? It had great interviews although the most interesting content was locked behind achievements.

What are you implying? The games weren't made from start to finish in Assembly, but knowing processor assembly can help in understanding parts of the ROM and what the developers had in mind.

I really liked this one. I was already a big fan of Die Hard Trilogy, and these videos not only help show why it was a bit of a janky game, but how it was a small team of dudes trying to scrape it together and make the coolest game they could with the license, sticking in features any way they knew how. Check out that primitive motion capture!

That's what I thought, too, except I thought 'that's why SOME romhacks are shit'. Some romhacker have good insight on enemy placement and balance, giving a fun, challenging but fair, game.
Romhacks ARE by definition made by and for people who are already good at the original game, though. That makes a big difference.

Well, I could do more of these, if you're interested.

I could've probably chosen a better game to do, but I was just amazed that a DOS PC game managed to lead me directly into the story.
Plus, since the other one was about enemy conveyance, I wanted to do one on gameplay conveyance.

If these get any bigger, I may have to switch to WebM
(1 of about 3 I think?)

Pic related goes into technical detail regarding the Atari VCS and the making of a couple of games for the system such as 'Combat' and 'Pitfall!'.

I'd also recommend Master of Doom by David Kushner. While it doesn't go into technical detail it does discuss some of the technical difficulties Carmack faced when creating the engines for Commander Keen and Doom. In the earlier chapters of the book you also get a sense of how being a hobbyist programmer back in the 80's was, which is neat.
