Be a star citizen in this Elite Dangerous >>>/vg/73000532 predecessor. No need to wait. It's like a 3D Starbound with Kerbal Space Program KSP style orbital mechanics.

This is the best space sim still.

I've always admired the technical tricks Braben and Bell used to get their Elite games running. Found a great history article on the original: http://www.filfre.net/2013/12/elite/

I'd talk more about Star Cruiser and Elite's Japanese precursor Star Fleet, but that's for another thread.

No problem to talk about them, I would love to hear it.

lol, Gonna need to upload a Nico Nico Douga video first. There's very limited footage of Star Fleet, 's all.

I would really like to see them, I love the past.

After YouTube mangled several attempts to download a 360p MP4, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xPc_zOvU08

Game's called Star Fleet (1982), from the company that would later make Thunder Force and Herzog Zwei. It's nowhere near as big as Elite, but has early space-sim combat (repeating guns and missiles + Newtonian physics) and text-based exploration of planets/docking with space stations. Pretty cool, though the two-year gap between this and Elite really shows.

Space...the final frontier.

Nothing like listening to In the Hall of the Mountain King while you travel.

Went too fast.

Shit, this game looks like something I could really get into. What am I in for?

First thing to buy's a docking computer so you don't have to worry about rotating in tandem with space station entry bays.

>> No.1753737

Is Elite 2 significantly better than the first game?

>> No.1753820

>>1753620
Those entry bays are something. Fucking autopilot can never be trusted. I expected it to work perfect at 1x time manipulation, since it works just fine on 10,000x. So many ships lost.

>> No.1753823

>>1753737
Significantly larger, more options for combat, ability to land and explore planets, better audiovisuals...yes, it's better. There's also Oolite if you want to play the original in a modern engine.

You forgot the best bit, to my mind - the clockwork universe. Every celestial body moves relative to every other. Binaries have tertiaries, tertiaries have planets, planets have moons, moons have stations, and all of them revolve around each other in real time.

You have to *catch* a planet to land on it, then you have to *match* it's velocity. There was a reason the manual contained the equations for rocketry. The autopilot and the stardreamer (time-compression) will do it all for you though, and even watching the heavens dance is a kind of magic.

How do we feel about Frontier:First Encounters? I always thought it was just a slightly updated version of Frontier with better missions/options/plot/graphics?
