How to modernize Doom:

Lighting is the most important. PSXDoom has godly tier lighting. That alone can make a game look really gorgeous. Here's how I'd modernize Doom:

>use PSXDoom TC as the starting basis
>revert all the changes done to the maps (revert to original enemy variety, level geometry)
>Keep additional enemies in UV and Nightmare Specter
>Keep most of the balance changes for PSX Doom (revert the ones that make monsters weaker)
>arranged music
>smoother animations
>gloved left hand
>Sounds: mix of PSX and higher quality PC versions (PSX has the same pain sound for every enemy which sounds dumb)
>Restore intermissions, end credits, and other things taken out of PSX Doom
>Duke Nukem 3D style inventory and items that activate automatically
>messages at bottom of screen
>Restore 4 episodes for Doom 1 with pistol start for each
>Break up Doom 2 into 3-4 episodes with pistol start at each
>include all levels, including console exclusives
>Aubrey Hodges.music moved to Master Levels and other levels that did not have original music
>PSX Doom intro, intro music and credits
>some item sprites from Doom 64
>liquid effects from Brutal Doom

Not sure about but maybe add:
>Duke Nukem style kick and melee button (likely won't work because of the differences between Doom and DN3D enemies)
>red eyes for monsters
>specters and nightmare specters harder to see

Definitely not:

Any other ideas? I'm looking specifically for minor tweak mods to add to this. The goal would be to port features from later Doom Ports and other 2.5D games back into Doom, so that Doom feels like a later 2.5D game rather than one of the earliest. I'm playing DN3D right now and it has some nice ideas that would work in Doom. I haven't played Hexen, Blood or any others. Do they have any ideas that might be good?

Well, let me see if I can explain color theory real quick--basically, it's the science of taking different colors and putting them together in a way that looks pleasing to the eye--this is called "color harmony".
The overall amount of colors that you put throughout a sprite is referred to as "color distribution".

I'm not sure how well you can see this here, but with Doomguy's sprite we've got three distinct levels of colors--both of them start at bright colors and slowly go down to dark, then back to bright again.

With Lord Blazkowicz, though, we start at dark, go slightly brighter, back to dark again, up to bright, then slightly less bright, before topping it off with a red.
Add on top of this that the color placement doesn't especially...harmonize well. (only one place for grey, on his gauntlets? Only one place for tan, on his boots?)
Add onto this two analogous colors (colors that are very similar to each other in tone--in this case the pants and the torso) having a direct divide against each other (desaturated green pants, bright green breastplate) when for best appearances one of the colors should dominate and the other color should be used for trim/outlining...

I think it could use a few tweaks.

I turned the greaves/helmet into a grey, lightened up the gloves a touch, darkened the shoes, and turned the collar/shoulderstraps/whatever-that-is-attached-on-his-chest into the same shade of tan as his chest.
Instead of a flow, I turned the color distribution into a pattern. You have dark grey, brown, green, grey, brown, green, grey, then red. A distinct pattern broken up on either end, as well as a more consistent use of the existing colors.

Has anybody here ever had the change to experience any of the Doom engine games in Virtual Reality?

Heretic came with support for Virtual I/O Glasses and there was a utility to give support for the Forte VFX-1 for Doom/Doom2/Final Doom.

In modern times, there is a WIP build of GZDoom with Rift support.

Honestly, despite not being a true 3D engine, Doom just seems like the perfect game for VR, with its atmosphere and simple gameplay.

I used to do pic related, close to the screens, in a dark room, to try to immerse myself in Doom. This only works in Vanilla Doom v.1.2 and in Chocolate Doom.

In addition, is there a source port besides Doomsday that has support for 3D Audio?

Allegedly, G/ZDoom has reverb and doppler effects/positional audio that can be done with FMOD, but I think that requires some ACS scripting and other stuff to be done for every map?

I would really just like a good implementation of 3D Audio/HRTF for that immersion factor.
Even if its not software audio and requires EAX or A3D supported soundcards.
Iirc, I think old versions of Doom Legacy had some special SB Live mode. Could be wrong.

Especially with Per Kristian Risvik's HQ Doom Sound pack, because that sounds pretty good.

I feel like the darker bits on lord blaskowicz aren't large enough to warrant concern really... so it ends up looking more like a straight light to dark gradient if averaged - which is completely acceptable.

the only thing I see that's a little off is that the red is isolated on one part of the charcter. Instead of having like red trimmed gloves and boots or something as well (which would be hard to read in so few pixels) it's just one dab on the top... Still not a huge issue.

You should be able to run DoomBuilder 2 just fine with this one. It's got 2 cores and the clock speed is average.

Though, because you're most likely on a laptop, you might need to make sure it doesn't overheat. It won't be under overloading stress, it will just build up heat over time, don't burn your lap, I say that from experience.

Alright, I got this idea at work a couple of days ago.

I was thinking of working DoomRL into a campaign since playing that is basically a campaign with RNG as your DM.

My question is this: Does anyone know where I could find a program or something that would generate maps like in DoomRL?

I was only planning of having it be like 10 floors (somewhat quick in length since its basically combat based and good enough for a module) and then fight either the Cyberdemon or the Spider Mastermind, with maybe a couple of floors like the Armory or the Chained Court as little optionals.

So again, I'm wondering if there's anywhere I could go that would have a tile generator or something like that.

I don't like corsets and would rather have the midriff be like the original Archvile's for easy identification. Keep the open robe, maybe with a closed robe variant, and ditch the glasses. The big problem is trying to transfer all the fun of fiddling with gadgets into gameplay.
The big draw about toku to me is the fact that the gadgets are so fiddly. There's so much stuff going on--it's the same draw as the pump of a pump action shotgun.
The problem is that this means it's not just point and click.

Like, let's use the recent Gaim for an example. You pull out a lock seed, unlock it, put it in the belt, lock it in, then chop it. That's five distinct actions, three of which you can do in a stylish/different way for your character.

Well, keep in mind this is all theoretical. The current build is very early in development, so things are guaranteed to change down the line.
Plus, like I said, this is while I'm waiting for the resources for my main projects to come in.

But basic idea is that you have only a few guns, and they only change what your alt-fire is. And they're only designed to be at range, because your speed is dramatically amped up, you have a resistance to all aoe attacks, and you can hit the run button along with a direction to do a dash/dodge in that direction for even more speed.
Primary fire is your trusty sword, and it has two modes--Glorious Nippon Discipline which is DMC-style tap-at-specific-time combos, and Wild Gaijin Flailing which is typical FPS click-to-attack melee.
Names are tentative.

Gameplay revolves primarily around two meters: The Carnage meter and the Soul meter.
The Carnage meter is simple. The more hits you land on enemies in a row, the higher your combos and thus the higher the Carnage meter raises. Sword attacks raise combos, guns simply maintain your current position. As the Carnage meter goes up with each level at certain amounts of combos, your damage and defenses improve. Charge in the fray, land a lot of hits on a lot of enemies in a row, and you'll become an unstoppable juggernaut. Play cowardly and try to take cover, and you'll die quickly.
The Soul meter is also simple. Killing enemies with the sword has a chance to drain their life essence into the blade, allowing the player to use different special attacks (like left, left, slash does a Zelda-style spin attack). Each special attack drains the Soul meter slightly, but all of them are quite powerful and have different additional effects. Like the Carnage meter, the Soul meter also has different levels, and the player is able to spend a level for either fighting-game-style super moves or instant buffs on damage/defense/speed/ghost/etc.

...though, again, this is all just theoretical.

No, that is "guitar harmonics" which is NOT pinch harmonics. It's actually regular harmonics, i.e. when you lay your finger on the 7th or 12th fret (not on the note-making parts but on the actual frets) and play. On a related note, DRPG/DRL-et al was one of the most popular/fun mods BEFORE the authors started hanging out here, mayhaps we could add little things like the assemblies/shield guides (more like shield code at this point, but if that work needs to be done, I can do it and post it) to the sticky, or make a wiki of some kind?

Only caveat to that is I rarely play DRPG or DRLA/DRLM alone, I almost exclusively play them together, so I don't know how to resolve that personally (although I'd be glad to write seperate guides for both).

I guess what I'm asking, is there interest for such a thing, or am I the only one who spergs out hard enough on optimizing my character to give a shit?

They collaborate a lot, I'm sure it'll be back in glorious order in no time.

Although I am keeping old versions of all the files just in case.

Technician is 50/50 in terms of being OP, if you don't know shit about assemblies, he wont be OP BUT he is the easiest class to find out the assemblies[unless you replay The Ultimate Doom and get the area maps], but boy, if you know how to assemble stuff, you will be happy if you encounter the female soldiers, they usually drop battle rifles a lot

Somebody who was handy with sprite editing could put a Revenant on top of a motorcycle.

I'm sure there are decent motorcycle sprites out of a mid 90s FPS somewhere. Quarantine or Carmageddon might have one? Don't recall one being in Duke 3D, but maybe. TekWar had modern urban environments, maybe it?

Or one could draw one or make sprites from a 3D model in a later game.

Add some DECORATE code to get the monster to do cool motorcycle shit (rev up engine, etc), and voila.

Not certain this will fix the issue for Doom Builder, but this seems to work for other programs and games with a similar issue.

While Doom Builder is open, fire up Windows Task Manager. Go to the Processes tab and find DoomBuilder.exe or whatever the name of the executable is called.
Right-Click it, click Set Affinity.
In the dialog box, make sure the only thing checked is CPU 0. Click OK.

Unfortunately, after you close out of Doom Builder, the setting does not stay so you have to re-do it each time you open it.

See if that helps.

The problem is that I have to write an editor for it. I tried to write a plugin for DB2 but C# drove me nuts. If I could I would nuke it.
The .001 alpha of the port is available for download sine more than a year - doomworld... search term : doom in true color.
I changed from the hsv color space to hsl which enables over brighting. When the port is done it will be for the color gourmets.

We whole arm now.

I noticed two problems.
And solved them.
First, since this is more of a resource thing, and if someone doesn't go redo all arms it will look awkward.
Second I noticed I had to keep the sprite lowered so the awesome sleeve was mostly out of sight.
So I fixed it as seen in pic.
The .pk3 contains my first cartoonish black gloves, less cartoonish dark chrome gloves, the awesomesauce sleeved one and its clone but with "ARMING" animation.

The script warning is the DRLA monster pack complaining about an unimplemented monster not properly existing. It's harmless.
The other warnings are just the game telling you there's a possible collision in terms of map objects, but given that the spawners replace the things they're colliding with it's not an issue.
