Would have never discovered bust a groove without them. Kind of a cool idea that was replaced by modern tech, but it does seem like the demos get shorter and shorter as time goes on.

These were important to me because when I first got my playstation back in '98. These were all I had to play for almost a year, until Christmas when I got Gex: Enter the Gecko and Tekken 2.

I remember though having this one particular demo disc that had a shooting game I can remember the name of, and once I got past the ship selection screen, it wouldn't do anything. The disc was clean and everything else worked just fine. So it puzzled me.

Demos being distributed with magazines/consoles was one of the best concepts introduced that gen.

Along with the full games of Rayman, Discworld, and Mortal Kombat 3, those discs in the pic were the trio of discs I had at Xmas when I got the console.
Fresh off the Mega Drive, my 9 year old self was blown away by the that bundle of entertainment, and I played each demo, and watched every trailer, dozens of times over.

Fucking ET demo. Why did they make an ET game for PS1 anyway, considering the reputation of the ET Atari game?

Also, demo discs were the fucking shit.

>> No.1750098

I remember the "secret" demos, too. Like if you hit L1 or R1 it would unlock a code to put in that would give you a game like Fighting Force.

That was how I discovered Jade Cocoon and that game pretty much dominated my young teenage years.

Is there some kind of collector or fansite for PS1 demo disks?

Net Yaroze alone is a lot of content on them, those custom menus and music too. I have a big stack of demo disks (50+) but nearly all the cases are gone, and my magazines were thrown out.

So, is there? Even ISOs or scans of the covers? Feels like a lot of stuff going to waste.

I don't say this often because I think it's over used, but oh the feels.

I got my playstation in Christmas of 96.I had mortal kombat trilogy, and this. I remember seeing the opening of the star wars game and seeing fmv for the first time and getting blown away. Movies on a video game system? What a concept. Then you had crash, previews for twisted metal 2,jet motor, tobal no 1.

Man that demo disk gave me content for a month. Looking back on it now, this was a great way to sell the system.

Yeah the price to produce something like one copy of a modern disc game even is well under $5 whereas the price of an NES cart is $25+, not even counting packaging

So on the flip side, it's pretty crazy they charged $40(now $60+) for a game when it cost a few dollars to physically make

The demo I have, stops at a certain time, and generates a code for your scoreline, stats, etc. that was used in a competition at the time.
I definitely spent more time trying to knockout the ref, and the opposing keeper, than aiming for the high score.
