Any one else on here play this?

No AC and it's too god damn hot and muggy for me to get comfy enough to play vidya for more than 10 minutes at a time

Jesus, are Saturn games always this expensive? Usually I find them for $10 or less at my local retro shop.

The good ones are. Most good saturn games can actually run anywhere from $60 to upwards of $300 (for Hyper Duel or PDS). $44 is actually not a bad deal, comparatively.

Anyone that's a US or Euro copy with some form of demand yeah. That's why people always try to hammer in on not only getting an AR cart but also a mod chip for your Saturn so you can just pirate the expensive games that require you to read what's going on and import the Japanese versions of games that don't.

Damn shame. The Saturn is one of my favorite consoles, but it tends to get pricey unless I get lucky. I do have the AR cart, but i can't speak moon. Any imports I could get without a need to speak moon?

Pretty much as long as it isn't a JRPG or adventure game like D you should be safe. Pretty much anything else could be found out through trial and error.

It seems like a lot of the PS1 era stuff had an excessive number of discs.. Some games anyways.

Parasite Eve and especially Parasite Eve 2 just feel like you have a disc transition at a very weird time. Parasite Eve 2 has a transition after the tutorial and first "level" if I recall, then everything else is played on disc 2, which is funny, because you can go back to the disc 1 area without an issue.

Then I'm playing Koudelka right now and its the same thing, 4 discs for a ~11 hour or so game casually.

And D I hear is only like 2 hours total (as in you have a time limit) and its what 3-4 discs as well? I was super interested in it then found out it was first person, which was a bit of a turn off, but after looking for it on eBay I was laughing a lot, people wanting 20 bucks for 1 disc

>> No.1747249

>>1747241
FMV cutscenes took up a huge amount of space.

And honestly no console game can match the king of uncompressed vidya: the PC. A game that could probably hit on 1 disc is on 5. See: Baldur's Gate, amongst others.

>> No.1747662

>>1746879
I haven't played D2, but I find it hard to recommend Enemy Zero. It's extremely slow, obtuse in its progression (it's not clear how to trigger necessary cutscenes, so you'll be relying on a FAQ alot), and the tense combat is undercut by long tedious treks through empty hallways to watch a one-minute cutscene of your gun reloading. It has an ok story and an overhyped soundtrack (that you'll never hear in-game)... I really wanted to like it better, especially after that glowing video-review the HVGN gave it. Better off emulating the PC version so you don't feel like you wasted $50, like I did.

>> No.1747798

>>1747662
I haven't seen the HVGN video, but honestly I thought the chaotic nature of the game progression added to the atmosphere of the game. It's disorienting yes, but that's the point. It's supposed to take you out of your comfort zone and proceed to kick your ass mercilessly. I agree that the game is slow, but to be honest both D and D2 aren't much faster, it's kind of a staple for this series.

I guess nowadays, it's probably a better option to emulate the PC version, unless you're like me and already had the Saturn version on hand and enjoy playing thru it with the Saturn's 3D pad.

>> No.1747926

>>1747241
D is two discs. It is very short and simple. Movement is a bit like Myst. I guess it's an experience but there's no real replayability. There are two endings but it all boils down one choice at the end.

You recall very very wrongly. You don't swap discs for a few hours, In fact there's a huge boss fight before the swap. It's an almost perfect place to switch

>> No.1747971

make sure to read about the beta canceled D2's story, then play D2 on dreamcast, then play enemy zero

they are all connected story-wise and that's the canonical order of events

>Hours
Uh.. maybe like 3 hours casually. You do the little tutorial bit with the swat and shooting range, the motel area (which is kinda lengthy if you're getting lost) and you're off to disc 2. Then disc 2 is the mines, the facility, an optional backtrack to the motel area, the lower part (eden?) and then leaving the facility, then going back to the facility. It just seems fairly odd, but I guess Parasite Eve also had a disc change and they are about the same length. I just remember beating the boss and going "Already?"

> overhyped soundtrack (that you'll never hear in-game)
I was so pissed off when I finally played the game that it didn't have the Michael Nyman soundtrack. It turns out he recycled most of it into other scores he did for movies.

>> No.1751274

>>1747798
If I had paid $30 for Enemy Zero, I wouldn't have been so disappointed. Eno's untimely death shot the price of the game up ~$20 almost instantaneously.

While the game has some good points, I just could not recommend it to anyone at its current asking price, for the Saturn. PC should be easy enough to pirate. Maybe people would have more fun that way. System Shock 1 being free didn't stop me from liking it.

>>1750996
It's a real bullshit advertising point, along with Luscious Jackson-whats-her-name voicing the main character. Most of the soundtrack is two notes droning over and over again, and this is really annoying during cutscenes when they are still droning during the rare parts of the game where the nyman score IS playing.

>> No.1752076

>>1751274
The price has come down a little bit now, especially if you're willing to look for a little while. The last eBay auction i saw it sold for $37 and the one before that for $35.

At this point, unless you already have the Saturn version, I would recommend people to pirate the PC version. However for those that REALLY love this game, it's still relatively cheap compared to most other Saturn games.
