Feel free to discuss city building games from series such as SimCity, Cities XL, Anno, Tropico, Pharaoh, OpenTTD, Banished, Citybound, or any others. Limit discussions to the games themselves.

Reminder: There IS probably never going to be another separate Banished general.

Unfortunately SC2k is a game that hasn't aged well.
It certainly has the nostalgia, but I won't play it again. It's best to leave the memories alone.

I'm currently playing SC2013 and I'm pretty impressed about it, even though SC4 had more options.

My biggest gripe is the map size and the bizarre routes the Sims take. It's like they don't take into consideration existing traffic at all and only add to the congestion instead of taking a different route.

Right now I'm playing Banished. The game is pretty fun but it gets uncontrollable after you hit a certain population. I wish there were technology upgrades after a while though, it got me thinking that a city building sim where you go through different eras would be the greatest thing ever, from small in a village to skyscrapers in a metropolis.

I'm having issues with fucking awful AI in Banished all the time which ruins the game for me. Instead of going off and doing their jobs they just stand around doing nothing complaining about how there are no resources available to make tools while I have resources available they won't use which leads to nobody getting any food and thus mass famines.

Only two people remained alive at the end of this famine, one male adult and one male child.

That only happens to me when I tell labourers to clear land/get wood. It's fucking annoying and it takes at least a season for them to realize what they're supposed to be doing and by then winter is over and everyone needs to get back to planting crops.

Happens to me except for things like stone and iron. Wood I have no issues with, on the other hand stone and iron they derp out completely.

Unfortunately I've never actually got to a stage where I could farm or herd. I got close with the last save (which happened at the very start of the famine) that I bought a cattle with coats but I could only afford one and the trader left while I was trying to sort out the food issue.

>> No.1744749

Why did the city builder genre die out? It's hard for me to believe EA tanked the genre alone with SimCity: Societies.

None of the modern builders really do it for me. Tropico is too sloppy. The Anno series is painfully slow. I don't want to touch anything indie with a ten foot pole.

I always start on the setting where you get a few seeds, but no animals. I've never gotten a chance to purchase them since the traders bring just about everything but that and seeds so I have no idea what they even provide. Farming is pretty fun, you can put a ton of workers to farm and after the harvest have them work on expanding. It's definitely only to be used to supplement continuous food sources though and only in large scale. Large populations eat through everything harvested pretty quickly.

>>1744749
I think it's because they're very niche and unlikely to sell unless they're attached to a known brand like Simcity (and look at what EA has been doing with Simcity). I've never played any of the Cities XL games but from what I've seen they appear to be tarnishing their own brand, too. Any "wow feature" of the game might require difficult coding too like >>1744754 said so you're left with just mediocre city builders.

>> No.1744819

I think it being niche can work for it though. Because they're so few city building games I usually buy whatever new one comes out, provided they're of good quality and not generic "gimmick simulator" quality.

They never fixed that issue? Cripes, it rendered the game unplayable past 30 minutes, even on 16GBs of ram on Win 7 64bit.

What got me about Cities XL is how they gate the bigger city features on every single plot of land. SimCity never pulled this nonsense. If you wanted to build a dense city from the outset, you could. You didn't have to bulldoze half your residents to take advantage of a new zoning area.

Weird...I'm not sure why you guys have made exodus, but welcome to /vr/ nonetheless.

The only city builder I'd like to contribute here is Artdink's A-Train series. It's got an incredibly long and venerated lineage in Japan, but only A-Train 9's up to snuff these days *and* available on Steam, translated. A-Train III got localized by Maxis back in the day, but every chance they took marketing and publishing the games ended in failure.

Here's A-Train IV; the PlayStation port was a launch title in Japan, which is kinda cool, but not as much as Maxis localizing it for Westerners. I'll also recommend y'all look at SCROLL Magazine's Artdink issue, which goes into the games in fair detail + talks about other Artdink games (like their O'Neill Island Three space colony city builder Tokio).

I don't find the fun in downloading a whole bunch of mods to make SC4 playable (vanilla game is shit), finding brown boxes, hunting down 10 dependencies, having the game crash on start due to mods, then fixing the mod causing the problem. After which you spend 10 hours plopping items leading to RSI and navigating through the packed menu system and then get a crash to desktop, finding out that you last saved an hour ago.

SC4 mods are the best and worst things about the game; good as they make a 10 year old game truly amazing, bad due to the most autistic modding community I've ever seen.

Some more A-Train. Here's some footage of A-Train 5, released in 1996: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTTNq_QBdP0

The game supported a shit-ton of early 3D graphics cards, and it was damn good lookin' back in its day (especially compared to other Japanese PC titles). A-Train 5 lets you use this 3D view to look at your city, but the planning stage itself is all top-down 2D stuff, made to be much less exciting but more practical to build railways with.

Maxis localized A-Train III for DOS, Mac and Amiga back in 1992. If it had sold better, we most assuredly would have gotten IV and V for Windows platforms or something.

A-Train didn't catch on because it was a tycoon sim and city-builder in one: your goals were profit-based, but the ultimate product would usually be large urban areas. The materials mechanic also meant resources gathered still needed to be transported around the playing field for buildings to spring up, which isn't as instantaneous as zoning in SimCity games. The concept wasn't foreign to Japanese players (who themselves loved to precisely manage train schedules as though it were programming in assembly), but it was to Western gamers.

The only games not worth playing, from what I can tell, are A-Train II (might as well play the first game, which was more of a puzzle romp), 6 (PS2-only, so less modding + not everyone wants to emulate and maybe not have mouse options), and 8/HX (the prototypes for 9, currently the best in the franchise). Also, most of the games aren't yet translated, so it's best to stick with 3/Maxis or 9. A shame, since A-Train on the PS is the best version of A-Train IV sans mouse controls!

Not any official version, no. If there are any DOS emulators available on mobile or for handhelds, use those and give the Maxis localization a shot (or SheepShaver for the Mac version, and so forth with Amiga). Otherwise, A-Train 3DS came out recently, not sure if anyone's going to translate it though...

So here's Tokio. It's much, much closer to SimCity than A-Train, but Artdink has a unique premise: you're the mayor of Tokyo's latest district, located in an O'Neill cylinder orbiting Earth. As such, you manage both this disconnected portion of Tokyo (which seems to have home rule, rather than simply being governed from mainland) and the colony backend. So it's direct city management, unlike A-Train, but there's more focus on utilities than in the original SimCity (this came out in late 1992, a year or so before SimCity 2K). Some elements from A-Train are retained, like being able to schedule transit in and out of the colony (spaceport!) and needing to manage materials for building, rather than just money. The game view's a complicated isometric perspective that lets you shift between each of the three building planes at any time.

From what little documentation's online and vaguely readable, Tokio's got some cool political dynamics, largely based around having to trade between Tokio and Tokyo for resources like food. You also have to exert a political stronghold in order to remain the elected incumbent for office...good luck with that, we're talking Japanese politics here! One feature that'll be difficult to localize for English text is being able to locate a citizen's address and phone them for a randomly-generated comment on just about anything. There's a really silly, late-'80s-bubble-economy atmosphere to the whole game that somehow channels contemporary TV, space opera anime, and previous Artdink games (worker robots are cameos from How Many Robot?) all in one go.

Dumping screens.

Tokio came out for the PC-98 and FM Towns J-PCs back in December of 1992. It also got ported to Windows 95/98 as part of Artdink's Windows port series. I'm sure it's not too difficult to get running, just that learning to play the game would be a challenge.

Here, enjoy a spaceport. The hand-drawn pixel art in this game is some of the best Artdink ever put out during their J-PC days; sorry A-Train IV, but you ain't got as much color nor detail. Shame that it takes a bit to scroll across the map because NEC machines have shitty hardware support for that...this is why there's a handy mini-map available to speed things up.

It's your job as the mayor to regulate internal weather conditions and what time of day you wish to simulate for the residents (I'm presuming the large, translucent colony panes have tinting you can toggle). This makes sense: a Tokyo without any chance to glow all nostalgic and colorful is no Tokyo at all!

There is, in fact, a sequel to the original Tokio. Tokio 2 was Artdink's final game for any Japanese PC, released for PC-98 in late 1995 (they were already releasing games on Windows the same year!). It's apparently based around Tokio gaining full independence from Tokyo, becoming an orbital nation-state and striving for global recognition. So I'd imagine some of the systems are different, though the pixel art (what's available to be seen on Google, at least) isn't as cool-looking. That game, thankfully, made its way to Windows as well, which bodes well if someone does for Artdink what XSEED's done for Falcom (A-Train 9 recently appearing on Steam doesn't count, such is how half-assed the localization has been).

Don't give up hope! At least both Tokio games made it to Windows. ROM hacking Japanese Windows games is much easier than doing the same for NEC-platform titles. Judging from Artdink's origins in assembly programming, going in to fix the original versions up would be mad frustrating for most hackers just wanting to get English text working.

Natsume's bringing A-Train 3DS over here, another small tem just put A-Train 9 on Steam. If you've been playing recent city-builders like SimCity 4/Anno/Tropico, then A9 will be in that ballpark as far as sandbox potential and complexity goes. The 3DS game is made for franchise neophytes, though that doesn't mean the game systems are compromised (moreover, the game's mostly a colorful re-skin...dat secretary). Keep in mind that the A9 version we have on Steam is 1.0, not 2.0 or 3.0, which really sucks and, yet again, shows how localizers continue to botch the job after A-Train HX on the X360 bombed. Good thing A-Train games are getting localized more than ever before, as it must mean sales potential is there.

>>1750362
A-Train 7, though buggy at launch and more of a side-step for the franchise (taking the old isometric perspective to its limits), actually introduces some neat features, like pedestrian cars on the road, that were voted out of games as recent as A9. It sure is gorgeous and has great music, but there's other good reasons it should get localized.

Keep in mind: Degica's only released 1.0 Edition, not 2.0 or 3.0, which recently released over in Japan. Definitely get it, though, if you ain't got 1.0, because it'll be a bargain at the Summer Sale price-point or lower. There might be an English text patch for 3.0 any day now...who knows, the A-Train community's very spread out, news travels slow.

>>1752934
Railroad Tycoon for you, then. A-Train isn't about competing with other transit companies (though adding them in would be the logical evolutionary step for A10). You definitely get to abuse the stock market and compete financially, just not socio-economically for control of the local area.

Artdink should absolutely consider using multiplayer modes (play-by-email or play-by-block-of-time) to test out new concepts for transit competition and influence wars. I'd imagine it's the Japanese fanbase that would oppose this, since they prefer shiny new content and variety of ways to build their railway landscapes. A more competitive aspect wouldn't have to factor in until you've reached high-level play, anyway, or if you've filled out much of the map area and are maintaining a steady profit with upkeep and increasingly risky infrastructure.

>>1752701
I'm starting to think this too: AIV Evolution for the PS1 apparently has mouse support (Maxis' localization, by extension), meaning I can easily play the game like A-Train III if I wished to. Good thing they included an awesome early A-Train 5 engine with which to view maps in 3D. I also forgot it comes with English language support, and that the 3D view loads damn quickly. Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsTBR9oo3lQ

Most of the basic buildings are built automatically by the game's AI, but it's your job to place specific kinds of buildings (offices, entertainment, &c.) wherever you feel there'll be the most economic benefit, either in bringing up real-estate values or simply maximizing profit from subsidies. So there's definitely an active role in building a city; just remember, the transit system you build takes priority, even though trains themselves take a long time to make a profit in any game. If money's an issue for you, try tinkering around in sandbox until you understand the interface and can get to a point where placing buildings is both practical and enjoyable alongside the rest of the game.

>>1755214
My quick and dirty suggestion is to check out Artdink's product page (https://www.artdink.co.jp/products/)) and see if there's anything you'd like to play. I'm guessing that, since this is a city-builder general we're posting in, you want more of Artdink's sim games. The Tokio series of games is much closer in concept to SimCity, albeit in a sci-fi setting that has limited geography to work with (making it more about urban planning than SimCity 4's terraforming). Of course, only A-Train's gotten English translations, so that's out of the ballpark for now.

Other Artdink stuff worth playing, in general: Lunatic Dawn series (Western-style CRPGs), How Many Robot games (AI-centric puzzle-sims), Carnage Heart/EXA (amazing series of robot-battling sims based around programming your bots), The Atlas/Neo Atlas (historical exploration sims), Far Side of the Moon (space strategy sim, wish this was translated).

He's talking about a mode in SC2K on the PS that lets you view the city you've made in 3D from ground-level. There was something similar implemented for A-Train IV's PS port, except it was meant to give you a head-of-the-train view of the city.

One cool thing I've discovered about A-Train 5: you can pilot a helicopter (think SimCopter from that same year) in first-person-view around your city. With the right graphics card set-up, everything will scroll smoothly and flying around looks responsive and interesting. Footage's at the end of this 15 tutorial video set included with A5 Eternal, which also gives you an overview of the game's unique multi-window interface: http://polsy.org.uk/play/nico/?vidid=sm5676981

Nah, Streets was PC only (and fun as hell). The Playstation port of Simcity 2000 had an option that would put you in a car and drive you around the streets randomly in a 3D-rendered version of your city. If you looked left you'd see your weird baby-arm resting on the car window.

Weird...I don't why I keep thinking SimCity 4 has a 3D engine when it's mostly 2D graphics. Good thing they stuck to 2D, since A-Train's 3D is pretty inconsistent from game to game (2001/The 21st Century looks much more colorful and clean than A-Train 8's mess of dullness).

They were the first tycoon city-builder sims ever made (all the way back in 1990)! Also, A-Train 9's on Steam, though you'll need to download a release patch to make it playable past a set amount of time in-game. It's also the very first edition of A9, whereas Artdink just released 3.0 last month. Alternatively, you can wait for Natsume to release A-Train 3DS, or emulate a version of Maxis' A-Train III localization to play the classic game.

This series is all about using mass transit as an economic tool to build cities. You alternate between playing the stock market and managing train timetables to maximize profit, all the while placing/building expensive real-estate and coordinating that with bus/truck routes. It's challenging to get a great city up and running, as you'll have to directly transport building materials to areas where people will build certain things, or where you've specified something should be built. But though it takes a little longer to get into the groove of things, A-Train gives you a ridiculous amount of control over your city(ies) and the public transport system.

Some versions of A-Train have them, some don't. I'd imagine it's all tied to the engine Artdink builds for a game. A9's based off of A8, which just plain looked bad (lacked draw distance and polygonal detail, among other things). A-Train 3DS has peds, if not traffic (traffic, remember, always changes the dynamic of how you operate bus and truck routes for money). I agree that citizens add charm to the world, and I'd like to see them more visibly animated in A-Train 10. I don't see any families up doing aerobics in these games...yet.

Also, I bought some Artdink games from Ray Barnholt of SCROLLS. They just arrived yesterday evening, will have pics.

Wish I had a better picture of this thing. The inner city's districts are all going to be divided by those green belts, but I've only finished the core block and about half of the west block.
Mainly what I've been experimenting with is demolishing my older highway intersections and replacing them with the NAM ones. Also, I'm really racking my brain on how to get one of these high speed lines going throughout the main city.
But yes, the NAM fixes AI without replacing roads, I already have about 25% of my commuters as pedestrians, and about 10% on my subway lines.
But, yeah. Work in progress.

Posted my region earlier in the thread, but oh well, I'm trying to get some ideas here.
I've been trying to put some time into my little theater district. I've had a hard time attracting customers to the area, which forces the buildings to abandon quite easily. It's probably because I wedged it into an area between the park and the hospital, but even with the connection to the main East-West road on one side, and the residential districts on two sides, still really unattractive part of town. I like how it looks right now, just seeing if anyone else had an idea on how it could be set up better.
Also, still haven't upgraded my roads to the RHW ones just yet, but I've been planning to do that just one area of town at a time so I'm not overwhelmed. Might be a good idea to rip up the freeway and replace it soon.

It's kind of baffling me that this area is so Low R$ right now, since it's sandwiched between the CBD and the main hospital. I really like the location, right now. But I might have to move it entirely from this side of the city. My desirability rating for high wealth residential and commerce is solid in the area too. But i'll certainly take your advice on the road network. I was thinking about making the avenue on the right redirect into the district, kind of force the traffic pattern to enter the area. Since these roads are too long they are a waste of space where I could of put resident zones down instead. It doesn't help that about 1/3 of the map is water though, thus making it harder to plan out my city.

I am going to take a few more photos and post em here for feed back.

Unless it was changed (and a cursory browsing of the Simcity forums indicate it hasn't) the reason they congest so badly is because of how the job/house/store seeking works: every sim attempts to go to the nearest available location, regardless of what other sims are doing. That means you can wind up with a big ol' conga line of workers heading for a single small store and when it fills up they all redirect to the next closest one.

This is also why you can have buildings that run out of wealth even in a city with job surpluses; at the end of the day, the workers all head home to the nearest houses first. Or as some other observant anon put it, the game treats sims exactly the same way it treats sewage.

I can't find a way of halting this decline and my city has basically turned into Detroit with abandoned housing and industry etc.

At first I'd like to apologize to you for asking such a stupid question.

I bought SimCity 4 several years ago, and I tried and tried, but I've never done well because of poor money.
I wonder if I make too much areas? too much roads? too fast to make something?
There are many SC4 sites on the net, but all sites explains about high level techniques.

Please remember your first playing SC4, and I'm glad to tell me what I should do for my first smallest city.

Can somebody please recommend me another single player game? I was hardcore gamer for years, but I can't stand seeing my time dissappear the way it is, I hate obligations to stay online and away from my real life, wasted too much time on vidya over the years, and as I'm getting older the rapid reflexes required of FPS start to give me motion sickness now.

Can anybody recommend me one other peaceful singleplayer game? I just want to satisfy my OCD by filling in this gap here.
Please nothing that has an emphasis on combat, I am looking for something like banished or maybe another city builder.

I tried SC2k Network Edition recently. Was a pain to work through the VM, but there's another problem: All speeds but the last one are throttled using a timer. The last one runs as fast as it can. As a result, on modern hardware you got 3 slow settings and one that instantly burns through a century. That's why I prefer the DOS version. That's also the only reason why I prefer the DOS version. Another lost classic from Japan: The Mars Project, developed and released by Kogado Soft in 1998. Remember when SimMars got cancelled in favor of The Sims? Looks like the Japanese delivered instead.

The game's all about colonizing Mars, which takes the form of a large rectangular region based on map data collected by NASA. You gotta build domed settlements, manufacturing facilities, terraforming ops, &c. to win a specific scenario and avoid disasters like asteroid impacts and solar flares. Most of the city-building is more micromanagement than macro, but you get to build multiple colonies across the Martian region and connect them through trade and utilities. Its two sequels have character-based story modes, since Kogado was breaking into the VN market at that time. Mars Colony: Challenger's the most recent game with this setting, but I bet Kogado was working on this series back in their PC-98 days (pixel art's crisp as hell).

Not many shots of the original, so make do with this: http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/kaseki_gamer/39946306.html

The city graphics are unique, but they're using stock photos of Mars and some generic CG renders for other things. Game must have been low-budget and low-manpower when it came out, though the sequels have a lot more effort put into them.

The early Windows era was a goldmine for Japanese simulation and strategy games, and they wouldn't have to compete with VNs for a while after.

Lots of planning and many regions. I've been playing sc4 for a looong time. All these cities are completely game functional without cheats too.

I like my shit to look a bit realistic but still Maxis-cartoony. I like to keep things very dense as well with lots of trees. Pegs random woods are my most used lot by far and are perfect filler.

This newest city has a traffic system that relies completely on limited access high capacity roads and rails for all connections. Never had such great traffic flows.

Get the NAM and Oldshoe's mod pack and you'll have everything you really need. I actually made most of this region without even using the NAM.

Speaking as a computer science major:
Do NOT get into programming with the intent to make a game. You'll overreach, be disappointed, get frustrated, and give up.
If you want to program games, that's fine, but your core reason for learning programming HAS to be interest in programming in and of itself. Otherwise you'll lose interest because you're not seeing the results you want at the speed you want them.

As for how long it'd take to teach yourself and program a moderately complex game, I'd say anywhere from a the better part of a year to a few years, depending on how fast you learn and the detail you put into the game.
