I feel compelled to point out a few things (because I'm autistic), first, the left side of the gun should be largely smooth, the right side has the ejection port.

Second, there doesn't seem to be a windage adjustment screw on the sight/carry handle, and the rear sight looks more like an M16A2 or modern rear sight than an old M16A1 rear sight.

Third, logically, there shouldn't be ever be a star shaped muzzle-flash where fire spikes straight up, flash-hiders and stuff were specifically made to prevent flash from kicking up into your sight picture.

(To keep the dynamic look of the flash, have randomizations for it, have them always be in the same angle, but slightly varying in size and shape and length of the "arms" of the flash.)

Fourth, there's no charging handle on the side, the T shaped tab below the rear sight is the charging handle. It does not reciprocate when the gun is fired.

(Although, properly, the bolt should lock in an open position when the last round is fired, requiring you to only switch the magazine, and then hit the bolt-release, meaning you don't have to manually rack the charging-handle in most circumstances)

Fifth, the gun recoils too harshly, the M16/AR-15 is a gas-operated .223 caliber rifle with a buffering bolt, it has considerably light recoil.

It should also probably cycle a bit faster.

It looks pretty good to start, but it's not quite authentic looking.

Okay so he's working on a CTF map, where one side's a tech base and the other's a Hell base, and we're using the stock textures and Skulltag despite my sperging. We were trying to come up with some basic "things" that would make a map look hellish, I.E. marble, flesh, rocks, torches, psychedelia, the like.

The most I can figure is that you go through maps with stock textures and start taking screenshots of areas and locales that look really cool.
I'm a shitty mapper, so what I do is go by reference--I find structures that scream "this is hell" or "this is tech" and then see if I can replicate their style.

first try demo for O6's E1M3.wad (second(?) version; md5sum 6526db9d2381640b2d04424344a01438)

there's a lot of slow play, searching, backtracking, etc. as one might expect from a first try, especially since i read that it was low ammo (not so much, as it turned out).

doesn't finish. i jump in the slime at the end, find the teleporter behind the berserk box is broken, and there's no other way out. also the slime doesn't damage me when the radsuit runs out.

at that point i had 5 monsters left alive and 5/6 secrets - i assume the teleporter would take me to the sixth - so this was pretty annoying.

the door that doesn't open by the blue key bars is strange.

also included sfall.wad, which adds the missing texture from doom2.wad.

MM1 was very cooptimized aswell, with some levels even designed specifically for coop (still SP compatible though). MM2 was more SP focused with the level design, but still had coop support.

in fact the sixth secret is the second door at the back of the computer map secret, but it is a thin sector followed immediately by a step up, so it can't be triggered without no-clipping mode.

i find this map's flow mystifying - you seem to need the red key to exit the map, yet must find secrets to obtain it, as the main door to the red key room (next to the blue key room, up the self-building staircase) doesn't open.

It's not that the netcode is better, it's that the architecture that uses the netcode is better. Z& is click server, press play. ZDoom requires you to connect at the start via command line, and stay connected throughout or the game ends. No swapping out players, no adding players, no nothing like that. From what I've heard it's basically nothing but BRs and cheating is rampant.

For me, i wish there was a soldier replacement for everything, like Allen[from the Metal Slug series] to replace Spidermastermind sometimes and he has a high powered Machinegun [think in assault rifle but with the same ammo and power of the chaingun] and he has the tactical armor,which it means you wont do any damage unless its hitscan attacks or direct projectiles to the face (he has the same health as the Baron of hell though). And to put him worthy in replacing a big monster,he will dodge like a crazy and throws greanades or flashlights and if he's close enough,he will kick you and it will do the same damage as the arch-vile attack

Ripper is like 3x stronger than a regular chainsaw and drains health. Still a wasted weapon slot.

A good solution would be a berserk-on-demand system with massive innate resistances similar to doom roguelike (+60% to all resistances) that locks you into melee weapons only for a long time.
There is no way the future melee-oriented class is going to survive miniguns/tristar blasters EVERYWHERE in the hardest difficulties without massive free resists.
Either large resistances and doomy weapons or GMOTA style with insanely good melee + shield + lots of utility.

Another problem is that regular kicking, even without special boots/combos, is already pretty darn effective as a backup weapon.
Scouts and Marines have zero ammo problems, while the Renegade is insane in close quarters by default and Technician wishes he could carry 20 weapons already. No classes want a backup melee unless the wad has very scarce ammo on purpose.

A good way to get around this is to create new tanky enemies with high resists against everything except melee.
A nightmare demon that takes the same damage from a point blank SSG blast and an unboosted kick will make you consider carrying a double chainsaw around. I vote for projectile-shielded agitating skeletons or arch-viles that do not attack, but can survive several BFG shots.

this is fine provided the damage run is fairly short and/or doesn't need to be traversed repeatedly. for example:

- e1m4: you are "forced" to dash through slime if you want 100% secrets, but it's a very short run, less than a second.

- e1m5: you are "forced" to dash through slime in several places - at the beginning of the map; again to reach a secret by the yellow key; and in the west section of the map to press a switch; and across to the door the switch opened. there is only one radsuit and it is in a secret.

as i say, i think it depends how long it goes on for. e2m6 has the slime run at the start. e3m4 has the radiation run towards the end, although there's a secret radsuit for that one. e3m6 has plenty of radsuits but you're probably going to have to take a dip in the lava at least once. e3m7, well, that one might have a bit too much enchanted-blood-running...

Actually, I think inescapable pits are poor game design. It's annoying to have to wait to die. At least Hexen kills you instantly when you fall in a deep pit. And Doom 2 usually has some kind of hidden door or elevator, so the pits are never REALLY inescapable.

the worst thing i've played recently in this regard was Switcheroom E4M5. 20% damage sectors everywhere, in all of which you are required to spend a prolonged amount of time. few radsuits, and you still take damage anyway because radsuits are leaky in 20% damage. very little health and ammo, plus monsters everywhere from which there is little cover or dodging room.

They're just recorded at 60fps with fraps and converted with webmconverter. They're smooth because 24/25 fps has been the film standard for fucking ages. The way I did this last one was using Open Broadcaster to record the movie at 60 fps and then WebM for Retards to clip the recording down to under 3 MB. I also found WebMCam that supposedly works like GifCam but I haven't fiddled with it yet.

Here's the thing: To me, any great set of levels is going to gel well with the levels around it. If you're only making a single level, fuck it, make it as big as you want. If the map is intended to go with other maps that you aren't making, fuck it, make it as big as you want and let the compiler decide. If you're the only mapper and doing multiple maps, then this is how the progression should go (IMO)

Small first map > Medium second map > Big third map > Big fourth map > Small, fun, gimmicky map > Medium map > Big map > Boss map

Generally assuming a rule of about 8 levels per "episode." You can move this around to your liking (Doom 2 for example has a "boss map" in Dead Simple on Map07) but that's a great way to do it. There should be "break" maps that aren't too difficult or maze-like; if they're big they need to be mostly open and not complicated. Remember, just because you've used all 3 keys in a previous level DOESN'T mean you have to use all 3 keys in EVERY future level. Contrast! Big map, little map, hard map, easy map. If the player spends a long-ass time on one map, the next map should be a breath of fresh air and be a little bit easier, either in fighting or in navigation.

I like to make my big maps have lots of little encounters so they don't feel like slaughtermaps, but there'll usually be encounters in every single room alongside little puzzles or switch/key hunts. Then if I do that, the next map should be just a straight up series of encounters. There's nothing wrong with a completely linear "break" map inbetween two sprawling non-linear maps. This way the player doesn't easily get fatigued and feel like every level is the same. If each level has a different "mood" then it works out great.

Well what I've got kicking right now is that all the maps are gimmicky. Level one is nearly a 1024x1024 map (just slightly larger). Level 2 is all about playing around with lighting and running through the dark. Level 3 splits into 2 paths and has 2 exits, level 4 is Claustrophobia - all about tight spaces and getting stuck (I know people will hate this map, but this whole wad is for experimenting really), and the other level 4 is Agoraphobos -all about having a dense level and trying to get the feeling that there is too much to explore.

It runs decently in the Dosbox. The main problem is the game itself, it is almost unplayable mainly because of the broken physics engine (fuck jumping over pikes / spears and lava, collect endless amounts of fire resist potions).
There are also billions of bugs and glitches.

The controls are fine, you will get used go it.

If I had the patience and the will, I'd make a source port, since it is based on the build engine. But I am currently busy with my hardware projects.
I love Witchaven, it is unique and as awesome as Hexen / Heretic.

You could probably make a custom HUD for it as well, one that includes icons for the items. You could use PSX Doom's simplified HUD. If you move things over slightly you could get enough space for three items.

PROTIP - After you flip a switch, it tells you that a door activated in a specific area. Sometimes the name is off, or its a nickname for another place, or a specific name for a part of a certain world, so you have think carefully about what it's telling you. Whenever it tells you "1 6th of part of the puzzle has been solved", that usually means it hasn't opened anything and it wont until you find the other 6 pieces.

As for the puzzles, they may be difficult, but they make you feel clever when you figure them out. (For instance, the shadows from the ceiling pointing the direction you need to go sometimes).

It definitely takes patience to figure them out sometimes.

What does this even mean? Like the boots or night vision in Douk? I completely disagree with this; the items are already way more useful than they would have been in vanilla.

It MIGHT be. I've never looked into it but it might be possible with some ACS; unfortunately I'm one of those assholes who thinks you should never use ACS to accomplish shit that doesn't have to do with changing level architecture or events in a map. I don't like "universal" ACS that affects the game no matter what map you're in.

I don't want to do a custom HUD because it would be overwritten by other mods that have custom HUDs. Also, I don't like the PSXDoom HUD.
